…is the heirloom tomato salad at Hot & Hot Fish Club in my hometown of Birmingham, AL.  True story.

Heirloom tomatoes. Fresh peas. Fried okra. Corn. Applewood smoked bacon. Balsamic vinegarette. Chive aioli. (+ crack cocaine?)

Of all the great restaurants in all the cities in which I’ve livedNYC, Austin, Atlanta and BirminghamThe Hot & Hot is still the reigning king of my little wanna-be-foodie heart.

It’s always my first choice when I’m home to visit.  I love everything about it. I love the open counter with a direct view of the chefs in the kitchen wearing long-brim fly-fishing hats,

the historic building it’s in (once was the home of “the Upside Down Plaza” – apparently a seedy, yet supa-popular nightclub from “back in the day”), the AMAZING amount of hometown gossip you can glean from loitering in the ladies’ room long enough, and, of course, the SPECTACULAR food that I’ve enjoyed there for years.

BONUS: Last night we got to have a little chat with chef and owner Chris Hastings!  He’s such a cool guy – we chatted restaurants and food and he filled me in on his favorite Atlanta spots and asked me about mine.  We had a brief convo about restaurants with beautiful food and snotty service, during which Chris made a comment that “Food church is dead.” I couldn’t agree more…  these days it really is all about good food and an earnest attitude – which is exactly how I’d describe his restaurant.

Food church may be dead, but chef as a celebrity certainly is not.  I heart you, Chris Hastings!

Chris Hastings and Greg!

If your travel plans ever take you to Birmingham (or you have an extra couple of hours to spend on a dinner commute from Atlanta) I suggest Hot & Hot 100%.

Today at lunch, I ran to Lily’s to get a quickie manicure + pedicure in prep for The Atlanta Food Rave (on Friday) and the YLC Signature Event at the Buckhead Theatre (on Saturday).  I’ve made it a point over the past six to eight months not to wear reds on my nails, but instead rock purples, greens and navys as my go-tos.  Most importantly, I’d decided that I was very much against wearing the same color on my fingernails and toenails.  Total Canadian tuxedo fashion faux pas if you ask me…

ugh, just ANOTHER reason to dislike Mr. West

Today, I broke my streak.  Lily’s just got in OPI’s Fall/Winter 2010 Swiss Collection, and it’s g.o.r.g.e.o.u.s.!

I immediately grabbed the Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous, plopped down with Lily, and didn’t think twice about the Canadian Tuxedo I was about to get on both my fingernails and toenails.

OPI Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous

It’s hot.  To me, it’s a funky party color, but classy + subtle enough to pull off at the office I’m in love!  (Sigh.)  The whole Swiss line is fantastic, but this color is definitely my favorite.

Well, Canada, guess I’m headed back after all…

Like any (once-upon-a-time) Manhattan girl worth her salt, I have a deep-seated love for the Triple B: Bergdorf, Bendel, Barneys. (Hope Mickie D’s doesn’t lawyer me for borrowing their slogan for my lil’ post…  I’m v. nice + I love your $1 ice cream.  I do!)

So, y’all, work is busy for me right now – but I still have a lot to tell you.  Particularly about a few things I’ve been lovin’ lately…

1- Shorty’s Short Van.  Shorty’s – one of my favorite pizza joints in Atlanta - has a new marketing mobile.  Love!

Shorty's short van

2- The Life Is A Runway Blog.  The amazing Mrs. Jessica Liszt, shares her impeccible style with us daily in her new fashion blog.  I’ve been constantly reading it, and admittedly I’m not a biggest blog reader…  Check it out – you’ll love her stylish tidbits:  http://www.jlrunway.blogspot.com/

mrs. lizst, fashion blogger extraordinare

3- Giant Bears for Sale @ Costco.  I went to Costco for my first time ever (“Hi, my name is Lindsay, and I’m a Sam’s Club member) on Saturday and fell in love.  Just saying…

love at first sight

4- Little Kids in Jeggings…  Cari celebrated her big 3-0 over the weekend.  Happy birthday, CB!  We partied at the birthday girl’s diggs w/ a bouncy castle + all.  Please witness this awesomeness:

brilliant

My favorite part, however, was meeting her mini-fashionista niece who was sporting tiny tot jeggings.  The cutest!  Q+DD trivia: Our trend alert about “jeggings” is our second most viewed post next to the one about ”SHARK WEEK!”

so freaking adorable, i can't stand it.

5- My new Stella & Dot earrings.  Aren’t these gorgeous?  They are the Deco Drop earrings from Stella & Dot’s Fall/Winter collection.  Very glam for only $39.  BTW: My friend, Meagan, who just hosted a super-fun S&D trunk show at my place would be more than happy to be your rep: www.stelladot.com/meaganb  :)

love their fall/winter collection...

