Have y’all watched 2 Broke Girls on CBS??

It’s really cute.  (Special thanks to Kev’s pops for getting me hooked on this one!)

Here’s the Q+DD on 2 Broke Girls:

Two young women waitressing at a greasy spoon diner strike up an unlikely friendship in the hopes of launching a successful business – if only they can raise the cash.  Sassy, streetwise Max works two jobs just to get by.  Sophisticated Caroline is an uptown trust fund princess who’s having a run of bad luck that forces her to reluctantly give waitressing a shot.

2 Broke Girls in action...

Catch it on Mondays at 8:30 p.m. EST on CBS.  It’s very entertaining + funny, and it’s the perfect amount of time: 30 minutes live/ about 24 minutes DVR-ed.  (I swear, I don’t know where my attention span has been these days…  Oh, right – I do.  It’s here.)

Enjoy!  :)

Slick + I road-tripped to Asheville, NC, this weekend to spend time with his family.  On the way home from our fun weekend in Ashe-town, I was able to manipulate him into “stopping by” the Biltmore Estate.  Four hours later on the way back to Atlanta, all we could talk about was how truly magnificent the estate was – the house, the grounds, the gardens, etc.  All were absolutely breathtaking!

the biltmore estate – asheville, nc

Slick said that the lawn leading up to the Biltmore House was the “single greatest football-playing yard” he’d ever seen…  :)

For those unfamiliar with the Biltmore Estate, here’s the Q+DD:

The Biltmore is a Châteauesque-styled mansion in Asheville, North Carolina.  It is the largest privately-owned home in the United States at 135,000 square feet with 250 rooms.  Still owned by one of Vanderbilt’s descendants, it stands today as one of the most prominent remaining examples of the Gilded Age.

On Christmas Eve 1895, George W. Vanderbilt officially opened the Biltmore House.  Three years later, he brought his bride Edith Stuyvesant Dresser to the Biltmore, and in 1900, their only child Cornelia was born there.  After Vanderbilt’s death is 1914, Edith and Cornelia continued to call the Biltmore their home, with Edith assuming the management of the estate.  In 1942, Cornelia married the Honorable John Francis Amherst Cecil, and they lived and entertained in the Biltmore House.  In response to requests to increase area tourism during the Depression and to bring in money to preserve the estate, the Cecils opened their house to the public in 1930.

The mountain views from the Biltmore House are pretty outstanding, too.

After thoroughly touring the house, Slick + I walked around a few of the Biltmore gardens.  The gorgeous weather didn’t hurt one bit, either…  Below are pictures from our stroll through the Italian garden, the shrub garden, the walled garden + the rose garden

To cool off a bit from all of our walking + to cap off our visit, we drove to the award-winning Biltmore Winery to test out a few of their signature wines.  Although we skipped the winery tour, we were happy as clams at the tasting counter – and very pleasantly surprised about how good the wines were!

Our favorites were: Biltmore Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc de Noir (Lindsay) + Biltmore Limited Release Chenin Blanc (Slick).

I am SO glad that we decided to visit the Biltmore while we were in Asheville!  Although we could have easily spent a full day there, we saw + did quite a bit within the four hours we were on the property. I highly, highly recommend taking a trip to visit the Biltmore.  It’s gorgeous, romantic, incredibly fascinating (historically + architecturally), AND it’s only a short 3.5 hours away from Atlanta!

Truly amazing.

In case you’ve been wondering, I’ve been loving my iPhone 4It’s a love affair, really…

And now, I’m loving more than just the adorable (albeit not-REALLY-functional) Kate Spade case!

I take pictures like crazy + edit them all fancy-like thanks to Hipstamatic + Instagram photography apps.  I have about 15 Words w/ Friends games going on at any given time (frequent exchange at Slick + my condo.  Slick to Lindsay, “What are you doing?”  Lindsay to Slick, “Playing words w/ my friendsssssss!”)…and I’m getting pretty good at Fruit Ninja.  My entire social network is at the tip of my fingers (fingertips?) whenever I feel inclined to check Facebook, tweet or check in on Foursquare.  I am always in the loop on Gilt Groupe sales + I’m never without my trusty Scoutmob app.

