This probably shouldn’t be news to any regular readers of this blog or anyone who has ever met me in my life. But yesterday at work, I got to take a little tour of the studios and had a colleage snap this photo:

So, the colors are pretty and my hair looks relatively good and those Shaq-sized chairs make me look teeny…. so I uploaded to Facebook. Obviously.

To my utter shock – I was met with some CONGRATULATORY NOTES/EMAILS/CALLS. Which really cracked me up. TNT is in real trouble if I’m the newest commentator.

I also received the expected response: playful ridicule. Here are some of my faves:

Terch: “Do you even know what NBA stands for?”

Joanna Duff: “You’d be great at color commentary! ‘Would you say these uniforms are more of a grape or aborigine?’”

PT: “Now that you’re in, if you ever need a correspondent …let me know. I could get some live interviews in the locker room. It wouldn’t even be like work for me!”

It’s clearly not happening.

So if you’re reading this, Charles Barkley – just to clear up any confusion: I am NOT coming for your job.

xx, L

PS But if for some reason, you wanted to put me on TV… I will certainly learn something about Basketball. Trust.

Yesterday did not start off great.

You see, I walked out to my parking garage to find my back left tire…

Flatter than a pancake.

I managed to get to the Costco in my neighborhood at Town Brookhaven, and after waiting for an hour and a half for Costco Tire Center to open, I was informed that though the puncture from the NAIL I drove over could be repaired, my tire was essentially mulch on the inside and would have to be replaced.  HOWEVER – they didn’t have the tire I needed in stock at that location so they fitted my car with a lovely donut and instructed me to high tail it to the Perimeter Costco to get this blessed tire.

In the 5.6 miles between the two Costcos…apparently I rolled through a stop sign and was promptly pulled over by a motorcycle cop.

Yep.

However, alls well that ends well because it just so happens that my evening was so spectacular that it quite literally saved the day.

Check out my two-step remedy:

Step 1.  Core Fusion® Cardio at Exhale Mind Body Spa in Midtown

I decided I had mooched off Lindsay’s Exhale membership for long enough so I called up our buddy Anne Marie to get myself my very own membership!  Yay!

Linds has been preachin’ the gospel about Exhale for a while, but as a reminder, the Q+DD on Core Fusion® Cardio is this: It’s a “calorie burning, sweat inducing, body sculpting, power-packed fitness experience, masterminded by the co-creators of Core Fusion®, Elisabeth Halfpapp and Fred DeVito. Merging cardio with intense strength and flexibility moves, this 60-minute class generates maximum calorie burn, resulting in defined abs, sculpted legs, and high, rounded glutes.”

I am here to tell you it was ridiculously tough and I felt like a bazillion bucks when I finished.

After our class, Linds, our girlfriend Stef, and I met a handful of our fabulous friends for the BEST thing that ever happened to Wednesdays (and also step 2 in my remedy.)

Step 2.  LADIES NIGHT at Piola!

Reminder: if you are a lady, EVERY Wednesday, you can enjoy BOTTOMLESS wine or sangria with the purchase of an entrée or a pizza.  I suggest both.

I’d also suggest ordering absolutely ANYTHING with the Catupiry cheese.  ET turned me on to this amazing soft cheese from Brazil and it pretty much just makes everything better.

There you have it, ladies.  Straight from LK.  There is nothing a little detox/retox and a GNO* can’t fix.

Happy Thursday, friends.  It’s ALMOST the weekend.

xx, L

*Girls’ Night Out.  Duh.

Lately, the definition of the word “Winning” has been…pretty loose. To clear up any confusion, let me use the word in context… here are some recent WINNERS around town:

1. Aviation Sorbet at H. Harper StationWINNING!

You know how much the Q+DD loves a good ol’ Aviation – so when I saw this on the menu, I couldn’t resist asking for a bite. (even though the sorbet accompanies the lemon twinkie and we had selected a chocolate dessert…) It was delish! Light and refreshing as a sorbet should be, but with that pine-y tartness of an Aviation. Brilliant!

2. Frozen Jack and Cokes at Victory Sandwich Bar …. WINNING!

Yep. Jack and Coke slushies. Served in an adorable little mason jar. For a mere $4.

Look how happy they made us! Win!

We went post-dinner, but the menu looked pretty dang spectacular. I can’t wait to go back and chow down on a sandwich while I sip my frozen J&C sometime very soon…

3. Peanut Bacon Brittle at Sauced … WINNING!

I’d have to employ the old Pro-Con-Pro to tell you about my experience at Sauced,
but I’d definitely anchor that P-C-P with the peanut bacon brittle – what a win! The presentation was so cute and kitschy in it’s little paper carnival bag and while the brittle could have used some more bacon in my opinion (can you ever have enough?) – it was delicious nonetheless.

4. Phatty Cakes at Cakes and Ale… WINNING!

Ginger cookies. Vanilla mascarpone filling. The end. Phatty Cakes for the WIN!

Cakes & Ale (404) 377-7994 254 W Ponce De Leon Ave Decatur, GA 30030 www.cakesandalerestaurant.com

5. Maple Crème Caramel with Brown Sugar Bacon Cookie at Abattoir… WINNING!

We celebrated G’s birthday at Abattoir and it was spectacular, as usual. (Seriously underrated burger. Seriously.) We ended the night with the Maple Crème Caramel with Brown Sugar Bacon Cookie and it rocked my face off. It was DELICIOUS and just a really amazing flavor combination. Winner with a capital W. And and exclamation point. !

6. Black Swan/White Swan Cookies by Jessica Hayden … WINNING!

My amazing friend Jessica made homemade Black & White Cookies for Meredith’s annual Oscar party this year.

