Is it just me or is every week a Restaurant Week??

Not that I’m complaining…but still.  It seems like every time I turn around it’s another RW.  (P.S. It’s impossible for me to write “turn around” w/o breaking into song in my head.  “TURN AROUND…every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you’re never comin’ round…TURN AROUND Bright Eyes!” )  Excellent.  Will have that in my head for the rest of the afternoon.  Similarly, I can’t say the word “situation” any longer without thinking of my favorite Thursday night guilty pleasure.  GTL 4 Life, yo.

Okay, okay – back to business…

My personal favorites included in this list are Ecco (don’t forget to get a bottle of my favorite wine!), Pacci and Serpas, but overall this is a nice selection of restaurants for an excellent deal.  Don’t miss out, but honestly if you do, I’m sure that it will be Midtown RW again in a month or two.  Just sayin’…  :)

…is the heirloom tomato salad at Hot & Hot Fish Club in my hometown of Birmingham, AL.  True story.

Heirloom tomatoes. Fresh peas. Fried okra. Corn. Applewood smoked bacon. Balsamic vinegarette. Chive aioli. (+ crack cocaine?)

Of all the great restaurants in all the cities in which I’ve livedNYC, Austin, Atlanta and BirminghamThe Hot & Hot is still the reigning king of my little wanna-be-foodie heart.

It’s always my first choice when I’m home to visit.  I love everything about it. I love the open counter with a direct view of the chefs in the kitchen wearing long-brim fly-fishing hats,

the historic building it’s in (once was the home of “the Upside Down Plaza” – apparently a seedy, yet supa-popular nightclub from “back in the day”), the AMAZING amount of hometown gossip you can glean from loitering in the ladies’ room long enough, and, of course, the SPECTACULAR food that I’ve enjoyed there for years.

BONUS: Last night we got to have a little chat with chef and owner Chris Hastings!  He’s such a cool guy – we chatted restaurants and food and he filled me in on his favorite Atlanta spots and asked me about mine.  We had a brief convo about restaurants with beautiful food and snotty service, during which Chris made a comment that “Food church is dead.” I couldn’t agree more…  these days it really is all about good food and an earnest attitude – which is exactly how I’d describe his restaurant.

Food church may be dead, but chef as a celebrity certainly is not.  I heart you, Chris Hastings!

Soooooo, Lindsay has a new favorite restaurant. 

It’s called The Iberian Pig, and you can find it hidden in downtown Decatur.

Although it took Slick + me an extra 30 minutes more than everyone else to find it for Eat Squad last week, it was absolutely worth the hunt.  (Seriously, though, it takes a committed foodie to find this place.  I kinda felt like I was on The Amazing Race…)

As soon as we found it + met our friends, I was ready for a drink.  Much to my complete surprise + great excitement, they feature the Aviation on the menuI mean, it was just like they KNEW me.

The menu at The Iberian Pig is pretty freaking phenomenal.  The tapas list was extensive + creative enough to fully grab the table’s attention, so we decided to share a bunch of those among the six of us.  Here’s what we ate:

Every small plate we ordered was unbelievably good.  And, we went to town!

This was the best meal I’ve had in a long time.  The Iberian Pig gets points for (1) really friendly + knowledgeable staff, (2) an incredibly creative + beyond delicious menu – there’s so much more that I’m dying to try, (3) offering the Aviation martini + bacon-infused bourbon (which was v. tasty) at the bar + in the dining room, and (4) for its kind-of-hidden-and-hard-for-Lindsay-and-Slick-to-find Decatur location. 

Once we finally found it, though, the giant hunt sorta made us feel like it was OUR restaurant.  Which, in fact, it is now.   :)

On Sunday morning, Slick + I ventured OTP to meet the Rishel’s for brunch + to see their new Smyrna-diggs and meet their adorable new puppy, Rowdy.  Fact – I am in love with Rowdy.

I went into a bit of restaurant-related-panic-mode when we agreed to do brunch OTP, but Mich quickly reminded me that my beloved Muss + Turners* is relatively close to their new placeYes, ma’am! 

*Note:  The last time I went to M+T’s was after I’d been out of work for a week with e. coli (from Las Margaritas on Cheshire Bridge – FYI).  M+T’s “Gobbler” was the first real food I could eat for almost a week.  It was like magic.  No joke.

