This year, I decided to make a New Year’s resolution that would stick – and wasn’t selfish.  (Let’s be real, my diet-related resolutions NEVER last more than a few weeks…)  I needed a long-term goal to work towards + I wanted it to be something that would be meaningful to others.

And so, I decided to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure once again.

I participated in the 3-Day in 2006, and I look back on my six months of training, fundraising + walking for breast cancer research as one of my proudest accomplishments.  Over the course of 72 hours, I walked with wonderful people who had lost loved ones to this disease and walked in their memory; I bonded with brave survivors who had funny team names written across their pink shirts and hats; I heard incredible stories from warriors in the middle of their own fights against breast cancer.  I felt like I was part of the community + I was so honored to fundraise for such a worthy cause.

2006 Atlanta 3-Day - Day 2

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a 60-mile walk that raises money for breast cancer research and community programs.  Without a cure, one person will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States.  That’s a pretty startling statistic!  No one should have to face this disease, so in order to help create a future without breast cancer, I have decided to participate again in the Walk.

If you’ve ever seen a TV commercial or heard a radio ad for the 3-Day for the Cure, it’s incredibly evident how emotional + moving the Walk is over the three days.  If you’ve ever wanted to participate – please do!  Here’s the link to sign up:  GET INVOLVED WITH THE 3-DAY!  Meeting the fundraising goal + training for/ participating in the Walk is challenging – but it’s nothing compared to fighting breast cancer.  I’d love to have more folks to share this journey with in Atlanta, so please sign up today!  :)

You will receive $25 off your registration fee if you sign up before February 28!

2006 Atlanta 3-Day Closing Ceremony - Day 3

Please consider attending the Atlanta 3-Day Closing Ceremony on October 23rd.  I will update The Q+DD with location and timing details much closer to the Walk.  The Closing Ceremony is an incredibly memorable event that you will not want to miss!

Thank you for your support!  We CAN make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

I’m a little bit of a gum snob, as evidenced by past posts I’ve written about how good Trident Layers and Extra Dessert Delights are + my disdain for 5 Gum and pretty much everything associated w/ it.  Well now, I have a new favorite gum to share with you + even the Ice Man, himself, can get down with this one!

word to yo mother

Cute Cari keeps two different flavors of it in her purse at all times – and it’s not just for emergencies – this gum is the real deal.  (Love hanging out w/ Cari + preparing w/ her for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day for the Cure – more on that tomorrow, but the gum she carries around + generously shares completely sweetens the deal!)

cari's keepin' it fresh w/ ice breakers

Without further adieu, here’s the money:

Ice Breakers Ice Cubes - Peppermint

It’s AMAZING!!  (Totally deserving of all caps + two exclamations.)  Peppermint was the first flavor I tried and it’s super refreshing.

Ice Breakers Ice Cubes - Raspberry Sorbet

Cari also carries around the raspberry sorbet flavor in her Kate Spade, you know, just to mix things up.  It’s also awesome.

Compared to other gum, Ice Breakers Ice Cubes come in adorable mini square shapes, have colorful mint crystals + is really soft.  All of this may sound frivolous, but it’s not…because I say so…

I just really like this gum.  In fact, “I like it…a lot!”  :)

Make an Ice Breakers Ice Cubes gum run to CVS, Walgreens or your local drugstore today!  (Before Cari + I buy it out = addicts.)

Slick + I spent Saturday night celebrating our good friend Dana’s 30th birthday at Taverna Plaka on Cheshire Bridge.

Taverna Plaka

I hadn’t been to T. Plaka in maybe five years + I’d completely forgotten how much fun it is!  After the three hours we spent there, I’m convinced that it should be on everyone’s list for a bachelor/ bachelorette party, places to go when you have friends in town, or special (fun NOT romantic) occasion!

Dana had about 20 people out to celebrate with her + even before we could order drinks and get a bit crazy, one of the belly dancers brought her up on top of the table to get her Greek grove going!

happy birthday, dana!

The energy was great!  Then, all of the ladies were called up to participate in what to me seemed like a big Greek hora around the restaurant while everyone clapped + danced to traditional music.  Paper napkins were thrown everywhere with shouts of “OPA!”

OPA!

And, Ouzo shotsdon’t forget those bad boys!  :)

"shots, shots, shots, shots, shots, shots - 'erbody!"

By this time, we’d all worked up an appetite…  T. Plaka’s menu is pretty extensive, so my end of the table decided to do the $25 per person Mezedes: special chef menu for parties of two or more with all plates served family style.  It was the easiest choice + seemed like a good way to taste a bunch of dishes.

The first thing they brought out for the table was do-it-yourself hummus.  Slick worked on ours + it was super delish!  Fingers in the bowl + all…

Then, they brought out a cold spreads platter (eggplant, red pepper and cucumber spreads) and a Greek village salad.  All were sufficiently yummy, but we didn’t focus on them long because the flaming cheese (saganaki) was next!