In the past, I’ve blogged about TracknBurn + how great of an app I think it is (still do), but now I’d like to bring two more to your attention:

1 – MealSnap

Jo Duff alerted me to this one.  (Thanks, Jo Duff.)  It’s an iPhone app that counts your calories when you take a picture of what you’re eating.  Within minutes of taking a picture of a meal + matching it to a database of 500,000 food items, MealSnap sends an alert with a range of calories for the photographed meal.  (I haven’t downloaded it b/c I enjoy being in denial…but I think it’s super interesting + could be very eye opening.)

Read more about it here: MEALSNAP INFO
Buy MealSnap for $2.99: SNAP MY FOOD

2. Taxi Magic

(This is Slick’s new favorite app.)  Taxi Magic is the first nationwide free online taxi booking service that is directly integrated with taxi dispatch systems.  You can book from your mobile phone or the Web with a few quick taps, track the arrival of your taxi, charge the ride to your credit card + expense the trip with an e-receipt.  In Atlanta, it’s intergrated with Checker Cab.

Download Taxi Magic here: TAXI, TAXI!

On demand cabs?  I’m down!  :)

iPhone, oh iPhone…I love you.  Really, I do.

Mexican food is my favorite kind.  I love everything about it – from warm queso with spicy chorizo to a sizzling plate of beef fajitas accompanied by live mariachi music.  (Well, I guess those aren’t so far off from each other…)  I love it all.

embracing mexican culture

I am pretty well-versed with regard to Atlanta’s Mexican cuisine + frequent many local Mex restaurants, but I rarely go to Rosa Mexicano.

When it first opened, I was there all the time guzzling down their signature pomegranate margaritas, but as Atlantic Station started to grow, I lost interest.  The food was consistently good + the drinks were always well-made, don’t get me wrong, I just really got over the initial excitement.

Well, it’s back – big time.  Slick and I went with his family this weekend, who were all in town from JAX.  We hadn’t intended on eating at Rosa Mexicano, but close to dinner time the JAX crew decided to check out our H&M (since they don’t have one) + it just made sense to eat nearby.

When I think of Rosa, the first thing that comes to mind is their Tableside Guacamole - which out of towners love and is always fun to watch (+ delicious, I might add).  We ordered up some of that to share + went to TOWN.

rosa's tableside guac

For an additional starter, we selected the Flautas de Pollo: three rolled crispy chicken tacos topped with salsa pasilla de Oaxaca, salsa verde, queso fresco + crema.  They were so incredibly delicious, we all wished we’d ordered more!

I was starting to get full + wasn’t in the mood to completely stuff myself, so I opted for Rosa’s Tortilla Soup for my entree: pasilla chile soup with grilled chicken, avocado, shredded cheese, crema + crispy tortilla chips.  Slick was initially pretty disappointed with my uncharacteristically anti-climactic order, but quickly changed his mind when he took a bite.  It’s was SO good!  Whether you order it as your entree or to accompany something a bit more substantial, you are guaranteed to enjoy it!  It’s light (broth based – not cream), but filling, and was seriously YUM.

Everyone else ordered larger entrees which looked + smelled wonderful.  I heard a bunch of forks scraping plates towards the end of the meal…

During dinner, I sipped on a margarita (which they make v. strong), but I must tell you that one of my favorite Mexican drinks is featured on their menu: A Michelada.  You NEED to try it – especially sitting on their patio on a sunny day!  It’s a Mexican beer cocktail with Tecate, fresh lime juice + spices served over ice in a glass with a salted rim.  I was very pleased to see it on their menu.  :)

rosa's michelada

Slick’s family loved the restaurant + commented on how hip they thought the atmosphere was and how excellent the service was that we received.

post-meal pic

While I was leaving the restaurant, I felt a bit remorseful for neglecting it for so long.  The food is exceptional (albeit pricey for Mexican – and I’m not always in the mood for “black tie Mex”) + I always leave very pleased.  I really do like this place!  I’m so glad I rediscovered Rosa, and I definitely plan to be back soon.

