Last year, Kev and I went to the Jam with our friends Seth + Loren and we had a B.L.A.S.T.!  (In full disclosure, it was my second Monster Jam experience since I’ve lived in Atlanta.  I’m super into this event.)  This year, Monster Jam will be even more exciting (how can that be possible??) as they’ll celebrate Gravedigger’s 30th anniversary!  More on Gravedigger HERE.

go, gravedigger, gooooo!

Fact: Monster Jam is the single best people watching opportunity in Atlanta.  (NASCAR is a distance second to this.)  Here’s a sneak peak at what’s in store for you shot from yours truly last year…

Last night, Lauren and I met up with some dolled-up girlfriends and hopped over to Jezebel’s Grand Opening Party for STK Atlanta!

We stepped + repeated, drank a few of STK’s signature martinis, watched very bendy dancers put on quite an interesting STK-inspired performance, and we hobnobbed with some big shot Atlantans, including Mr. Peter Thomas (satisfying my RHOA spotting for the month).  Thank you very much.  :)

Q+DD @ STK

It was an excellent way to toast the opening of this NYC-based restaurant (with locations in L.A., Miami + Vegas) that has positioned itself as a “steakhouse for women.”

STK’s space on 12th and Peachtree is GORGEOUS Very modern + plush.  I was particularly impressed with the signature white horns grazing the bar wall.  So cool.

And, we were really pleased with the small bites we sampled over the course of the evening.  STK’s sliders were seriously delish.

We’re super excited about STK!  This place is going to kill it.

Hooray for fall!  Hooray for chili!  Hooray for Cabbagetown!  Hooray for Chomp and Stomp weekend!  (It’s really as simple as that.)

One of Atlanta’s greatest festivals is this weekend, y’all!  :)

Here’s the Q+DD on Chomp and Stomp:
Cabbagetown’s blue collar history is well-known in Atlanta.  Once an old mill workers’ neighborhood, the area now is more known for its trendy boutiques and bohemian lifestyle.  Chomp and Stomp combines Cabbagetown’s roots with traditional blue grass music and a chili cook off.  Enjoy the pleasant fall air and traditional music of the area while eating some competition-worthy chili.  If you are so inclined, there is also a 5k race that kicks off the festival. This event is just another reason why Atlanta is known as the hostess city of the South!

Timing: Saturday, November 5, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
$$$: Only $5 per Spoon for Chili!
Location Info: Cabbagetown is WHERE, exactly??
Music Scoop: Let’s get our stomp on, shall we?!
2010 Winners: Chili Masters

This is such a fun event w/ so much personality that you WILL NOT want to miss!  (Sadly, I’ve been out of town for it over the past two years…  Tragic.)

But, here are a few of our pics from Chomp and Stomp ’09:

It’s supposed to be gorgeous this weekend, too!  Be there or be square, Atlantans.  And FYI, get there early – sometimes the chili runs out.

Happy Chomp and Stomp weekend!

Put on your party hats, people, for Party at Ponce on Saturday, October 1!

Party at Ponce is a kickoff for Ponce City Market and celebration of Green Street Properties 10th Anniversary, benefiting the Atlanta Beltline Partnership and Georgia Organics.  This once-in-a-lifetime party will include musical performances by The Indigo Girls, Shawn Mullins + Francine Reed.

The finest chefs in Atlanta are preparing food for you to sample. The line-up currently includes:

•   Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun’s
•   Anne Quatrano of Bacchanalia
•   Shaun Doty of Yeah! Burger
•   Jay Swift of 4th and Swift
•   Hugh Acheson of Empire State South
•   Ford Fry of JCT Kitchen
•   Duane Nutter of One Flew South
•   Brian Jones of the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta
•   Joe Truex of Watershed
•   Joshua Hopkins of Abattoir
•   Ron Eyester of Rosebud
•   Scott Serpas of Serpas
•   Pano Karatassos of Buckhead Life Restaurant Group
•   Frederico Castellucci of Iberian Pig…and more to come!

As if that wasn’t enough, some of your favorite food trucks will also be on hand to be sure that all of your food cravings are satisfied.

Tours of the old Sears building will be provided during the party on a first-come first-serve basis.

