Ok, I had to come home and bust out a quick blog post because I did some local shopping this morning and I’m so happy with my spoils!

Stop 1: Peachtree Road Farmers’ Market

Seth (Seth says!) and I busted it over before the crowd got crazy and I scored some delicious Tuscan kale (which I plan to cook tomorrow night in a recipe he taught me), along with my farmers’ market favorites: Emily G’s Jam of Love (raspberry jalapeño) and some chipotle bacon from Pine Street Market (duh).  I even got a little baggie of treats from Taj Ma-Hound Bakery for Dogs for my little Olive!

Check it:

2. Stop 2: Food Blogger Bake Sale at Phipps

Ok, the hours are officially 10-2, but I feel lucky that we got there at the opening because it was already mobbed!

Stop reading this post, and get in the car before all the treats are gone!

Everything looked amazing – it was positively overwhelming to make a choice!  Doughnut muffins?  Cranberry cobbler cookies?  Salted caramel brownies?  OMG.

I ended up with the following:

Peanut krispie pops, orange-yogurt mini loaf, marscapone cream sandwich cookies

Deeelish!

The pops I’m bringing with me to Watershed tonight for Adrienne’s birthday, but the mini-loaf by Z Tasty Life was delicious alongside our bacon and coffee and I’m saving these bad boys for later:

I also got the opportunity to meet some of my favorite bloggers like Running With Tweezers and The Broke Socialite (love you! mean it!) and see our girl Wendy of @ATL_Events! You guys did a GREAT job and I am sure you’ll raise a ton of dough for Share our Strength!  Nice work!

It was a truly awesome Atlanta morning!

Last week, Seth suggested we check out Local Three Kitchen and Bar, the brand-spankin’-new restaurant in the old JOEL Brasserie space on Northside Parkway; opened by Muss & Turner’s Todd Mussman + Ryan Turner + local favorite Chris Hall (former Chef de Cuisine at Canoe and most recently at 4th and Swift). At that point, it had only been open a week so I practically SKIPPED through the front door thinking surely I was getting the fresh scoop

Uh, not so much.

…but, the PACKED house I walked into (and every packed house for the 7 days prior) would probably beg to differ. Apparently, the word is out (and @365Atlanta is already the mayor on 4Square!  Check out Maura’s post here.)

Ah, well!  Moving on... I couldn’t get over how different the space looks! Given that they were going for “come-as-you-are atmosphere and ‘foie gras in your flip flops’ ambiance” I’d say they hit the nail on the head.  It’s totally rustic-chic… from the tables made from local natural wood (the unbeliveably gorgeous bartop was made from a 30,000lb tree that fell right on Mt. Paran!) to the kitschy salt-and-pepper shakers unique to each table, they really did a great job re-purposing Joel’s space.  They opted to keep the 1 accent wall…

and definitely made it their own. Terri Swartz, the super cute General Manager, gave us the grand tour while we waited for our seats, starting with the pig paintings which pay homage to both the 3 partners as well as their favorite protein:

and ending with a spin through their pretty impressive kitchen! Brunch is served buffet-style right here:

OK on to the food! The menu is chock-full of southern favorites like pimento cheese, boiled peanuts, and chicken pot pie, and gets a little cheeky with sections like “The Notorious P.I.G.” (charcuterie sampler) and items like “The McDowell” (a souped up version of the Big Mac).  They even have a Brinner option! (although they call it Breakfast-For-Dinner.  Fancy.)  Seth and I strategized on our menu selection and settled on the following:

Duck Confit Quesadilla

Cilantro, onions, chipolte sauce

Butter Poached Maine Lobster:

gnocci, carrot, ginger, tarragon

PEI Mussels

Red Curry, Coconut Milk, Cilantro

and, of course, The McDowell with a side of duck-fat fried onion rings

"Two grass fed beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, american cheese...no sesame seeds..."

Now, if you thought we couldn’t eat another BITE after all of that you’d be wrong. Because we TOTALLY had the Warm Chocolate Pudding “Cake” with Capn’ Crunch-Peanut Butter Ice Cream and Salted Caramel (OMG!)

None of these things alone was all that spectacular (except the Capn’ Crunch, of course) but together on a spoon, the synergy was ah-ma-zing!

I absolutely loved everything I ate and our service was just wonderful.   Everyone was warm and gracious and Chef Hall even stopped by our table to inquire about our experience.  You can just tell that this place has heart! I give it 2 freshly manicured thumbs up!

Is there anything more delicious than tater tots?