Anyway, Slick and I left about 30 minutes early from my condo in Midtown to make sure that we weren’t too tardy for brunch – and we got to M+T’s w/ a surprising 10 minutes to spare.  As soon as we walked into the restaurant, we were bombarded with the delicious aroma of smoked meat.  We asked the host what it was, and he informed us that it was one of the day’s brunch specials: Hot Bacon on Bacon on Bacon Fat Biscuit ActionUmmm, incredible!

As everyone perused through the brunch specials + extensive lunch menu, including very creative items in categories i.e. “FISH + Things that Swim,” “Divine SWINE,” “CHICKEN + Things with Wings,” and “BEEF & Things that Eat Grass” (also cute: “Yesterday’s Soup”), I sipped on some v. strong coffee and read the restaurant’s promotional Labor Day Lobster Bake Special:

Everyone ordered brunch items, but I just had to go with the Gobbler again.  How could I not after it rescued me from my Saltine-diet following my e. coli nightmare?  Plus, it’s mouthwateringly amazing…

Gobbler =Shaved house-roasted turkey breast served with Bubby Muss’ Ritz cracker stuffing, Swedish lingonberry coulis and thyme aioli on a toasted challah bun.  On the menu, they call it “THE sandwich.”  They are correct.

If I wasn’t going to order that, I was really considering “Swify Biscuits” on the brunch menu: Two bacon buttermilk biscuits with local/organic Berkshire pork (from Riverview Farms) slow-smoked, pulled, tossed in house BBQ, topped with horseradish slaw and Nueske’s applewood bacon w/ two fried eggs + a side of fruit salad.  I am pretty sure I just gained four pounds writing that out.

We ate like kings (queens = me + Mich). 

Afterwards, we drove around Smyrna a bit, and I have to admit – it’s kind of cute!  Muss + Turners may not be nearly as convenient to us ITP-ers as a number of local brunch spots, but it’s a heck of a lot better than most others.  Dare I say that it’s absolutely worth the drive?  Oh, I dare.

I have too many coupons in my purse.  I’m very quickly turning into my mother.  (Love you, mom, but still.)  So, I’ve made a promise to myself to stop hoarding coupons, Living Socials, Groupons, Scoutmobs and the like, and use/shed at least one a week.  This week, I used my Groupon for Tierra.  (NOT to be confused with Terra Grille, Mr. Shap…)

I drive by Tierra every workday on my way home.  However, in the 6+ years I’ve lived in Atlanta, I’ve only been there once about five years ago.  Tuesday night was my second time.  (The suspense builds…)  :)

Here’s the Q+DD on Tierra:  Tierra is a Latin American + Caribbean bistro featuring cuisines of South + Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico.  Tierra is the first and only authentic restaurant of its kind in Atlanta.  It has received high ratings from Zagat, which listed it among its “Top Restaurants in America.”  Tierra has consistently been included in the AJC’s “Top Fifty Restaurants” and has been on Atlanta Magazine’s ”Best of Atlanta” list every year since it opened.  Tierra’s recipes have been featured in Bob Appetit, Flavors and Atlanta Magazine.

So, there’s some hype.

The restaurant itself is teeny-tiny (only a few tables), but very cozy.  When we arrived, I’d forgotten how small it actually was.  We sat down, ordered some Malbec and started to make some dinner decisions.  Stacey and I relied heavily on the ingredient cheat sheets on the table to decode the menu, which I thought was actually kinda fun.  It’s the little things, people…  The boys started with the black bean soup w/ apple cured bacon, platanos fritos + creme fraiche.  It smelled delicious.

I wanted small plates for dinner, so I opted for the mussels in pasilla pepper broth w/ corn, jicama + cilantro (which was featured in Bon Appetit)…

I have to be honest.  The mussels tasted kind of bland to me, but I LOVED the pionono.  The flavor + texture was absolutely superb.  Stac ordered a caesar salad + chilled cucumber soup, and the boys both chose the shrimp sauteed w/ garlic-lime sauce + served with coconut rice + kale as their entrees.  They ended up with spotless plates.

We decided to order dessert, and allowed our server to talk us into the tres leches cake.  She informed us that it was award-winning, but honestly, it didn’t look like much at all when it was delivered to our table.  It didn’t have to – it TASTED like heaven.  I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was literally gone in a flash.   We honestly debated getting another piece.  At one point, Stuart said that this was the most amazing dessert he’d ever eaten.  And you can quote him…

All in all, I thought Tierra was good + I’m glad I went, but I wasn’t obsessed with it.  It was a bit too small for me, maybe a little too quiet, and frankly I was disappointed in the mussels.  I will, however, be back for the tres leches cake.  (I’ve been thinking about it ever since we devoured it.)