6- Zooey Deschanel.  I just kind of want to be her.  I re-watched 500 Days of Summer over the weekend and fell in love with her all over again.  Plus, I love that she was in Elf  and rocks out in the very rad indie band, She & Him.

she & him

7- These shoes!  Going out to buy them this afternoon.  Thanks, DSW, for the nifty $10 off coupon I received in the mail yesterday and I fully plan to cash in today.  Just thanks.

you're MINE!

That’s about all for now…  :)

Slick + I are headed to yet another wedding this weekend (3rd this month) w/ some of his legal eagle amigos.

the group over new years

I have to tell you, I really couldn’t be more excited!  Aside from the predictable awesomeness that I can expect from hanging out with these folks, the wedding is in the JERZZZ!

oh gosh, i really hope they're invited!

SO unbelievably stoked!  And, I’ve been practicing…

Okay, so, when I asked Slick this morning about the attire for the wedding, he alleges that he talked with the bride and she said “any dress will do…” which means he actually didn’t talk to the bride because no girl in her right mind would ever leave wedding-related attire so vague.  After I gave him a hard time about it, he consulted reinforcements and we now know that the attire is black tie (Bumpit) optional.

My dress is set, but one very important question remains:  To Bumpit or not to Bumpit?

totally bumped

Although the Texas girl in me always defaults to my vintage cowboy boots as my signature way to jazz up an otherwise blah outfit, I am REALLY considering trading in my country kicks in for my very own Bumpit for the occasion!

bye, bye my beloveds

I’ve just been so inspired by my favorite Jersey Shore party girl, Snooki:

And, my favorite Jerseylicious villianess, Tracey:

Plus, hair height is kinda in my Roberts’ blue jeans

mother.

I think I’m going to BUMPIT!  Heading to CVS in 10…wish me luck.  Ahhhhh!  :)

It’s no secret that I truly love a good deal.  I’d say about 70% of my clothes are either from Forever 21 or Banana Repub. sales, and I happen to be v. proud of that.  Finding a really good deal takes talent + dedication + years of practice, and feels so incredibly rewarding when you do.

My two most beloved online-shopping-deal-finder sites are:

Gilt Groupe: www.gilt.com or join for free @ www.gilt.com/invite/lindsayrob
(I’ve gotten Diane von Furstenberg shoes, Amrita Singh jewelry, Cole Haan + Vineyard Vines purses for next to nothing.)

Smart Bargains (Loehmann’s online):  www.smartbargains.com
(Recently got a really killer deal on a Sir Alistar Rai handmade scarf!)

As far as bargain shopping in Atlanta is concerned, I’ve been very impressed with the extensive shoe and purse departments at Marshalls near the Peachtree + Piedmont intersection, where I’ve seen Badgley Mishka, Furla and Michael Kors purses, and L.A.M.B. and Diane von Furstenberg kicks.

Slick’s been out of town for a week, and I always find that when he’s away on a business trip is such an excellent time for some retail therapy.  :)   Last month when he was gone for two weeks for work, I went out on a Saturday afternoon to buy a new swimsuit for our upcoming cruise over Labor Day, but instead accidentally came home with a new Phoebe Couture dress, two work shirts from J. Crew and a pair of Tory Burch sunglasses.  Oops..

I decided to reel myself in just a little bit over his business trip this week, and went to Target instead.

I’m usually not a big fan of their shoe department, but I found two pairs of the greatest shoes on sale there yesterday!  Feast your eyes on:

These pumps…

+ these sandals…

And, surprisingly, I have to say that both were priced under $20 – and they are COMFORTABLE!  I’m wearing the pumps to work today, and my feet feel just fine.

The Tarjeys in Buckhead and Atlantic Station (rumor has it that it’s the largest one in the U.S.) are my personal favsI’m just sayin’…  Retail therapy works wonders for me, but it’s not always as pleasant for my wallet as it is for my well-being and wardrobe.  Tarjey made that a whole lot easier this week!

i mean, we're just tight like that.

DK and I had the BEST weekend together! Here’s a quick recap in pix…in case you wanted to recreate. FIRST…you need a mom as cool as mine.

Hanging out with her "granddogger"

Then you do the following:

1. Dinner at the bar at 4th and Swift

Amazingness.

We both acknowledge that a bottle of red wine, a cheese plate, and an order of ceviche would not qualify as dinner when men are present…which is why we enjoyed every. last. bite.

2. IMAX and Martinis at the Fernbank

It was “Salsa Night.”

Honestly, it was a little loud for our tastes, I much prefer the light jazz.  However, it was fun to see all the dancing and all the outfits while we sipped on our martinis.  (Love that DK and I drink exactly the same: Vodka Martini.  Up. Olives. Fin.) Plus, after a martini or two…I find IMAX movies hilarious. (Friday was no different. Cirque was a riot.)

3. Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market

As I suspected, DK LOVED it. All the fresh produce, local wares, and homemade treats were RIGHT up her ally.  We split a mint lemonade, had breakfast pizza, and DK had a Cucumber Basil Fresco Pop.  It was great! Bonus: we ran into a zillion friends (and lots of people who came per the Q+DD reccomendationwhich obviously made my day...including this young man and his parents, whom I adore:

lil' Flounder. Son of Flounder and Jen Flounder

DK made out like a bandit (and consequently, so did I!) check out her loot:

Emily G's Jam of Love, classic and chipolte bacon, I heart bacon shirt for Brian, and an assortment of cheeses from Calyroad Creamery

4. Shopping. Major shopping happened on Saturday afternoon. Mostly my bed got a makeover.  Witness:

IN LOVE with my new aqua coverlet, my watercolor duvet cover, and quilted euro shams.  Also exciting: I scored a Calvin Klein Khaki Collection down duvet for $80 at Macy’s.  (I shopped 3 other places, this was the cheapest BY FAR.)  Macy’s is having a crazy linen sale. I replaced every pillow on my bed. Check it. Trust.

5. Lovely lunch at Prime. I always forget about this resto because it’s in the mall.  But DK loved her sushi and I had a great lump crab meat and bibb lettuce salad.  Deeeeeelish.

6. Drinks + Dinner at Holeman + Finch: in that order.  We met my friend Victoria and her husband Hakim, who were visiting from Chicago…because they are MOVING HERE! WOOT!

Reunited...and it feeeeels so good!

It didn’t seem that crowded, but we definitely got there at 8:30 and weren’t seated until our burger (yes.  singular.  We scored the last one. Thanks, Reagan!)  was  served.  (10:30ish?) But we had a great time at the bar. DK LOVED the Aviation and I enjoyed the Shrub (blackberry + tequila on Saturday night).  We demolished a pretty amazing charcuterie plate, I rediscovered the pancetta carbonara, and we tried 2 things that I LOVE that somehow I have never ordered at H+F: the steak tartare and the mussels.  Both were PHENOM. Special thanks to Hakim for showing me how to eat mussels with other mussels.  (ie sans tiny fork.I’m so euro now!

Sidebar: Everyone in the WORLD was at Holeman on Saturday night.  Including Eli Kirshstein (from Top Chef.  Yes, we are both obsessed.) and Lauren…my neighbor from Birmingham!

+ about 934829235 other people! fun!

7. Brunch at Craftbar with La + Shecky

The company alone would have made this brunch phenomenal. However, there was nothing to be desired.  At the end of the day, I think Craftbar is so gorgeous and our food was incredible.  We started with biscuits and fresh blackberry jam

I had shortribs and baked eggs, La and Shecks had poached eggs and steak, and DK (true to form) ordered exactly what I wanted: bacon gravy and biscuits.  Everything was perfect: the coffee, the food, the service.  It was a lovely brunch.
Craftbar Atlanta on Urbanspoon

8. More shopping. No pictures.  I was too busy taking full advantage of my last few precious hours with DK.  Sorry not sorry.

LOVED having my mom in town. I’m a lucky girl to have my own personal stylist, decorator, role model, and best friend all rolled up into one woman!  Thanks for coming to play!

and thanks for showing me how people sharpened their lipliner in the olden days!

Bonus: Today is my parents’ anniversary!  Happy, happy anniversary to the cutest couple I know!

I love you!

xx, L

Today was a good day.   I completed the trifecta: Scoops, Ups, AND Jorts!

If you have no idea what I’m taking about, let me back up for a moment.  This particular subset of the apparel world was brought to my attention by my friend Josh Zobel, who writes a HILARIOUS blog, “Don’t Be Rough” (wrote?  This thing hasn’t been updated since Brit Brit’s alchy-hol problem was big news) Thanks to Josh, here are a few new words for your Lexicon:

Scoops: “Scoops are simply white shoes. Usually ultra white tennis shoes with minimal color if any at all. Scoops are not limited to only tennis shoes but the best ones can be found with dark colored jeans. If you are lucky enough you will spot them with jean shorts*.”Ups: “Ups are nothing more than socks that are pulled up high.

Photo jacked from www.dontberough.com

This isn’t a great example, but when combined with the power of Scoops and shorts they are almost unstoppable. See the line on the floor there? That man has just crossed it and he doesn’t give a dang.”

Jorts*: Jean Shorts = Jorts.  Just in case you grew up under a rock.
I encourage you to read the entire Scoops and Ups post by Josh by clicking here. (and while you’re at it, read everything else he wrote.  The man is a comic genius.  Then send him hate mail until he starts writing again. Thanks.)

For a while, whenever I saw Scoops and/or Ups, I would snap a photo and send it on to ol’ Josh.  I thought my fascination had died… until today when I witnessed THIS at the Syracuse airport:

Thank you, New York.  Just…thank you.

Seriously, y’all.  Halle-freaking-julah for the Bra-llelujah!  (That’s all.)
