Dearest readers,

I am very excited about this really great event I heard about yesterday!  :)

Okay, obviously posting fliers on the blog is not my forte.  I only have v. limited computer skillz and absolutely no idea how to re-size things on here, BUT I am more than happy to break it down for you elementary-school-birthday-party-invitation style…

you're invited!

What:  Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)* Young Leadership Committee is throwing a Rock the Cure “brews and blues” (that is so cute!) event.  Rock the Cure features the best Atlanta has to offer – two great bands, Mama’s Love and Lost City, delicious food, Sweetwater brews and exciting raffle prizes!

Where:  Sweetwater Brewing Company!

When:  Saturday, June 19, 2010  7:30 – 11:00 p.m.

Ticket Information:  General Admission Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 at the door.

Fine Print:  Must be at least 21 years old.  ID’s checked at the door.

For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.jdrfrockthecure.org

*JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  All proceeds from this event benefit JDRF.

I think it sounds like so much fun, and it’s for such a great + worthy cause!  Also, Kristen Stewart supports the JDRF (as evidenced below).

Although she can be kind of a twerp, KStew gets to regularly make-out with hot vampires + werewolves – so I’m kinda in for whatever she’s in for.

it's almost time again!

Just sayin’…

Olive will be there along with her friends Lola, Cooper, and Sebastian…

There were over 300 participants at the Walk for Lupus on Saturday, raising around $25,000 and TEAM KATIE came in second place…missing out on first by a VERY narrow margin of only $30!

Team Katie!

We were stylin’ in the purple tiaras Katie brought us

Even my dad found a manly way to wear a tiara!

…and stayed hydrated thanks to the superawesome TEAM KATIE water bottles courtesy of Jennifer Kulbursh and Kamin and Associates!

Katie was a total rock star!  They gave her a tent for a home base

and she was interviewed by our local news station, CBS 42!

See the video here!

My family and I are so proud of my seestah…

…and SO grateful for ALL of your support. THANK YOU so much to everyone who donated and participated!

xx, L

PS Thanks for your excellent photography, Robin!  xo

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you already know a LOT about my sister.

First of all, you know she’s absolutely adorable

Duh.

and married to the best guy in the world

Love the Helds.

You also probably know that she’s…

a wine enthusiast

a lover of fine food

an excellent dancer
a Jenga ninja

a shoe expert
and generally awesome and a total riot to be around.

I think that hits all the high points, no?

What you may NOT know is that she suffers from a chronic auto-immune disorder called Lupus.

The Q+DD on Lupus is this: Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints and/or organs inside the body). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from foreign substances, like bacteria and viruses. With lupus, your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues and creates autoantibodies (“auto” means “self”) to attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body(www.lupusfoundation.org.)

While Katie’s Lupus does affect her everyday life in many ways, Lupus is largely a disease of “flares” and “remission” and Katie is a total fighter and does a good job of showing Lupus who’s boss.

However, for many people, Lupus is quite debilitating and can be fatal.  As of now, the cause of Lupus is unknown and there is no cure.

The Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) is the nation’s leading nonprofit voluntary health organization dedicated to finding the causes of and cure for lupus and providing support and services to all people affected by lupus and next weekend my sister will once again be leading TEAM KATIE in the Birmingham “Walk for Lupus Now”

Last year’s team was incredibly successful in their fundraising goals and in being totally adorable. Witness:

Tiaras for everyone!

Please consider making a donation to TEAM KATIE…every little bit helps…and if you are a Birmingham reader, Katie would LOVE to have you as a part of her team next Saturday, June 5th (and if you wanna come with us from Atlanta, there’s room in the car with La, Brooke, Olive and me!)

Please click here to visit Katie’s personal fundraising page!

See ya in Birmingham!

I’m a little obsessed with my best girlfriend’s sister-in-law, Mara.  She’s incredibly intelligent, super hip, an excellent advice giver + listener, CANADIAN (ha!) and a mother of three.  Rumor has it, Mara thinks I’m pretty super duper, too.  Although we live a gazillion miles away from each other and I’ve actually only spent QT with her in person twice, I adore her and I have aspirations of making her my international pen pal.

mara (right) + me (middle) in L.A.

The other day I received a small package in the mail from Canada.  I thought my probiotics had finally arrived, but instead it was a silver whistle necklace and a small white booklet with the words “FALLING WHISTLES” written on it in large grey letters.  A note from Mara was enclosed.

As I read the booklet, my heart began to ache.  Falling Whistles is a non-profit campaigning for peace in the Congo.  The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to the world’s largest and most deadly war.  During the past 10 years, roughly 6 million people have died and nearly 1,500 people continue to lose their lives daily.  Sexual violence is more rampant in the Congo than anywhere else in the world, and thousands of children are involved in the war.

