Super Bowl XLVI?? I care not. PUPPY BOWL VIII?? Heck. Yesssss!!

For those living under a massive pile of rocks, here’s the Q+DD on the Puppy Bowl:
The Puppy Bowl is an annual television program on Animal Planet that mimics the Super Bowl, using puppies. Shown the same afternoon of the Super Bowl, the show consists of footage of a batch of puppies at play inside a model stadium, with commentary on their actions. The first Puppy Bowl was shown on February 6, 2005. The puppies featured in the Puppy Bowl are from shelters, and the show contains information on how viewers can adopt rescued puppies and help their local shelter.
It’s the very best thing on TV all year, folks. FACT.

Yep, canned sparkling wine. And, is it cute or WHAT?

I went to an industry event at the Biltmore Ballrooms on Tuesday and one of the vendors had these at their table. I was probably slightly too excited about the cute pink cans + I definitely took more than one…
Here’s the Q+DD (from the interwebs) on Sofia Blanc de Blancs Canned Sparkling Wine:
Niebaum-Coppola Winery, owned by film director Francis Ford Coppola, wanted to sell its Sofia blanc de blancs sparkling wine — named for daughter and fellow director Sofia — in a 187 ml serving, just big enough for one drinker’s thirst and a neat way to enjoy sparkling wine without opening a full-size bottle. For years, champagne and other sparkling wines have been served up in 187 ml bottles (about six ounces, or a quarter of a full bottle) known among wine types as splits. Coppola wanted to sell a split of Sofia, but couldn’t find anyone to package it in small bottles with corks of the same quality as their full-sized offering, which has been bottled since at least 1999.
Other ideas weren’t terribly appealing — a bottle with a screwcap looked too much like those airline single-servings; not bad, but not the hip image the winery wanted for Sofia Then they contemplated the can. “The more we kind of played with the idea, the more we warmed up to it,” said Erle Martin, president of Niebaum-Coppola. “We realized we could make a can very cool and very elegant.”

Part of the plan has been to market Sofia not merely as premium wine without a bottle but as a clubgoers’ drink: ordered by name, easy to hold at a bar and ideal for resort poolsides where glass is a no-no. Niebaum-Coppola’s intention is to target drinkers of beer or alcopops, those fruity mixes like Smirnoff Ice that have supplanted wine coolers as the choice for sweet-palated drinkers. The cans are meant to appeal to what Martin has described as a “Sex in the City” crowd: sophisticated female city-dwellers, from just over drinking age up to their mid-30s. It’s a different audience than most wine drinkers. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/)
After doing some light online research, I realized that Sofia blanc de blancs has been around for a while in the mini cans, SO I might be a little slow to the game. Whatever the case, I’m still excited about it! These little cans of sparking happiness are seriously super cute + have fully caught my attention. (Move over PBR…)
JUST love!

If you know, you know.
If you DON’T know, you might get in a car wreck (like I almost did on Sunday night heading home from Kev’s work holiday party)…

The beautiful Buckhead house on the corner of Peachtree Dunwoody + Winall Down has decked out their front lawn with Christmas inflatables. I’m talking maybe 100 or so if I had to guess. There isn’t ANY walking room! It’s hardcore.

The little Jewish girl in me who wasn’t allowed to have Christmas lights or inflatables in my yard growing up wanted to jump out of my moving vehicle and hug each + every one of these colorful, holiday blow ups! (My brain pretty much exploded…)

Instead of completely actin’ a fool in my holiday party-appropriate dress + heels, we U-turned and snapped as many photos as we could. And, we weren’t the only ones.
We found this, too!

"dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, i made it out of clay..."
Y’all need to see this display at night. It’s instant holiday cheer. The kid in you will LOVE it!

Kevin (so hard not to call him “Slick” any longer…) + I hit up Midtown’s Street Food Thursday in our ‘hood yesterday afternoon.

It always reminds me a little of my beloved Austin to see the trucks crammed together in Midtown like one big food truck trailer park of deliciousness.
One truck, in particular, caught my eye yesterday: WOW! Food Truck.