For Men: Drinks + appetizers at Rosa followed by a movie at the Regal theatre across the street makes for a great date!

P.S. Don’t forget about Rosa’s super-fun I Rocked the Guac cooking challenge event!  It’s still one of my favorites + Rosa is great to work with for corporate + social events.

Over the summer, I breezed through Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  (Well, I did at least after the first 100 pages or so.  The securities information kinda held me up a bit at the beginning.)  The story was pretty unbelievable, and I loved that I couldn’t predict where it was going or how Larsson was going to tie all of the story lines together.

I wanted to read the following books, but felt like I needed a bit of lighter reading before I completely delved into the series.  (I was just coming up for air from the Harry Potter + Twilight series – and then reading anything + everything vampire-related.  I’m pretty much a 16 year old w/ regard to my literary taste.)  So, I read some fluff + about a month ago I found myself at Slick’s parent’s house holding a copy of The Girl Who Played With Fire.  It was time to commit.

I brought the book back to Atlanta with me + have been reading it every night before bed.  Maybe not the best material for sweet dreams, but it is SO good – I can’t put it down!  It’s a beast, too, with over 700 pages.  Played With Fire sucked me in from the very first page.  I think that this story is much more interesting (+ much easier to follow) than Tattoo, although you really need the background from the first book to set up the second.

Now, I can’t wait to get through it + move on to The Hornet’s Nest!

WHAT an addicting series!  I’m seriously lovin’ it!

I never thought I’d jump on the iPhone bandwagon.  I really didn’t.  I’m just not that into technology to freak out over a phone.  (Please witness my former command station below…)

Well, no longer b/c surprise, surprise…this weekend Slick gave me my Hanukkah gift – an iPhone 4!

He said that he was sick of watching me text (hitting the same button three times to get the ”I”) on my $5 flip phone (what?!  it was a good deal…).  It was the most perfect gift for me.  Something I’d never buy for myself + that I’m totally + completely OBSESSED with now!

When we were in the Apple store, I was way more concerned about the case than I was the actual phone.  After much deliberation, here’s the one I selected…

It’s lime green on the sides!  :)

However, I spent the following 30 hours downloading apps.  The iPhone is changing my LIFE.  My first app purchase?  Fart App. (obv.)  My second?  Tracknburn.

What’s Tracknburn, you ask?

Here’s a little breakdown:

Revolutionary Food Tracking: Take the guesswork out of daily weight management.  Tracknburn calculates your daily nutritional needs on the fly to help you stay on top of your goals.  As your weight changes, your daily goals will too so that you constantly stay in-tune with your goals.  Say good bye to plateaus!

Accurate Exercise Tracking: You burn calories much differently than the person next to you.  Tracknburn knows that and takes care of it for you.  Simply pick your activity from one of the 500 activities in our database, enter your time, and pick your Burn intensity.  Tracknburn will tell you how many calories you burned instantly.

Weight Tracking: Select the scale, scroll to your weight, tap the lock.  That’s it.  Your weight is recorded and shown graphically on the same page.  Want the details of your weight management over time?  Export a report from your device and you get instant feedback.

Drink Up: Research has shown that simply drinking two cups of water right before eating a meal speeds up the sense of fullness, decreases calorie consumption, and causes more profound weight loss over time.  Tracknburn makes it simple to monitor and track your water consumption.

It’s a great app (so up my alley) + well worth the mere $3.99 to help me set + monitor my weight loss goals.  I used it a ton yesterday + today already.  Check it out!