Tierra is a well-respected restaurant that has received a number of accolades – they are clearly doing something right.  Just because it wasn’t necessarily for me, doesn’t mean it isn’t worth trying.  Give it a shot – who knows, it could end up being your favorite restaurant.  And when you do, order the second piece of cake.

Monday, Lindsay and I were invited to sample P’Cheen’s famous, award-winning barbecue at Monday Night Mike’s Bone Lick BBQ and afforded the opportunity to sit down with Chef, co-owner, and ATLANTA FOOD RAVE participant Alex Friedman.  Both were amazing.  This post will be divided into 2 parts: The Man and The Meat.

1. The Meat: Monday Night Mike’s Bone Lick BBQ

OK so here’s the Q+DD: Monday nights, Chef Alex takes a rest and Mike LaSage (P’Cheen sous chef and lead singer/guitarist of Mike LaSage & the Stumbling Troubadours) takes over the kitchen to serve up some undeniably spectacular Q.   Though it was a tough call between the “Roadside Boiled Peanuts and the “Redneck Charcuterie” (house-made jerkeys, homemade ketchup, Mountain Dew and RC Cola Jellies, and homemade “Velveeta”), we started with “Died and Gone to Bacon”

For dinner, we couldn’t decide which meat to choose. Linds and I both find that we default to pulled pork in matters of BBQ, but Natalie, our dining companion, and CWPR darling, raved about the brisket. Plus, the ribs looked delish! We debated.  We hemmed and hawed. Then – divine intervention – we discovered that they ring a BELL when someone orders a platter with all 5 meats (pulled pork, antouille, “Texican” beef brisket and the international BBQ of the week).  Otherwise known as the FAT ASS SAMPLER.

As in, DINGALINGALINGALINGALING! “Who ordered the Fat Ass Sampler?”

We did!

Yup, and some jalapeño mac and cheese and collard greens.  And we finished every. last. bite.   JUST when we didn’t think we could eat any more, we managed to finish some of the BEST banana pudding I have ever had (that’s a huge statement.  I am from Alabama) and a FRIED TWINKIE.


YUM. If you haven’t made it over to Mikes Bone Lick at P’Cheen on Mondays, you’re missing out.  Fact. Go immediately.   You gotta trust a man who’s so committed BBQ he has a tattoo of the cuts of a pig on this arm:

2. The Man: Chef Alex Friedman

On to our interview. Now, we may not have made him cry like Barbara Walters would have, or jump on a couch like Tom Cruise on Oprah… make no mistake, we are serious, hard-hitting investigative journalists and we take no prisoners.  Chef Alex didn’t even know what hit him.

Truthfully, neither did weAlex is a special brand of awesome.  We came all prepared with 20 questions (exactly!) but our conversation took a lot of unexpected turns.  Of course, the first thing we REALLY wanted to know was…which tattoo is your favorite?

Strong contenders were the “road map of his life” that encompasses his forearm (which started out as a doodle in his notepad) and the birthdates of his immediate family around his fingers like rings.  But his favorite serves as a daily reminder of the virtue he wishes he had in higher supply

“Patience”

We were also very interested to learn about his upbringing in an artistic home and how he started his academic career on a ceramics scholarship.  Even more interesting still was his transition from prep cook and dishwasher to sous chef to chef and how he came to own P’Cheen with his business partner (and former DJ!) Kieran Neeley.  It was immediately obvious that Alex is a guy who’s constantly evolving.

When we asked him about his colleagues in the Atlanta food scene, Alex said he especially appreciates “any chef that’s out there doing his own thing” a few who came to mind were Richard Blais, Jay Swift, Scott Serpas, Shane Devereux, and Ryan Stewart.

We covered the most underrated and overrated trends in food (molecular gastronomy? Mad Science isn’t for Chef A-Fried.) and the highly topical street-food movement. (“Long overdue!” Alex said.)  We may just see a food truck from P’Cheen sometime soon…

We got him talking about his resto – Alex let us know that both his best and worst days in the kitchen were P’Cheen’s opening day and that his 3 favorite items on the menu are the mussels, the fish + chips, and the hanger steak a la plancha.  Natalie was shocked that the mushy peas didn’t make the cut and we HAD to ask him about the burg.