There are a number of reasons for the war, dating back over a century.  However, most of the conflict is tied directly to the country’s vast natural resources.  They are both a blessing and a curse, making the Congo a country of great potential and a frequent victim of exploitation.  The minerals found in Congo are used in consumer electronics, including laptops and cell phones.   While many benefit from the mineral trade, it is the Congolese people who bear the consequences of a conflict that sustains profitable mining enterprise.

The Falling Whistles story reveals two urgent needs:
1.  Children escaping the war-region.
2.  Children forced to the frontlines of war.

The escaped children are often traumatized and have few options for survival.  The result is that they are regularly pulled back into the cycle of war.  In the Congo,  the Falling Whistles organization is developing partnerships with community leaders who are rehabilitating these children through education, art, sports, music, human rights education, vocational skills training, medical treatment and nutritional services.  Each organization is working to give children the tools to be whistleblowers and stand up for peace within the war-region.

To help the children forced to the frontlines of war, the war must end.  The first step toward that goal is to change the way we advocate in the West.  Sold out of pockets, living rooms, garages, concerts, warehouses and retail stores, the falling whistle necklace gives you the opportunity to spread the word about the Congo and speak up for peace.  Wear your whistle necklace as a simple of protest and help to elevate this important conversation.

join the coalition for peace in the congo

I spent the weekend in Austin, and actually saw a number of falling whistles hanging in windows at the vintage + hipster stores lining South Congress.  Apparently, it’s becoming the new TOMS shoes   My whistle is now hanging from a tall floor lamp in my room.  If I can put together the right outfit, I am definitely planning to wearing it.

the original falling whistle necklace: $34

Get your falling whistle here:   http://bit.ly/qA57
***100% of the proceeds are used to rehabilitate war-affected children in the Congo and advocate for their freedom.***

Thank you so much, Mara.

I have been a little MIA this week. I have so much on my mind that there hasn’t been a whole lot left over for creative thought, but never fear: I have a whole list of stuff with which to bore you when I get those creative juices flowing again!

In the meantime, here is a mish-mash of stuff I think is very important right this very minute.

1. TONIGHT: Young Professionals of Atlanta American Cancer Society EventThe Ginger put this one together so it has to be cool!

He says, “Come join the Young Professionals of Atlanta for the American Cancer Society as we begin our fundraising push for the 2010 Relay For Life, being held April 9th. Our free networking event will give everyone a chance to mix and mingle while your suggested donation will allow you to be eligible for our prize drawings, including merchandise from our Relay for Life partner, Banana Republic/GAP.

100% of the Straits Happy Hour donations will be donated to Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an all day event designed to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Each team has a member walking the track during a 24-hour period to symbolize cancer never sleeping.

Visit our ACS Young Professionals Relay for Life page by clicking here.”

I think it sounds like an awesome time for an awesome cause. Just go, OK?

2. Jenn Falik
Are you following Jenn Falik on Twitter and/or reading her blog? If you’re not, then you should. Jenn is genius. I’m not just saying that because she’s my sister’s cousin by marriage, Jenn is an actual style and beauty expert (for real, y’all. Check it) and really knows her stuff.   Whenever Jenn recommends a product or an article of clothing or whatever I will most likely buy it the next day: Fact.

Case in point: today I had the most amazing shower and my skin feels incredible because of this phenom product she recommended the other day:

L'Occitane Almond Shower Oil

I can safely tell you that I would never have purchased this on my own because ordinarily almond scented ANYTHING makes me want to hurl but I figured, if Jenn is this into it, it must be awesome. And it was.

Read her post here. Everything she said is true. Brilliant.  Falik for president! Plus, she is so cute, right?
3. LuckyFest is SATURDAY. Don’t forget $5 off with promo code “kraselsky” (no caps) The weather isn’t going to be great, but less than great weather = a great excuse for GREEN WELLIES!
4. I will be performing in 2 more performances of A Sunday Afternoon at Loehmann’s. 03/21 and 03/28 both at 2pm. www.ansleyparkplayhouse.com for tickets (or email me at thequickanddirtydirty@gmail.com)

Camo Baby will be there too

I think that is it for today. I am off to get my spray tan on so I can be dazzling at this cute couple’s wedding this weekend:

Can't wait! I heart the future Paridys!

Happy Thursday, y’all.

Avenue Q is back in town in May!  Hooray!!  (I am a fantastic poet, don’t you agree?)

Although Slick + I just saw Spring Awakening @ the Fox Theatre last night w/ the Barocai…

@ the Fox through March 14! Get tix ASAP!

…and it was wonderful, all I can think about is Avenue Q!!

Avenue Q, Spring Awakening and Jersey Boys are my favorite plays I’ve seen on Broadway.  I’ve seen them in Atlanta, too, and I think they all have good traveling casts – particularly Ave. Q.  I’m not thrilled that Ave. Q is going to be @ Cobb instead of the Fox this time, but hopefully the acoustics will be better in a new location.  (Love the Fox, but that theatre has the worst acoustics EVER.)