Gosh!

What about tots…topped with delicious Brunswick stew and covered in melted cheese?

The "Tominator" at Fox Bros BBQ

This monstrosity masterpiece may be a little messy to store in the side pockets of your cargo pants, but it’s definitely one of the most delicious, albeit appalling things I have ever eaten.

As most of my hall of fame meals are, Fox Bros was a suggestion (commandment?) from Seth who insisted on ordering our entire meal (A request I’d never fight!) so we definitely moved on to some pretty spectacular ‘que

including the smoked wings...delish!

But I think the Tominator changed me a little.  I do.

Atlanta Street Food Coalition Street Food Soirée last night was amazing!

Despite the drizzle, there was a huge turnout!  Check it:

The appropriately named "Good Food Truck"

Seth and JJ in line for Island and Thai cones, respectively

Greg went for "The Poodle": hot dog with a French toast bun completed by healthy squirts of spicy mustard and maple syrup

My favorite were the spicy, chilled peanut noodles from Artichoke Bliss!

Salted butter caramel ice cream and Mexican Coke float? Yes, please!

Delicious pimento cheese and blueberry lemonade from Grace's Goodness

The ever-popular Yumbii Truck from Hankook Tacqueria

Finally, can't skip cupcakes from...

...also appropriately named Yum Yum Cupcake!

What a great night – EVERYONE got their truck on!

Power to the (mobile, food selling) people!

xx, L

P.S. If you missed this delicious event…fear not! You can go to the Sweet Auburn Curb Market between 11-2pm TODAY for the Urban Picnic and grab a wheeled meal!

P.P.S. (Thanks for the heads up, Seth!)

Atlanta: right this very minute there’s a revolution brewing! A FOOD revolution! Yes, our food can no longer be contained in mortar-and-brick restaurantspeopleour food wants to be MOBILE!

Enter the Atlanta Street Food Coalition: a group of culinary rogues set out to lift the current restrictive Georgia legislation inhibiting the sale of delicious eats from a vehicle.

Just to show you what it’s all about, the ASFC will be holding various events including 2 this weekCheck it:

1.    TONIGHT: Street Food Soirée at The Hub
Here’s the Q+DD: From 7pm-10pm at The Hub (17th and Spring) you can come by and sample the wares of Atlanta’s favorite foodies on wheels such as Sol Tacqueria, Artichoke Bliss, and the Good Food Truck.

2.  TOMORROW LUNCH:  Urban Picnic at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market
Here’s the Q+DD: From 11am – 2pm it’s the return of the Urban Picnic - this time in partnership with the City of Atlanta District 2 Councilperson Kwanza Hall! Head on over and enjoy the delicious goods from the Yumbii truck, the King of Pops, West End Burritos, and yes, the Good Food Truck will be there too. This sounds like a WAY better alternative to a Lean Cuisine at your desk…just sayin’.Now, I’m not overly political – but when politics concern the free love and sale of food….consider me a lobbyist!

Which food truck would vend if we picket?  Should I make a sign?

A sandwich board seems most appropriate…

When Greg awoke on Saturday morning, I’m sure he was more than a little confused to find me up and at ‘em making breakfast.

I am here to tell you that before G even woke up, I had made my way to the Peachtree Road Farmers Market and back.  It’s even weirder still because when I awoke at 9am with this burning desire to check out fresh produce under tents, I was completely without transportation. Yep, Olive and I CABBED IT to the Cathedral of St Philip (across from Fellini’s on Peachtree) to meet Seth…

Seth Says!

…check out the local wares, and witness a cooking demonstration from Mr. Kevin Gillespie himself.

You guys! That early morning cab ride was $10 well spent.  The Peachtree Road Farmers Market was SO FUN! I ran into a zillion friends (life before noon on a Saturday…who knew?) and learned a LOT about our local farmers and artisans.   After killing a delicious fresh-squeezed Mint Lemonade from the Native Juice Bar

Made with fresh whole apples, oranges and lemons with fresh ginger and mint

Seth, who Farmers Market-s it every weekend, took me on a tour!  I expected to see a lot of fresh produce, which I did, but I also found local cheesemakers, flowers, charcuteries, bakeries, and all kinds of other cool stuff!

Homemade Jerky? Yes please!

Fresh yogurt and cheeses

Even homemade treats for Olive!

Also at the Peachtree Road Farmers Market: super creative homemade jams, fresh crepes, artisan soaps, and all kinds of other fun things including FRESCO POPS!