The server lit the cheese at the table + set it down while it was still flaming a bit.  It was pretty exciting to watch when you were a few drinks in…  M. Reynolds, Slick + I really enjoyed the cheese, but Cute Cari and Jordana described it as a “cheese version of tofu” – way too bland for them.  That was fine, though, because it meant more for us!

Before we knew it, the rest of the meal was out on the table + we were overloaded with delicious plates of spanakopita, chicken and beef kabobs, gyro meat, rice pilaf, and moussaka

They were all really good, but we had to finish them fast because Dana was back on the table in the blink of an eye dancing + holding an adorable Sugar Sugar birthday cake!  Sugar Sugar cakes are the very best in town + Dana’s was even better (if that is even possible) as it was accompanied by some of T. Plaka’s seriously scrumptious baklava.

Shortly thereafter, T. Plaka turned into a full-on club bumping Usher + Kesha tunes.  I think we were all caught a bit off-guard when the traditional Greek music transitioned to Top 100, but we embraced it for approximately 15 minutes before we called it an Ouzo-laced evening.

T. Plaka is way more fun than I’d remembered it + I can’t wait to throw a party there or take friends who are in town.  With so many restaurants in Atlanta that seem like carbon copies of each other, T. Plaka is the perfect place to spice up your routine!

Opa + happy birthday, Dana!

Thanksgiving week and weekend was, predictably, FULL of food. (including unBELIEVEable red velvet and pumpkin spice cake balls by none other than Sugar Sugar, versions of the regular Turkey Day fare powered-up and fit for Top Chef, homemade apple pie, and some of the best Matzo Ball soup of my LIFE)  culminating with….a Saturday Night pizza-off.

Now, pizza is my all-time favorite food and both Greg and I have been known to be a teensy bit on the competitive side, so we were in it to win it, my friends.

Unfortunately and fortunately, all the pizzas were so delicious that we decided to call it a draw – but I just had to share our recipe with you!

Introducing Greg + Lauren’s (almost) Award-Winning Caramelized Onion, Bacon, and Fig Pizza!

Here’s what you need:
1 large Spanish onion
5 pieces of thick-cut bacon, cooked and cut into small pieces
Pizza dough (we were lucky enough to have fresh pizza dough made for us…but I’m sure the freezer kind will be a-ok)
12 dried mission figs, sans stems, cut into quarters or small pieces
3/4 cup crumbled Gorgonzola
A few handfuls of shredded mozzarella
Butter, olive oil, sugar, garlic, salt and pepper

Here’s what you do:
1.   Caramelize the onions. Now, I admit, my part of this pizza partnership was more conception while Greg’s was more execution – but I watched him from behind my red wine glass and it looked like all there was to it was slicing the onion, sautéing it in butter and olive oil and finishing it with a few teaspoons of sugar at the end, but please find exact instructions for how to caramelize onions by clicking HERE.
2.    Take the pizza dough and, on a highly floured surface – stretch, pull, and throw it around until its pizza-shaped.  (We went with square) Then transfer onto a lightly floured baking sheet or pizza round or whatever.
3.    Brush the dough with butter and chopped garlic and lightly cover with the mozzerella.
4.   Layer on the toppings – but be careful not to press on the dough.  We did onions first, then figs, then bacon then gorgonzola.
5.    Cook at 550 degrees until the crust is golden brown and the top is bubbling (7-8 minutes – watch it carefully!)

I may have been the only rookie in the kitchen, but frankly…I’m scrappy (and I had superchef Greg on my team – no big whoop).  Watch out, Jeff Varasano, we’re coming for you…

Enjoy!

Mrs. Wolkove and I have been the closest of friends ever since we were kids at Jewish sleep-away camp in Texas…

… and through middle/ high school + college – all while never living within the same city.  Recently, I was the maid of honor in her incredible wedding in Montreal.

Although she lives across the U.S. (in sunny Calif.), we have remained very close throughout the years + we make trips to see each other fairly frequently.  Over the past weekend, Mrs. Wolkove came to Atlanta for a visit.  As I mentioned yesterday, I really wanted to show her a good time.  She’d been once before, and we hit up most of the Poncey Highlands (The Local, MJQ, El Bar, Clermont Lounge + The Majestic Diner), the old Coca-Cola Museum, the Georgia Aquarium, Piedmont Park, Underground Atlanta + a few Buckhead restaurants + Midtown bars - but that was years ago, and “my” Atlanta has changed quite a bit.  So, I jam-packed our weekend with farmer’s markets, funky Atlanta eats, shopping + some exciting outdoor activities.

Our weekend itinerary is below.  Feel free to snatch some of these ideas + consult our Atlanta Bucket List page if you are planning for out-of-towners!

Success!!  It was such a fun, extended weekend, and Mrs. Wolkove had a b.l.a.s.t!  She was really impressed with what our city has to offer.  So, when your friends are in town for a visit, don’t be afraid to over-plan a bit.  There’s so much to see + do in the “capital of South.”  Take advantage of it!

