R.I.P. Big Red

My second beta fish died recently. (Why can’t I keep anything alive?!) And so, I’d like to say a few words in his honor.

Big Red (2010 - 2010)

Dearest Big Red,

I hope you enjoyed living with Paige and me for the past few months. We really liked you. You had such a fiery little personality, and I always got a kick out of how you’d immediately eat the food that I’d put into your tank each morning - you didn’t look at it with a raised gill and swim away like your snotty little predecessor, Sir Reggie. Remember all those times that I caught you in the net to clean your tank?! That was fun. Remember how you’d watch hours upon hours of “So You Think You Can Dance” + “Celebrity Rehab” with us? We sure will. You were such a good sport.

Sorry you didn’t make it, buddy. And, I’m especially sorry that the toilet didn’t completely flush the first time I tried to send you off respectfully. I hope you enjoyed my heartfelt rendition of the Mourner’s Kaddish.

You’ll be missed. Please give my regards to Reg.

As you may know, radical and visionary designer Alexander McQueen passed away Thursday.

McQueen was immensely talented and served an important voice in fashion. Obviously, it is devastating to lose such an influential designer in his prime…and if you’re looking for some carefully crafted words about McQueen, please, allow me to Google that for you: LMGTFY. (Thanks, Linds.)

J.D. Salinger died today. Even though these days my bookshelf is mainly full of tales of teenage vampires in love or hot chicks in the big city…I, like everyone else, once fell in love with the likes of Frannie and Zooey, Nine Stories, and, of course, Catcher in the Rye.
Admittedly, I was a rule-following goodie two shoes for the most part, but what angst-y 15-year-old doesn’t love them some Holden Caufield?

Maybe I’ll give it another read this weekend, before I start my new Book Club on Tuesday. (We have a very strict “Chick Lit Only” policy.) Maybe you’ll do the same…

However, if you have a personal “Chick Lit Only” rule, may I suggest:

“Prep” by Curtis Sittenfield

When it was released in 2005, I was working at a VERY preppy store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and all of my coworkers were reading it, so I bought it mainly to keep up with the water cooler jib jab. But at the time, it was touted as the female version of “A Catcher in the Rye.” For the record, I definitely wouldn’t go that far. However, it is a really beautifully written coming-of-age story about an awkward 14-year-old girl who goes away to boarding school. Now, the protagonist, Lee Fiora, is no Holden, but it’s a solid read and might be a good light alternative.

But you know…there’s nothing like the real thing, baby.

Friends, Romans (Atlantans), Countrymen, lend me your ears…for today we buried (flushed) our dear friend, Reggie.

Don’t worry, we said the Kaddish first.

reggie even made personal calls. such a good fish...

Reggie was a very special pet we knew for only a short time. We are incredibly sad to lose him, in fact Felix is inconsolable, but we know he is happily swimming in the big ocean in the sky.

Farewell, Reggie. Farewell. We already miss you, little guy.