I must tell you, our web guru, Mark Wolfe, swears up and down that even among all the recent burger hoop-la, P’Cheen’s burger remains his favorite.

A “Frankenstein of his own creation” (speaking of mad science!) Alex confided there are 19 ingredients in the burger that create the “layers of flavor” responsible for it’s amazingness.  Among them?  Mushrooms, curry powder, hoisen sauce. Alex loves to cook with an Asian influence.

Asian influenced food.  One American owner, one Brit.  A Celtic name (which translates to “moonshine”) a BBQ night.  P’Cheen truly is an International Bistro.

But what would Chef Alex request on death row?  “Jewish Penicillin:” His mother’s potato latkes (with apple sauce and sour cream, duh!) and chicken noodle soup. (Alex confesses, “I am the worst Jew.  I love bacon, I’m covered in tattoos and I’m terrible with money!”)

That’s when we realized: we were just three Hebrews hanging out and enjoying some delicious pork!

Not Kosher. Not sorry.

So, rumor has it that Empire State South is finally going to open in my building (999 Peachtree) sometime around the end of this month!

As a reminder from my previous post about Empire State South, ESS is a community restaurant focusing on southern food - meat + three-style w/ a coffee shop, bar, bocce ball court + a selection of great Bourbons.  Not only is it super exciting for us to finally get a restaurant in my building, but ESS is brought to us by James Beard award-winning chef, Hugh Acheson, of Five & Ten in Athens.  Love 5&10.  Love.

I’m really excited, so I harnessed my inner-Inspector Gadget + did a little detective work today.  It’s not the greatest photo ever taken, but if you look REALLY closely, you can see people building + constructing things inside of the ESS space…which is great b/c it’s been sitting empty for the past six months.

Well, maybe you just can kinda see a ladder…  Whatever.  Things are HAPPENING + that’s all that matters!  (Just take my word for it.)

And, that’s the bocce court they built outside of the restaurant for patrons to hang out + chill around while they wait for a table.  No ball yet, but soon!  Uch, I can’t wait to happy hour there!

The sign is up at least!  THIS is going to be great!  I’ll keep y’all posted re. progress.  Promise.  :)

Last night, a very small group of us Eat Squad-ers made plans to meet for dinner at Imperial Fez in Peachtree Hills.  Frequently, I’ve driven past Imperial’s black awning and have been curious about what the deal is with this restaurant that never appears to be too busy, but seems unfazed by the economic downturn…and by time, generally.

I was the first of the four of us to arrive, and was pleasantly surprised with the authenticity of the restaurant.  Albeit a bit weirded out about how empty and quiet it was, which resulted in a panicked call to Cari, “WHERE the (insert: expletive) am I – and WHERE are y’all?!?!”

Cari informed me that they were on their way, and that I should watch the TV look at the wall covered with photos of noteworthy restaurant patrons until they arrived.  The wall was pretty outstanding - including photos of Imperial’s chef with Governor Schwarzenegger, Teddybear Turner and Reba McEntire, herself!  Reebs!!

The host walked us into a cozy Oriental-rug-covered room, and sat us all down on what looked like a plush, but pretty worn out couch.  This is where all the people were!  Surprisingly, too, there were a sizeable amount of people there – many more than I’d guessed.  Our server asked us to place our hands into a silver bowl, and he washed them for us with water.  Then, he handed each of us a towel to throw over our left shoulder for the meal, and he instructed us to only eat with our right hand.  Yes, hand – not fork. Hand.  So fun!

We selected the 5-course dinner, which runs $45 per person.  We all agreed that that was a pretty solid deal.  We started off with the Harrira Moroccan Lentil Soup with Moroccan Bread (Whole Wheat & Honey) + Moroccan Crackers (Fekkas). Slick said that this was his favorite part of the meal.

Next up was Moroccan Salads with a Side of Red Harissa and the chef’s signature hot sauce.  Our table was not well lit, but I remember eating eggplant, spinach, dill + cucumber and something with rose water, which tasted like perfume to me.  We used the Moroccan crackers to shovel the salads into our mouths.