We got in line + in a flash of pre-ordering online due diligence, I found out that the WOW! Food Truck is Atlanta’s first truck specializing in Venezuelan arepas. (Then, I had to look up “arepas.” Don’t judge…) They are savory grilled corn cakes stuffed with slow roasted meats. WOW! is also known for their delicious donuts which Creative Loafing listed on their Top 100 Bucket List . Okay, yes yes yes! I was ready to eat.
Here’s a glimpse at their menu:

And here’s the full Q+DD on the WOW! Food Truck:
Once upon a time, several years ago, Wendy Cross was visiting her brother (yep - that brother!) in NYC. She asked him where she could go to get a quick bite that was really good but wouldn’t break the bank. He quickly replied that there was an arepa bar around the corner and she should check it out. After realizing that the word “arepa” wasn’t some sort of sophomoric attempt of him being funny, she found herself at the little restaurant eating her first arepa. “WOW! These are amazing” were the first words exclaimed after her first bite. Wendy wondered…why isn’t anyone making these in Atlanta?!! She knew at that moment it would be her mission to bring these wonderful savory stuffed corn cakes to her peeps in the ATL. Now, all she needed to do was find a restaurant to partner with so she could bring her arepa food truck dreams to fruition.
After interviewing several restaurateurs, she knew that the girls at Duck’s Cosmic Kitchen in Decatur would be the perfect match. Their dedication to using only the freshest ingredients, making everything from scratch, and not owning a microwave won her over. Wendy started to sell her arepas as a special at the restaurant while the truck was getting ready for its big debut, and after selling out the first day, they knew they were onto something good, and the rest as they say, is history!
I happen to love that story. And also, the truck has a pretty serious paint job that I found super impressive…

Frankly, all of the menu looked interesting to me, but I was on a mission to try an arepa + a shrimp cake.
From left to right:
Chicken Sofrito Arepa: savory Venezuelan griddled corn cakes stuffed with slow roasted meats + topped with their famous creamy cilantro jalapeno “kicky” sauce.
Crispy Shrimp Cakes: panko-crusted, perfectly seasoned shrimp cakes served with “kicky” sauce alongside organic stone ground cheese grits.

Kevin and I couldn’t believe how delicious they both were! And, really filling, too, for very little $$$. We are going back next week for more. Why can’t it be Midtown Street Food Monday – Friday??
If WOW! is that good, I can’t wait to see what Duck’s is all about…

I missed it last week, unforch, but my DVR is set for tonight! Zooey Deschanel is my girl crush, after all… AND, she’s wearing an Anthro dress in the promo picture below that I heart. (Didn’t fit right in the store, but still super cute.)

zooey d is the new girl
New Girl is on FOX on Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. EST. Apparently, the premiere last week was really well received. I just love her. I hope it’s like (500) Days of Summer every Tuesday night!

There’s that dress again…

I just really feel like we should be friends. I mean, I used to have bangs. I used to listen to Death Cab + she’s married to the lead singer. She & Him is super great and they’re on my regular iPod playlist rotation. She was in Elf and it’s one of my top 5 favorite movies… We both rock out in Anthro. I think she’d like me.

That’s all. Until we’re BFFs, I guess I’m fine catching her on the small screen. Watch New Girl tonight!

Being LK or my significant other is not an easy task. Not only do our men need to be game for packed social schedules – evenings filled with dinners, drinks, events + schmoozing; but also they absolutely have to be social media-friendly.
Just ask Greg! We’re a lot to keep up with…

Slick and I started dating shortly before LK and I created the Q+DD. He loved the idea and fully supported us…

- “hey! what a great idea!”
…until I made it clear to him that we would be using our names and posting an excessive amount of personal photos on it.

"wait - what??"
Slick was in a pickle. He wanted to be part of the Q+DD, but he didn’t want his every move tracked and posted on the Internets. Naturally, LK and I (excessive Facebook, Twitter + Foursquare users) had difficulty comprehending Slick’s privacy concerns, but we had to respect his wishes.
After much deliberation, we reached a compromise. We would use pictures of him, but under the pseudonym: Slick. He was down with it.
For the past two years + some change, Slick has been a regular on the blog.
Enjoying fancy meals…

Entertaining the locals…

chateau elan
Kissing babies…

Riding dinos…

fernbank museum of natural history
All the time under the clever disguise of “Slick”…

…so that he could support us while also feeling like he maintained some privacy + could keep it professional at work, etc.
UNTIL NOW.
Slick is tired of his alias. He’s grown weary of people referring to him as “Slick” in public settings. He’s now fully embraced his social media presence (+ trusts that we are not going to use our blog-writing-powers to humiliate him) and he is ready to let everyone know who he REALLY is!