Ohhh yeah

I’ve been dying to hop on the paleta train for eons and Saturday? TOOT TOOT! Strawberry Lavender Lemonade, my friends.

Strawberry Lavendar Lemonade, my friends.

So, after Seth drove me to my car, I made my way home with two delicious Holeman + Finch Bread Co. bagels

AND THE MOST DELICIOUS BACON I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED:

Chipolte Applewood smoked Bacon from Pine Street Market. AMAZING.

Needless to say… I was a TOTAL brunch hero on Saturday.  And I had a DELIGHTFUL morning doing it. Whoddathunkit? In fact, I’m taking DK back this Saturday… come join us!  (10am Chef Demo with Keira Moritz of Pacci and live music by David Stephens & John Mickelson!)

Can’t wait for DK to visit this weekend!  We will not be black tie for the farmer’s market, swear.

See you at the market!

I’m so excited about the Sweetwater 420 Fest in Candler Park and the Dogwood Festival in Piedmont Park this weekend!

Here’s the Q+DD on SW420F: This 6 year old event is basically a two-day music and arts festival held to better the Candler Park Community by “inspiring positive change and through ongoing community outreach.”  Admission is free, and you can purchase a wristband for a mere $5 to sample some brewskis.

There’s an awesome band lineup (click here to see.) Seth says (SETH SAYS!) his FAVORITE bands are playing Sunday afternoon and the word on the street is the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is not to be missed.

Thanks, E!

Additionally, lots of local artists, a 5K (click here), and an opportunity to get in touch with local, regional, and national non-profits as well and find out how you can take earth friendly practices back to your community and homes.  FAB!

And the Q+DD on the 74th Annual Dogwood Festival:

One of Atlanta’s oldest festivals and in my beloved Piedmont Park! Not only will there be awesome music and food, but Dogwood is one of the biggest and most diverse juried arts festivals in the country! All kinds of artsy-craftsy types and independent genius artists will be in attendance…more than 250 of them! SO excited.
Hit up Dogwood tomorrow from noon until 9pm, Saturday 10am – 9pm, and Sunday 10am – 5pm.

There’s few things I love more than shopping for tchochkies (and priceless works of art!) day drinking, live entertainment, and Atlanta’s AMAZING parks!

Oh yes, my friends.  It is FESTIVAL SEASON. Next weekend:  INMAN PARK FEST!

See you in the park(s)!

Sorry, Olive. No pups allowed!

You guys, Seth and I went to Bangkok last night.

Ok, not really. But it felt that way to us at dinner at the new (and just barely-opened) Thai food restaurant in the old Taurus space, Tuk Tuk Thai Food Loft. Opened by the daughter of the family who own and run Nan and Tamarind Seed and her fiancé, Tuk Tuk is like their funky little sister dishing up authentic Thai street food.tuktuk

As DD, the owner, (who is a.d.o.r.a.b.l.e. and deliciously spunky, by the way) explained to me, the food at Nan and Tamarind is cuisine that Kings and Queens would eat in Thailand. She wanted to open a restaurant that would pay homage to her mother and grandmother’s cooking and the food she grew up eating. Although many people told her she would have to “Americanize” her fare to suit a southern palate, she remains completely committed to authenticity, and I am here to tell you it is AMAZING.

They haven’t had a grand opening yet, and I hesitated to even write about it here because Thaddeus (DD’s fiancé and co-owner) was telling me that they wanted to keep the opening quiet for the first month in order to work out any kinks and also as a “gift” to the neighborhood, but it’s SO amazing I hated not to share it with you all and I know our readers aren’t judge-y. :)

Seth, of course, had been before (dude has some kind of weird spidey-sense or something with new and awesome restaurants) and insisted we go this week, and as I’ve mentioned before, that is a command I am always happy to obey. He’s just never wrong.

Last night, we sat at the bar and shared several items from the small plates menu. Think Thai Tapas. Here they are in no particular order. (ok, I lied. I am telling you about the jerky first because it rocked my world.)

- Neau Sawan - it’s kind of like Thai beef jerky. These little strips of beef came out warm with a side of amazing sticky rice and were so perfectly seasoned and slightly sweet we were in heaven. We almost consumed the whole plate immediately, but Thaddeus clued us in that the dish was EVEN better room temp. And he was right.

- Mieng Kum - Ok. I could eat this daily. It was a spinach leaf wrap with lime, ginger, onions, roasted peanuts, and coconut in a caramelized palm sugar. It was SO refreshing and delicious and there was enough ginger to give it a real kick. LOVED.