Anyway, I hope you have all already seen Ave. Q, but if you haven’t – you absolutely must!  This play is perfect for everyone – except, well, children.  Parents: Don’t be fooled by the cute puppets!  However, I definitely suggest you drag along your football-lovin’, anti-musical, short attention span buddies and better halves to the show!  They’ll love it.  Promise.  :)

Pre-sale tickets are already available.  For a limited time, you can insert the password “IMPACT” into the Ticketmaster promotional box and receive $5.00 off of each ticket purchased.  Ticketmaster will make a $5.00 donation to the organization, Positive Impact.

More on Positive Impact here:

See you @ the show!  :)

Monday night was Atlanta Magazine’s BEST OF ATLANTA party and you better believe Christine, Lindsay and I were in attendance. The Q+DD on BoA is this: zillions of superawesome Atlanta restaurants serving miniature plates of signature dishes + wine, beer, and liquor companies with samples to share + silent auction + live music…and all the proceeds go to Camp Twin Lakes. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend.

Here is our night…in pictures!

First things first. We made a beeline for Holeman and Finch…duh. They were dishing up miniature versions of their FAMOUS burg! Of course, they weren’t quite as good as the full-sized version…but they were pretty darn close. After a cocktail at the Ciroc vodka stand we dashed over to the Infinity VIP lounge to fulfill our volunteer duties greeting VIP guests:

Brian: "we're here to welcome you to VIP. As less important people, we welcome you!"

We schmoozed and sipped wine and and were entertained by local magician, Joe Turner. (Who, incidentally, was not employed by Camp Twin Lakes, Room and Board, OR Infinity. Just a really nice magic dude!) After we were sprung, we proceeded to consume…121957249581 calories in both food and alcohol and made lots of new and interesting friends!

Witness:

"all night long! all night long!"

(we love bacon, too.)

Our favorites included tacos from Nuevo Laredo, cookies and crème cupcakes and peanut butter truffles from Highland Bakery, sushi from Nori Nori, bacon and maple popcorn from the Porter, experimental pizzas from Mellow Mushroom, and we all went back for seconds at Sublime Donuts. To. Die. For.
Buckhead Life, though? Fail. The emperor has no food!

Kyma Fail.

Fish Market Fail.

Buckhead Diner Fail.

The biggest laugh I had all night was we walked by the GA Aquarium booth and Lindsay said she hoped they weren’t serving fish

Sushi?

We had a BLAST, everyone did! Can’t wait for next year!

Well, not so much a “guy” as a girl Specifically, a Girl Scout.

I know what you’re thinking:
the Girl Scouts is a truly remarkable program for young women, teaching them independence and self-confidence while cultivating natural leadership abilities and providing a sense of community.  However, the likelihood that you would turn to one in any sort of emergency is pretty darn slim.

The truth is, you could easily find a more helpful scout if you were in a pinch.  Eagle Scouts, for instance, are serious business. Let’s face it. If Girl Scouts today are anything like my own troop back in Mountain Brook, AL, you’d be better off calling Troop Beverly Hills.
troop beverlyhillsBut before you start turning your nose up at my excitement of knowing a Girl Scout, let me ask you this question:

How do you buy your Thin Mints?

Unless you have already moved to the ‘burbs and have precious little troopers knocking each other over to knock down your door, they can be pretty hard to find! In fact, as a high-rise dweller who rarely grocery shops during normal hours (missing the stands often found outside), I haven’t seen hide nor hair of a Trefoil in years.
girlscoutstand.jpgUntil TODAY. My co-worker’s niece is finally old enough to sell ‘em!

Obviously, everyone’s favorite is the Thin Mint.  If you don’t know what it is, you are from Mars and I can’t help you.  Sorry.  I love me a Thin Mint, especially because at 35 calories a wafer, they aren’t THAT bad.  (unless you eat an entire sleeve.)
thinmintgraphicbig
My PERSONAL favorite is the Tagalong. Round cookie.  Layer of peanut butter.  Covered in chocolate.  Bam.
tagalongHowever, for me, peanut butter is the gateway drug, so these are dangerous at Chez Lauren.  A lighter GSC alternative is the Do-si-do: oatmeal cookie sandwich with a peanut butter filling.  Yum.

Here are the other cookies (in no particular order):

Lemon Chalet Cremes (cinnamon ginger spice with a lemon crème filling)
Trefoils (shortbread)
Samoas (vanilla cookies, covered with caramel, rolled in toasted coconut and striped with chocolate)
Dulce De Leche (bite-sized cookies with milk caramel chips)
Thank U Berry Munch (hearty cookies with cranberries and white fudge chips and crispy rice)

BONUS:
If you have 0 willpower, like myself, but still want to support the Girl Scouts AND send our troops overseas a treat, the Girl Scouts are now offering the opportunity for you to purchase cookies to be shipped to our boys overseas. Once you purchase, the Girl Scouts will ship them to the troops in your name.

The sale ends next Monday, so if you need your Trefoil fix, email me at thequickanddirtydirty@gmail.com and I’ll try to hook you up!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to talk to a man girl about a horse cookie…