"i'm ready, world!"
Slick, dear readers, is in fact KEVIN (Kev for short)!

KEVIN. KEVIN. KEVIN. Finally!!
So, there you go. Thanks for being such a great sport, Kev!

We heart you, babe.

This weekend is Dragon*Con!
Oh yes, the magical weekend where you could be sipping your coffee at Starbucks next to a Suntrust Banker in a three piece suit and a storm trooper.

"Uh, yes, we'll have 43 half-caf americanos, please."
(When I worked in Peachtree Center downtown, I used to awake like a child on Christmas morning the Friday of Dragon*Con. Where else can you work on the 15th floor of a high rise office building and come down for lunch and see a pack of grown men dressed as the cast of Monty Python’s Holy Grail? I’m pretty sure nowhere, that’s where.)
If you have NO idea what I’m talking about, here’s the Q+DD on D*C (and you’re welcome.): Dragon*Con is the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe!
It’s also the reason for the WORLD’S COOLEST PARADE.

Be there or be…normal and boring? September 3rd at 10:00AM Downtown. (About a ½ mile long – north on Peachtree Street from Woodruff Park at Auburn Avenue to the Hyatt Regency at Baker Street. It continues onto Baker and ends on Courtland Street at the Marriott Marquis’ back entrance)
BONUS: It’s the 10th Anniversary!
Please note that Dragon*Con has changed their policy and will be blasting free-loaders with their light sabers. No, not really. But you’re not allowed to partake in any of the festivities (except the parade!!!!) unless you’re a paid participant. So grab your Goblin’s Gold and get a badge, yo.
I always say I’m going to wrestle up a costume and head down, but never do it. But you will more than likely find my gorgeous friend Erin down there in full regalia, turning heads like a Ginger Goddess. Witness:

Erin, right, as Cover Girl from GI Joe (with a Superhero named Hawkgirl. Yep, Hawkgirl!)

Erin (center, obviously) as "Black Canary - "Holy Costume Party Batman!" as she calls it
Next year just may be my year…you know that Linds and I LOVE a good costume…

As they say…

Friday, Friday. Gotta get down on Friday.
And get down we did.
First stop: We picked up Ellen and Matt…otherwise known as BarChila…who came well-prepared for the evening:
Next up: Amazing pizza at Pizzeria Vesuvius.
We started with breadsticks (Joy: they are cheesy!) and the Greek salad (the dressing was super interesting…I liked it.) and then we went for the following:
Vesuvius
Our spicy buffalo pizza with smoked chicken breast, mozzarella, blue cheese, jalapenos, celery and buffalo sauce.

The Mighty Vesuvius
Kilauea
Grilled chicken, red onions, roasted red peppers and barbecue sauce.
Alpine
Ricotta, mozzarella and goat cheeses, sprinkled with fresh oregano and olive oil.
The Vesuvius was my favorite (I’m a sucker for buffalo sauce and blue cheese, what can I say?), followed closely by the Alpine. The Kilauea was a little too BBQ Sauce-y for Terch and me, but the boys did not agree. Gotta love a guy who loves a condiment.
After dinner, we went downstairs to the “Music Room” for a little ping pong action
Ellen demonstrated the proper ping pong stance
and I attempted my first Plank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We were also privileged to hear the musical stylings of “Mumford’s”– a very interesting, very spirited band with a lot of brass and apparently a cult-like following! By the end of their show, 75% of the players were shirtless and the boys had purchased their last 2 t-shirts for Ellen and me.

Mumford's newest fans!
All-in-all – huge fan of Pizzeria Vesuvius. Bonus: there’s a ScoutMob right now!

Were we done? Oh no we were not. Our ping pong itch had not been scratched, so we headed a block over to Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium.
In the interest of full disclosure, this place is VERY religiously irreverent and I can appreciate how some could be easily offended by the tongue-in-cheek, sacrilegious artwork and elements such as a confessional booth turned-photo booth, but I have to tell you – I LOVED the general flavor of this place and some of the artwork really made me laugh.

Just like mama always said
Plus, we made some really great friends waiting for the ping pong table upstairs. Next to a Q+DD Koozie, this is about the coolest thing I have ever seen:
What a totally random and fabulous night in Edgewood!
I love you, Atlanta.