- Pla Muk Yang – Grilled calamari (my favorite) with the MOST delicious chili sauce I have ever tasted. I wanted to drink it. Plus, I adore grilled calamari.

* we also got a noodle dish that Thaddeus and DD recommended that wasn’t on the menu with pork and noodles and all kinds of other deliciousness.

One thing that really struck me was how healthy everything was. Everything was grilled and nothing was heavy or creamy. Well, until dessert. :)

For dessert, Thaddeus suggested 2 items: the Tapioca Pudding, which, admittedly, I would never have ordered on my own, and the Old Fashioned Thai Coconut Ice Cream. Y’all. Heaven. In a bowl. The tapioca was delicious. It was served with cubes of taro, coconut, and ice cream and it was divine. The Old Fashioned was coconut ice cream on top of a cube of sticky rice with palm seeds and crushed peanuts. Spectacular.

OK, I had no idea that palm seeds were little gumdrop looking things:Palm Seeds

But they are. Thaddeus instructed us to hide some under our ice cream to eat at the end and they were AMAZING.

Ok, so obviously I liked this place. A lot. In addition to the amazing food and the super cool owners, the space (although not completely finished) was gorgeous as well. A huge difference, in my opinion, from flashy Taurus. It’s understated and just beautiful and every little nuance in the restaurant has been deliberately put in place with careful thought by DD and Thaddeus.

Seth and I were fortunate to get a little tour as Thaddeus explained the décor as well as their philosophy on sharing time with people and attempting to improve their day over a good meal. They are both so passionate about what they do and it shows.

I don’t know if it was the stories or the two ENORMOUS glasses of delicious wine I consumed, but I was really kind of inspired when I left!

Plus, just FYI, a Tuk Tuk is a Thai rickshaw and there is one in the lobby. And that is awesome. Fact.tuktuk

The only thing I love more than hype? Probably pizza.

And for better or worse, Varasano’s Pizzeria has received PLENTY of hype. (See articles from my favorite foodie blogs Blissful Glutton, Foodie Buddha, and Chow Down Atlanta.)
varasano'slogoNow, my heart belongs to Shorty’s, but I have been known to cheat…often. Don’t judge me.

Here’s the Q+DD on Varasano’s: Chef Jeff Varasano moved to Atlanta from the Bronx in 1998 and couldn’t find pizza that rivaled his favorites from the Big City. (Apparently, Patsy’s was his favorite…mine too!) So he decided to embark upon a 10 year-long pizza expedition studying at pizzerias all over the world and experimenting with all kinds of ingredients and variables in search of the secret to pizza success. It looked like this (in my brain.)

(maybe not.)

(maybe not.)

Eventually his quest for the holy grail lead him to his claim to fame: the BOPRE* (*Best Online Pizza Recipe Ever. Click here for details.) Fortunately for the culinarily challenged, like myself, he opened up his own joint in Buckhead in March of this year and was greeted by…you guessed it: a whole lot of hype.

Plus, he’s pretty darn cute! Witness:
varasanoThe first time I went was, of course, with Seth. (I know you’re shocked.) We sat in the back at the chef’s counter, split a caprese salad and each ordered a slice while we watched pizzas being assembled. I can’t tell you what Seth got because I was totally immersed in my caramelized onion slice, it was amaaaaaazing.

I don’t know how it took me so long to make it back there, but DK + DK were in town for my show on Sunday and we zipped by there for a quick bite before they headed back to the ‘ham and I am STILL thinking about our meal!

Between the 7 of us we polished off:

2 caprese salads (standard) and a spinach salad (tossed in house made raspberry vinaigrette with pecans + gorgonzola)

Then

a caramelized onion pizza (made with sweet onions and a sharp Emmenthaler cheese. I’m not really sure what Emmenthaler is but I’m pretty sure it directly translates to “Deliciousness”)
A “Nana’s” pizza (the house special: mozzarella + tomato sauce with a secret blend of Italian herbs. Yes, I said secret.)
a “Salumi” pizza (Varasano’s version of the Meat lover’s. Per my cousin Kevin’s request. All kinds of Italian cured meats with mozzarella, tomato sauce, and spiced olives)
And a “Nucci” pizza (garlic, olives + Emmenthaler topped with Arugula, Capocollo + herbs.)

Now, I know that sounds like a lot for 7 people but the crust is very, very thin. We left full but not overly stuffed and everything was DELICIOUS.