(In case you were wondering…I also downloaded the following slightly-less-useful apps: Talking John, Elf Ur Face, Bubble, Finger Scan, Air Horn, Etch A Sketch, Glow Draw, Angry Birds, Zippo Lighter + Oregon Trail.)

I l.o.v.e. my new iPhone!  It’s so fun to be a part of the 21st century…

Slick + I had a great 80 degrees Thanksgiving in JAX!  (Hope you all had a good one, too!)

We didn’t win the annual Thanksgiving cookie competition, but we came close w/ our pumpkin cake balls.

We ate a ton over the past week.  A ton.  So, I’ve started to really consider my waistline.  And, I think I am going to need a workout routine change.

Over the next month, I am set to try out these two local gyms:

Urban Body Studios - For their yoga + pilates classes.  And, maybe even to rub elbows w/ The Vampire Diaries cast who has been reported to workout there…
730 Ponce de Leon Place

Exhale Atlanta - For their Core Fusion classes.  My Dallas girlfriends swear by it.
1065 Peachtree Street
Atlanta, GA  30309

I’ll report back – esp. if I meet Ian Somerhalder during a yoga class @ Urban Body!  New Year’s resolutions never stick, so might as well start early…

The big day is almost here…

Hope y’all are all as psyched as I am for a Thanksgiving Day tryptophan nap!

(Personally, it’s my favorite food coma of the year.)

However, I just read that it’s actually a myth. In fact, tryptophan is a routine constituent of most protein-based foods or dietary proteins.  It is particularly plentiful in chocolate, oats, dried dates, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, red meat, eggs, fish, poultry, sesame, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, spirulina + peanuts. Despite popular belief that turkey has a particularly high amount of tryptophan, the amount of tryptophan in turkey is typical of most poultry.

Soooooo, it’s actually overeating a carbohydrate-packed meal coupled w/ over-drinking spiked apple cider + only a slight interest in professional football that leads you to pass out on the couch at 5:30 p.m. sharp.  It’s science.

ANYWAY…I thought I’d leave y’all w/ some Turkey Day Trivia questions that you can whip out at the table if you want everyone in your family to think that you are smarter than them.  Study up!

I had SO much fun in Jacksonville for my first FL vs. GA weekend!  SO much.

...and they did!

As I mentioned a few times before, I was a little skeptical about not celebrating my second favorite holiday of the year to go to the game, but I’m really happy I went.  The game itself was a little boring until the fourth quarter (neither team was playing incredibly well), but the TAILGATING.  I mean, it was nothing short of amazing!  Such a blast!  SEC fans sure know how to pre-game + I did my very best to keep up…

Here are a few photos from Saturday:

Go Gators!  Congrats on the win!  :)

(I’ll always be a Texas Longhorn fan first + foremost, but I have to admit that the Gators are growing on me a bit…)

Yesterday night, I made my mom’s pumpkin muffins for the first time.  She used to make these for my brother + I when we were growing up, and for some reason I always thought they were incredibly complicated to make.  Nope!  After purchasing all of the ingredients, they took me a whopping 30 minutes to make – including the 20 minute cooking time.  They are super yum, too!  Here’s how I did it…

Ingredients:
1 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of vegetable or canola oil
1 egg
3/4 cup of canned pumpkin
1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon of salt
3/4 cup of raisins
(optional: 1/2 cup of walnuts)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Generously grease a 12 cup muffin pan.  Mix sugar, oil eggs + pumpkin.

Sift together flour, baking powder, soda + spices.

Quickly stir together both mixtures.

Fold in raisins and nuts.  (I did not use nuts in mine, but these muffins are really good w/ them.)

Fill prepared muffin cups 2/3 full + bake 18-20 minutes until tops are golden brown.

Remove from oven, cool + remove from pan.  Voila!

These muffins are best heated up in the microwave + butter.  So perfect for this time of the year!