By this point, Cari and I tired of the towels on our shoulders and put them on our laps.  We appreciated the idea of keeping with the tradition, but we didn’t trust ourselves not to be messy.  Our server brought us an appetizer called B’stella to share, which was my favorite part of the meal, and was super delicious!  Cari told us that it was made with sweet spices, chicken and eggs.  (We used forks to eat this one…)

As soon as the forks appeared, they were used throughout the rest of the meal.  We each ordered an entree, and they were devoured in a flash!  So quick, in fact, that most of the pictures I took are of half-eaten dishes.  Our entrees are ranked below in order of what I liked best to least*:

1 – Cornish-hen Tajine baked with apricots, ginger, saffron + honey.  Garnished with roasted almonds + sesame seeds.

2 – Chef Rafih’s Special Beef Ribs marinated with Moroccan herbs, spices + dried sweet chili (not pictured b/c we ate it too fast…)

3 – Lamb Tajine Morozola baked with Rass El Hannut (32 aromatic spices prepared by the chef) + garnished with onions, raisins + roasted almonds

4 – Roasted Lamb Shank M’Choul baked with cumin, garlic, paprika, fresh cilantro + herbs.  Garnished with exotic wild mushrooms.

*Note: I’m pretty sure that I don’t care for lamb, generally, because everyone at the table liked the lamb dishes the best.  Slick did not care for the chicken because he said it was too sweet for him.

Dessert was yummy, but I’m not sure what it was and I can’t find it described anywhere on their menu.  There was powdered sugar and chocolate sauce on the outside, and the inside tasted like baklava – but not quite as sweet – with apples and nuts.  We also had fruit skewers with strawberry sauce.

We ended the evening with sweet Moroccan Hot Mint Tea.  Before he brought us the bill, our server had us put our hands back into the silver bowl he used to wash them at the beginning of the meal, and he brushed rose water onto them.

Throughout the meal, the skinniest belly dancer I’ve ever seen preformed for us.  At first she just danced, but then she got all crazy with swords and fire. I was v. impressed.

These were the cutest kids EVER! :)

The meal was almost three hours long, but it was totally + completely enjoyable in every way. It was very easy to forget that the restaurant is situated on Peachtree Street not far from the hustle + bustle of Midtown.  I strongly recommend Imperial Fez for a birthday party, a fifth or sixth date, or for a big group of people since almost everything is family style.

P.S. You can get a hookah for the table at the restaurant for $25.

I’ve been doing a LOT of eating out lately and not enough writing (or working out for that matter…) I’ve hit up quite a few new (or new to me) restos that are definitely worth mentioning.   In light of the fact that this is a blog and not a novelhere are 2 for now:

Of all the restaurants in Atlanta, Top Flr will always hold a special place in my heart.  I have never had a bad meal or a bad time there…and you’ve just got to love a place like that.

So, as you can imagine, I was very excited to give The Sound Table, Darren Carr’s new restaurant in the Old Fourth Ward, a try.  Bonus: (and I don’t want to name-drop…but I’m-a gonna)  Greg and I enjoyed our meal with supercute and understated-yet-ultrafabulous DanaPop.com, the Atlanta editor of Daily Candy (!!!!!) and her hilarious and adorable hubs, Dan.

Here’s the Q+DD on The Sound Table: I absolutely loved it. The concept is “street-to-table”, focusing on the exploding street food trend and like Top Flr, TST is also a small-plates restaurant.  The vibe is laid-back and trendy and the food was, in my opinion, superb.

Dan and I both started with the Pho (pho real!) which came with fun little bowls of condiments: oxtail, bean sprouts, cilantro, and shitake mushrooms (while I gingerly played with these items…Dan happily dumped them all in at once, announcing, “everybody in the pool!)  we each followed it up with the steamed pork belly buns… both dishes were per-fection.

Other memorable dishes on the table included a citrus-y ceviche, a shrimp salad, the chorizo burger (actually, it was 2 chorizo sliders…cute AND delish!) and my favorite, the Arancini. If you’re not familiar with Arancini, they’re basically fried balls of risotto and The Sound Table’s were made with black truffle, pecorino, and roasted garlic.  YUM.

Note: The Sound Table is located on Edgewood at Boulevard and the signage is not great.  In fact, we drove right past it several times before Dan had to come out and wave us in.  FYI: this is what you’re looking for:

Also, parking is a little bit difficult.  You MIGHT get lucky and get a spot in the lot right next door, otherwise…don’t forget your quarters.

All in all, I give it two freshly manicured thumbs upCan’t wait to go back!