Ponce City Market, a two million square-foot structure, is an adaptive reuse development that when revitalized will house a mix of retail, dining, office + residential space.  A landmark structure at the crossroads of Midtown, Poncey Highland, Old Fourth Ward + Virginia Highland, situated along the Atlanta Beltline transit corridor, Ponce City Market is perfectly positioned to become a hub among its neighboring communities, and a vibrant reflection of the diversity that makes each of those neighborhoods authentic and distinct.  It is a development borne of integrity, one that is destined to emerge as Atlanta’s next great urban experience.

This all sounds amazing, but for me The Indigo Girls performing takes the CAKE!

I am going to DC this weekend + will unfortunately miss PatP, but I would absolutely be there if I was going to be in town!

Find out more about the event here: PARTY AT PONCE.

Party on, Atlanta.  :)

NYC’s 5 Napkin Burger recently opened in Nikimoto’s (R.I.P.) old spot on 10th and Piedmont in Midtown.  I must admit that my patience is once again wearing pretty thin with all of the fancy-pants burger joints opening all over town - enough already, I say – we have more than enough!  Just like cupcakes are no longer sexy to me ( well hellooooo french macaroons – you’re lookin’ good), my desire to eat a hamburger has pretty much been satifsied.  However, I tried 5 Napkin TWICE last week out of sheer convenience to my office and a little bit of curiosity about how it pulls off both burgers and sushi.

I ordered wrong.

JenBen and I met at 5N for lunch and were seated almost immediately.  We had made a reservation, but the space seemed large enough to accommodate lunchtime drop-ins.  We inspected 5N’s menu, closely investigating the burger and sushi offerings, and we both ended up ordering the 5 Napkin Veggie Burger w/ Sweet Potato Fries.  5N’s VB comes with housemade 5N sauce, b&b pickles, lettuce, and a tomato on a multi-grain roll.

I will very honestly report that the veggie burger was not great.  It tasted and strongly smelled of beets and almost the entire burger fell apart as soon as I took a bite into it.  I was unsuccessful in trying to mash together the red veggie crumbles all over my plate, so I stabbed at the burger with my fork.  I did not enjoy it.  And, I’m pretty sure I used 40 napkins (not 5) since the burger disintegrated and there was food all over the table.

I did, however, really like the sweet potato fries!  They were the best of both fry-loving worlds: crispy AND soft at the same time.  Frankly, they were delicious enough to redeem the meal a bit.

While I was certainly underwhelmed by my first experience, I decided to give 5N one more chance.  I felt silly judging a restaurant specializing in meat burgers on their veggie burger alone.  So, Rosh and I lunched at 5N on Friday and decided to tackle its specialties.

It was a gorgeous day and we asked to sit on 5N’s patio.  Although I did not find the patio chairs to be particularly comfortable, I personally preferred sitting outside to dining inside of the restaurant.  10th and Piedmont is an excellent place to people watch and catch some rays.  :)

Rosh and I started off sharing the Southwestern Sushi Roll: spicy yellowtail, cilantro, chayote, scallion, soy wrapper, jalapeno + tobiko.  It was incredibly fresh and very, very tasty – perfect for sitting on a patio on a pretty day!  We were really pleased.

For our entree, we split the massive Burger for 2: 1 pound of custom ground beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, b&b pickles, and 5N sauce.

Here it is in all its meaty glory:

I’m proud to report that we finished the entire burger!  Hooray for us!  Finishing the enormous burger led us into a fairly deep conversation about food displacement along the lines of “say – hypothetically, of course – that I just ate 1/2 a pound of beef…does that mean that I weigh 1/2 a pound more?”  Yikes…

We found room for 5N’s Sweet Potato Fries (which Rosh also loved) and a Tomato, Avocado, Cotija Salad

I am so happy that I went back to 5N to try their meat burger and sushi – what they are really all about!  I was surprisingly impressed with both.  Although, I do have to admit that I only used 3 napkins this time.