Jessica with another delicious Oscar-related confection

Which was SO appropriate since both Meredith and I chose to go as Natalie Portman for the party. (Also a WINNER.)

(Me, as Natalie proper and Mer as her Black Swan alter-ego Nina)

I was SO impressed. They were delicious and cake-y and perfect. If you want to make them yourself – you can view the recipe HERE. (Thank you, Paula!) I LOVE a Black and White cookie. They’re so Zen. As Seinfeld says, “look to the cookie!” Win!

Now that we’ve discussed the proper use of the word “Winning,” Let’s discuss it’s antonym:

You know your day is going to be amazing when it starts with a Southern 64 (Hendricks Gin, GA Muscadine Shrub, Sparkling, Lemon Twist) and a delicious brunch at Empire State South with these two:

Clever conjunction of their names TBD. Bairchila?

I can’t help it – whenever I heard the term “Ladies’ Night” I think of Leon Phelps.

“Oooooh….It’s a LAYYYDEEEEE!”

Or you know, the song.

It's Ladies' Night...and I feel alright...

But maybe not anymore now that ET turned me on to Ladies’ Night at Piola restaurant in Midtown…

On Wednesdays (yes, every Wednesday) this cute little pizza and pasta shop is pouring free Courvoisier, wine and Sangria!

The free booze, coupled with the delicious pizzas and salads we shared, and the incredibly charming manager made for 4 very happy ladies…and our bill was a mere $12 and change!

See you next Wednesday!

Saturday at Corner Café, ET and I dined on eggs Benedict in perfectly coordinated outfits, freshly shampooed hair, and artfully applied makeup…

Trust me, we were CUTE

and saw no one.

Conversely, today, with my dirty hair piled on top of my head in a bun, makeup nowhere to be found, and in the craziest outfit I could have pulled out of my closet…

I have 235109241 tubes in my posession and couldn't locate ONE today???

…I ran into no less than 15 people at Goldberg’s.

Of course.

Confession: I am a book club slacker. We’re on our 4th installment and I haven’t read a single sentence of the book.  I mean, I read The Glass Castle (loved it) and of course I read Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang

Duh

…but I must admit, I have not even cracked our current assignment, The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

As one of my favorite authors, Augusten Burroughs says, “I myself am made entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions.”

Luckily, my book club ladies’ love is unconditional and they didn’t appear to judge me one bit when I managed not to read a single sentence of last month’s book, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, even though I hosted the club at my condo.

Luckier still, the group is comprised of some pretty spectacular chefs! So while the girls were discussing Steig, I found myself face first in all their delicious offerings.

The Club and The Carnage

There wasn’t a bad dish on my coffee table that night, so I BEGGED the girls to send me their recipes ASAP so I could share them with you now…almost a whole month later. (please refer to the Burroughs quote above.)

Anyway, better late than never!

Buffalo Chicken Dip a la Jen DiLorenzo
1. Mix: One pound chicken (cooked and shredded) and one bottle of your favorite wing sauce and layer in your oven-safe serving dish (like a Pyrex)
2. Mix: one small bottle of Ranch dressing and two blocks of cream cheese
NOTE: It mixes best if you warm the cream cheese in the microwave (be careful not to overheat!)
3.  Layer cream cheese/ranch mixture over chicken mixture
4.  Cover with shredded cheese (Jen likes Monterrey Jack).
5.  Bake at 350 until cheese is melted…and serve!

Avocado and Serrano Salsa a la Ellen Terchila
Ingredients:
1/2 Cucumber, diced
2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and coarsely chopped
1 red onion, diced
2 Serrano chilies, finely chopped
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Juice of 1/2 Lime

In a large bowl, combine the first 4 ingredients.  Toss well.  Gently stir in the salt, pepper, and lime juice (take care not to let avocado get mushy!)
Serve immediately or cover and put in fridge for up to 1 day.  Return to room temp before serving.

BONUS: Ellen notes,  “I learned that this also makes a fabulous “day after” sandwich by toasting two pieces of whole grain bread, scooping on a delicious helping of the salsa, and a slice of Havarti cheese…just saying.” (You are so adorable, E)

Last but not least…

Spicy Corn + Cheese Dip a la Shanon Perry

Ingredients:
1 bar of cream cheese
1 4-5 oz package of goat cheese (S likes to get the kind that has the seasoning in it, but get what you like)
4 cups of sharp white cheddar cheese
2 regular sized cans of white corn kernels (drained)
5 fresh jalapenos – remove the ribs and the seeds, then dice into small pieces (you can obviously adjust this to your own palette)
3-4 scallions – finely chopped
S says that the following ingredients are estimates…she just likes to add and taste as she goes and suggests you do the same.
2 tsp of garlic salt
2 tsp of fresh ground pepper
1 tbsp of Mexican Chili Powder

Add cheeses and corn to an oven/microwave proof bowl. Warm in the microwave for about 2 minutes to soften the cheeses.  Stir in remaining ingredients, but keep aside enough cheddar to sprinkle over the top of the mixture.  Once you’ve sprinkled the rest of the cheddar over the top of the mixture, then put the bowl back in the microwave for about 5 minutes until the cheese is melted on top and the mixture is heated through – OR – you can place the bowl in a 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes or so.

Serve each of these with your favorite chip…pita chips or Fritos scoops have been tried and were proven to be a success!

I can’t tell you which was my favorite…they were ALL delicious! It’s always good to have a good go-to dip, so next time you have to bring an app or a side, try one of these!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta dip! (couldn’t resist.)

xx, L