NEXT:

Miller Union opened up late last year, so it definitely falls under the New(ish) category or just plain old New to Me; and though neither La, Dr. Amy or I had ever been, Miller Union somehow seemed like a perfect place to celebrate…and we had a LOT of celebrating to do. Dr. Amy finished residency, had an outrageously gorgeous baby girl, and returned home to Atlanta just as darling La announced her pregnancy!

I know this is a bold statement to make about a restaurant I have merely tried once, but I think that Miller Union could easily become one of my favorite restaurants in the city.

I dig rustic-chic décor and I always love a scene-y bar (and believe me, it was scene-y.)

So immediately upon walking in the door, I had high hopes. From the time we were seated at our enormous wooden farm table, my expectations were met.  First of all, the cocktail menu is amazing.  I tried not one but TWO specialty cocktailsvery unlike me as usually I tend not to stray from vodka or red wine…but they were both outstanding.  First, the Miller Thyme: miller’s gin, lemon, thyme syrup then the Gold Digger: muddled tomatoes, gin, lemon, and ginger-honey syrup

I didn’t have one BITE that wasn’t outstanding.

Every part of this meal was fresh and fabulous.  We started with the grits fritters with country ham (to DIE for) and the simple yet delicious feta snack…

Then, between the 6 of us, we had the rest of the menu pretty well covered.  My favorite dishes were probably the grouper, the NY strip, and the pork loin…

but I think the best part of the meal, for me, were the fresh vegetables.  I want a VAT of their succotash to eat at home at my leisure.  If someone could make that happen for me, I’d be forever in your debtThe food just did me right; it actually felt good.

You guys, I LOVED Miller Union. It was a great place for a large, somewhat rowdy group such as ours, but I saw several love-birds there on romantic dates as well.

Great times, GREAT restaurant. I recommend it 100%.

You know my heart belongs to Atlanta and ever since I traded the Big Apple for Georgia Peaches in July of ‘05, I’ve never looked back.

However, that didn’t stop me from having the TIME OF MY LIFE this weekend celebrating Randi’s BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday, Randela!

If you happen to be making a trip to NYC anytime soon, let me point out a few highlights from my trip:

1.    Soul Cycle – It’s like a dance club and a spin class all rolled into one.  My girls have been RAVING about it forever and now I know why!  It’s an AMAZING workout and we had a BLAST.  If you have the opportunity to try it out, I recommend it 100%.  3 NYC locations: Upper East, Upper West, and Tribeca (even one in the Hamptons!) Visit Soul Cycle for more information and be sure to reserve a bike well ahead of time, there wasn’t a seat to be had!


2.   Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa – Jess and I had massages at the Flagship 5th Avenue Red Door Spa

…complete with complimentary makeup touch ups by Monique…a Sophia Loren lookalike who has been working at the spa since…well…suffice it to say she’s been there a long time and has done a TON of makeup. So when Monique recommended the Flawless Finish Mousse Makeup, who were we to refuse?  SO glad we took her advice, it’s perfect for summer. The makeup comes out light and airy and it doesn’t sit on your skin like most foundations will in hot humid weather.  LOVE.

3.    Blow-Outs at Salon Nouvelle – I hesitate to tell you because I think this is the city’s best kept secret. Amazing hair for a mere $30 at this discreet little salon on 1st Avenue at 61st street.  (212) 813-0736 for an appointment.

(Another option: if you’re closer to Murray Hill…I used to be a blow-out regular at Monhair on 3rd Avenue between 36th and 37th.  I heard today my girl is still there!  Ask for Lolita and tell her Lorena sent you! (212) 447-7744 for an appointment)

4.    Dinner at Lure FishbarIt was love at first bite. Lure is the cutest little seafood restaurant located directly underneath the SoHo Prada store at Mercer and Prince. I chose the miso-glazed salmon over crispy soba noodles and it was to DIE for.  I was able to steal bites of the girls seafood platters, scallops, and various other fish dishes – everything was excellent.  Plus, inside is cute and swank all at the same time…perfect place for our perfect dinner!

5.    Drinks at Betel in the West VillageLOVED Betel.  This Asian-Fusion resto was a really fun location for post-dinner drinks.   It’s very nondescript (in fact, you could easily miss it!) and understated and with ample bar seating for a small-ish joint, it was the perfect place to accommodate the flood of people who showed up to celebrate Randi’s birth!  The drinks were DELICIOUS – we especially liked the Tart ‘n Tasty – made with lychee juice and ginger (You know how I usually shy away from anything with a kitchy name…but this drink was fantastic and not too sweet!)