I will reiterate again that I’m over the fancy-pants burger craze, BUT I urge you to try 5 Napkin (Yes, I did that in the same sentence).  If you try 5N, make sure that you order the sushi and/or meat burgers – NOT the veggie.  And, let me know if you do, in fact, use 5 napkins.  I’m pretty literal over here, folks…

A few weeks ago, I got invited to the fancy pants, grand opening party for this new event space in downtown Atlanta, the Grand Atrium @ 200 Peachtree (the old Macy’s building).  I rallied some colleagues and we placed it on our Outlook calendars as a v., v. important biznuss meeting.

rendering of the facade

All of the caterers I regularly work with, Bold American Catering, Dennis Dean Catering (my fav!) + Affairs to Remember, were there to mingle + fatten us up w/ treats in hopes of sparking our interest in using the space.  Success.  It was absolutely gorgeous!  It was like something right out of a 1920′s movie with its breathtaking grand chandeliers!

rendering + construction photo

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to take any pictures of the space because I was too busy balancing stuffing my face with tasty hors d’oeuvres in one hand, and sipping cocktails + hugging vendor-friends with the other – but you HAVE to see it, particularly if you are planning a large event anytime soon.  (Frankly, I’m not even sure that a picture would do it justice.)

Here’s a link to its website: http://200peachtree.com/grandatrium_interior.html

Now, I just need to see the newly-renovated Buckhead Theatre, and I should be good to go for my next event season!

One of my favorite neighborhoods in Atlanta is hosting their annual festival this weekend: the 2010 Inman Park Festival + Tour of Homes

I really do love this festival.  (Then, why don’t you marry it?)  Here’s me last year trying to convince Christine that she should buy me some ridiculous wire tiara.  She didn’t…

"but i want a golden goose NOW!"

Whatever, I got over it eventually…  Anyway, here’s the Q+DD on the Inman Park Festival:

During the last full weekend in April each year, Inman Park presents a neighborhood festival widely regarded as Atlanta’s most spirited and eclectic.  The 39th Annual Inman Park Spring Festival and Tour of Homes takes place on Saturday and Sunday, April 24 – 25, 2010.

Directions to Inman Park: http://www.inmanpark.org/direct.html

Top Five Reasons* Why You Have to Join Me @ the Festival:

5-  Unlike the Dogwood Festival, you can actually afford stuff at the massive Inman Park street market without having to empty your savings account.  Vendors sell everything from antique furniture to unique handcrafted wares.

4-  FESTIVAL FOOD!  Let’s hear it for turkey legs + cotton candy!  (You will be walking around all day - so leave your calorie-counting self @ home, because you’ll just burn off whatever you eat there.  Fact.)  Also, there’s live music and dance performances going on throughout the weekend.

3-   There’s a parade!  It’s led by the Inman Park Butterfly, and followed by floats, bands, art cars, politicians, drill teams, Kelly’s Seed and Feed Marching Abominable Band, clowns, jugglers, etc. – you get the idea.  The parade ends with the appearance of the Inman Park Trash Monarch, perched atop the throne-a street sweeper.

2-  The Festival centerpiece, the Tour of Homes, features incredible turn-of-the-century Victorian Painted Ladies and Craftsman bungalows, as well as original contemporary designs and loft conversions.

Get Tour of Homes Tickets: http://bit.ly/bVTZEo

1-  I mean…I’ll be there.  HELLO!

*Not part of the Top Five, but still noteworthy:  Michelob Ultra is an Inman Park Festival sponsor.  This means that you can day-drink to your heart’s delight and then run a marathon – just like Lance Armstrong.

i believe everything advertisers feed me

See you @ Inman!  :)

Atlanta is an incredibly diverse city and it’s excellent for people watching.  L+L went out with some of our favorite ladies on Saturday for a girlie night and saw quite a cross-section of the Dirty Dirty.  Neither of us had been to these joints in a while, but we had a blast and would totally recommend them if you’re at a loss for plans:

Dinner @ Twist Restaurant
Frankly, Twist is not my favorite restaurant in Atlanta.  It’s not really my scene and I’m not obsessed with the fact that it’s connected to Phipps Mall, but the food is ridiculously good.  I think it gets better every time I go, and for some reason this always surprises me.  I just love their sushi!  Not only was the food delish, but the bar scene was bumping.  Twist attracts a really awesomely diverse crowd and the restaurant has a lot of energy.  It’s a perfect starter for a fun night out in Buckhead!
Bar @ Twist

Bar @ Twist

Cocktails @ Ritz Carlton Buckhead Lobby Lounge
The Ritz Buckhead makes you feel all fancy pants – and the bartenders poor with a heavy hand.  The hotel feels old Atlanta and the bar attracts characters.  You never know who you might meet!  (Plus, they have live jazz – which is super fun!)