My favorite was still the caramelized onion, and my least favorite was the Nucci pizza. Now, I love salad on pizza, but I thought it was a little soggy (FYI: that did not stop me from finishing my slice no problem. Plus, it was DK’s favorite, so what do I know?)

Worth the hype? In my opinion: totally. The flavors were divine, the crust was crunchy chewy perfection, and it was a lovely little evening with the fam.

Two freshly manicured thumbs up.

Happy Pizza!

Listen, in DK+DK’s house, when you request a vodka + soda, you are readily met with the question, “What’s the soda for?” We are a vodka/rocks family. Period. We all have our preferences: Belvedere for DK (mom), Stoli for DK (dad), Goose for Katie (Brian drinks Scotch. It’s ok, he’s new-ish. I still love him), and Ketel for me, usually.

But when I met Seth for a little post-show cocktail last night at Holeman, he suggested I try Square One organic vodka, so I did. (As far as I’m concerned, a suggestion from Seth may as well be a commandment. Dude has never, ever steered me wrong. Fact.)

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have found a winner!
squareoneIt was deliiiiiiicious.

Here’s the Q+DD: Square One organic vodka is made right here in the United States (based in Northern California, made from scratch in a small family distillery in Idaho) with spring water from the Teton mountains and organically certified North Dakota and Montana-grown rye. The ingredients are so super-pure that the vodka only has to be distilled once, so you get the freshest, cleanest-tasting, yummiest vodka in your little cocktail glass.

BONUS: they are a woman-owned, environmentally-friendly company. You know how I love that kind of thing

Read what founder Allison Evanow has to say about the packaging:

“The packaging had to reflect Square One’s philosophy of eco-conscious sophistication. That’s why the distinct square bottle is not frosted [a process that calls for some serious chemicals!] and the label is now printed on paper made from bamboo, bagasse and cotton, all sustainably grown and renewable fiber sources. And once the bottle is empty the label easily peels off so the bottle can enjoy a second life as a vase or other container.”

Fabulous!

You’ve gotta check out their website. It’s exquisite. They even have a page with amazing-looking cocktail recipes!

As my friend Joanna would say, “I’m not keeping up with the Joneses. I AM the Joneses!”

Nevertheless, Felix, an old friend from my NYC days, was in town last Thursday and pointed out that ever since I left NYC for Atlanta, I feel the need to fiercely defend my city whenever possible.

Felix: “I don’t care where we go, L. It’s not like I can’t get whatever I want anytime at home. Just happy to spend time with you!”
Me: “ATLANTA HAS EVERYTHING YOU’D WANT TOO, YOU KNOW!”

Aggressive! This is why we ended up at Holeman + Finch for drinks and snacks on Thursday night. It’s always a hit. H+F is one of my favorite spots in town and rivals any of my old haunts in The City. (Of course it was Seth who brought me here for the first time shortly after the gastro pub opened last year…but I go often enough now that I feel I can claim it!)

holeman
Listen, I’m more of a party girl who likes to eat rather than a restaurant reviewer so let me just give you the Q+DD on why I adore H+F:

1. Cocktails. The cocktails are out of this world. Try something off of their clever, creative drink menu or just tell one of the adorable bartenders what you’re in the mood for. Last time I was there, I ended up with some sort of gin, ginger, basil something or other…delish.

2. Atmosphere. If you get there early enough to actually grab a seat, the bar area is absolutely phenom. It’s always buzzing – lively, happy, and very very cool. The restaurant side offers a cozier feel, the tiny tables and booths are perfect for a night with your squeeze or a girlfriend or two. I wouldn’t recommend it for a group. Too squished.

3. Food. Ok, I don’t even know where to start, so I’ll just hit some of my favorites: House-cured meats and artisan cheeses (with the perfect wine pairings of course), the carbonara makes me want to cry it’s so good, the fried oysters are beyond, even the little appetizer type items, like the pimento cheese, are amazing. I have literally never had anything here I didn’t enjoy. Now, if you’re a picky eater, be warned that they like to serve “The Whole Hog” at H+F. I mean the whole hog. Get it? Just be a little adventurous and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

4. Burger. I know this should technically go under “Food” but I think it deserves its own category. This burger has been the recipient of a lot of local, even national hype and I am here to tell you that it deserves every bit of it. They dish up about 20 burgs at 10pm nightly, they are sold out around 10:05. They announce the burgers’ arrival with a bullhorn, so it’s also kind of an event! You know how I love that kind of thing. (I hear that they have added a limited quantity of this deliciousness to the brunch menu as well, so…when are we going?)