6.    Brunch at The Smith – catty-corner from my old East Village Karaoke standby Nevada Smith’sThe Smith really hit the spot for brunch. Mostly, I just loved hanging with 4 of my favorite people over egg white mushroom and fontina omelets and complimentary bloody marys!

DK and I had the BEST weekend together! Here’s a quick recap in pix…in case you wanted to recreate. FIRST…you need a mom as cool as mine.

Then you do the following:

1. Dinner at the bar at 4th and Swift

Amazingness.

We both acknowledge that a bottle of red wine, a cheese plate, and an order of ceviche would not qualify as dinner when men are present…which is why we enjoyed every. last. bite.

2. IMAX and Martinis at the Fernbank

It was “Salsa Night.” 

Honestly, it was a little loud for our tastes, I much prefer the light jazz.  However, it was fun to see all the dancing and all the outfits while we sipped on our martinis.  (Love that DK and I drink exactly the same: Vodka Martini.  Up. Olives. Fin.) Plus, after a martini or two…I find IMAX movies hilarious. (Friday was no different. Cirque was a riot.)

3. Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market

As I suspected, DK LOVED it. All the fresh produce, local wares, and homemade treats were RIGHT up her ally.  We split a mint lemonade, had breakfast pizza, and DK had a Cucumber Basil Fresco Pop.  It was great! Bonus: we ran into a zillion friends (and lots of people who came per the Q+DD reccomendationwhich obviously made my day...including this young man and his parents, whom I adore:

4. Shopping. Major shopping happened on Saturday afternoon. Mostly my bed got a makeover.  Witness:

IN LOVE with my new aqua coverlet, my watercolor duvet cover, and quilted euro shams.  Also exciting: I scored a Calvin Klein Khaki Collection down duvet for $80 at Macy’s.  (I shopped 3 other places, this was the cheapest BY FAR.)  Macy’s is having a crazy linen sale. I replaced every pillow on my bed. Check it. Trust.

5. Lovely lunch at Prime. I always forget about this resto because it’s in the mall.  But DK loved her sushi and I had a great lump crab meat and bibb lettuce salad.  Deeeeeelish.

6. Drinks + Dinner at Holeman + Finch: in that order.  We met my friend Victoria and her husband Hakim, who were visiting from Chicago…because they are MOVING HERE! WOOT!

Reunited...and it feeeeels so good!

It didn’t seem that crowded, but we definitely got there at 8:30 and weren’t seated until our burger (yes.  singular.  We scored the last one. Thanks, Reagan!)  was  served.  (10:30ish?) But we had a great time at the bar. DK LOVED the Aviation and I enjoyed the Shrub (blackberry + tequila on Saturday night).  We demolished a pretty amazing charcuterie plate, I rediscovered the pancetta carbonara, and we tried 2 things that I LOVE that somehow I have never ordered at H+F: the steak tartare and the mussels.  Both were PHENOM. Special thanks to Hakim for showing me how to eat mussels with other mussels.  (ie sans tiny fork.I’m so euro now!

Sidebar: Everyone in the WORLD was at Holeman on Saturday night.  Including Eli Kirshstein (from Top Chef.  Yes, we are both obsessed.) and Lauren…my neighbor from Birmingham!

7. Brunch at Craftbar with La + Shecky

The company alone would have made this brunch phenomenal. However, there was nothing to be desired.  At the end of the day, I think Craftbar is so gorgeous and our food was incredible.  We started with biscuits and fresh blackberry jam

I had shortribs and baked eggs, La and Shecks had poached eggs and steak, and DK (true to form) ordered exactly what I wanted: bacon gravy and biscuits.  Everything was perfect: the coffee, the food, the service.  It was a lovely brunch.

8. More shopping. No pictures.  I was too busy taking full advantage of my last few precious hours with DK.  Sorry not sorry.

LOVED having my mom in town. I’m a lucky girl to have my own personal stylist, decorator, role model, and best friend all rolled up into one woman!  Thanks for coming to play!

and thanks for showing me how people sharpened their lipliner in the olden days!

Bonus: Today is my parents’ anniversary!  Happy, happy anniversary to the cutest couple I know!