(Your friends can rest when they go home…)

Captain Kurt, who you may remember from such Washington, DC posts as How to Gain 30 Lbs. in 3 Days + Spectacular, Spectacular, was in town over the weekend.  Kurt is an incredibly adventurous eater, so he was a perfect candidate to join us for Eat Squad #8 at the Atlanta Chinatown Food Court.

The CTFC is more than kind of amazing – located in the Atlanta Chinatown Mall on New Peachtree Road in Chamblee.  According to the mall’s website, there are 100,000 Chinese-Americans in Atlanta, and the mall is an area for them, and anyone else who appreciates Asian culture, to socialize, shop + dine.  Mr. Barocas had eaten at the CTFC a few times before, so he spearheaded our trip.

Please witness our culinary adventure:

(This was all handwritten!)

(Mr Barocas’ buddy @ Chong Qing Hot Pot – where the majority of our food came from.)

(Perusing food picture books to help us select our feast.)

(Slick serving himself some rice.)

The meal:

Okay, so I’m going to be real w/ y’all:  I’m definitely into food, but I’m not a culinary genius…  I am not really sure what everything was that we ate (with the exception of the pork dumplings + Cari’s chix fried rice, of course).  The boys did the ordering, which was fine by me, and we ate whatever was brought over to us.  Everything was delicious, and total cost for all that food for five people was about $10 per person!!

The CTFC is such an interesting cultural experience, and I would definitely recommend a visit to adventurous eaters + anyone who wants to have a really fun/ filling meal that won’t come close to breaking the bank.  Bring your appetites, though – even you serious eaters.  Consider yourselves warned…  :)

Oh, OK Cafe:  How do I love thee?  Let me count the ways…

5- Your kitchy facade + adorable decor makes me smile.

4 - Your 50′s-attired waitresses.  Just love them.

3 – Your wheat germ pancakes.  So healthy, so delicious!

2 - I think it’s really rad that you’re named after the cafe in To Kill a Mockingbird.

1 - You are such a great place to meet up at for a Sunday brunch!

In the six years I’ve lived in Atlanta, I’ve been to the OK Cafe many times – but only ever for brunch.  While I know that I need to go for lunch + dinner at some point, the OK Cafe has successfully satisfied Sunday morning cravings for loaded omelettes + tasty pancakes + an adorable atmosphere for years – and will for years to come!

You’re so much more than just OK, OK Cafe!  :)

I am getting SO excited for my trip next week! G and I are road-tripping up the Carolina coast culminating in Richmond, VA for my bestie Leslie’s wedding!

I can’t WAIT for this union

But before Richmond, we’ll be spending 5 glorious days in Charleston with 14 of our nearest and dearest!

Hopefully we will recreate this conga line

In preparation for my trip, I thought now would be a good time to try my hand at making cake balls (darling Cari is coming to my aide tomorrow…stay tuned) and tonight…Jaimi, Stephanie and I tackled (a couple of bottles of wine and…) OREO TRUFFLES!

You guys. They are DELICIOUS and SO SO EASY!

Here’s what you need:

1 package of Oreo cookies
1 block (8oz) cream cheese
2 (8oz) packages of Semi-Sweet Baking Chocolate, melted

Here’s what you do:

1.    Take out 9 Oreos

2.   Try really hard not to eat them

3.    Separate the remaining 36 Oreos and stick them in your food processor:

4.    Crush them into a fine powder

5.    Throw in your block of cream cheese and blend

6.    Roll into little balls (Note: it’s easier when your Oreo/cream cheese is colder, so I would occasionally stick it in the freezer for a moment or two while rolling and dipping)
7.    Dip into melted chocolate
8.    Crush up the reserved Oreos and sprinkle on top

9.    Voila!

Give ‘em a shot!  They are totally adorable and totally addictive! Yowza!

The best part?  I didn’t even have to turn on my oven!

(Hope Mickie D’s doesn’t lawyer me for borrowing their slogan for my lil’ post…  I’m v. nice + I love your $1 ice cream.  I do!)

So, y’all, work is busy for me right now – but I still have a lot to tell you.  Particularly about a few things I’ve been lovin’ lately…

1- Shorty’s Short Van.  Shorty’s – one of my favorite pizza joints in Atlanta - has a new marketing mobile.  Love!

Shorty's short van

2- The Life Is A Runway Blog.  The amazing Mrs. Jessica Liszt, shares her impeccible style with us daily in her new fashion blog.  I’ve been constantly reading it, and admittedly I’m not a biggest blog reader…  Check it out – you’ll love her stylish tidbits:  http://www.jlrunway.blogspot.com/

mrs. lizst, fashion blogger extraordinare

3- Giant Bears for Sale @ Costco.  I went to Costco for my first time ever (“Hi, my name is Lindsay, and I’m a Sam’s Club member) on Saturday and fell in love.  Just saying…

love at first sight

4- Little Kids in Jeggings…  Cari celebrated her big 3-0 over the weekend.  Happy birthday, CB!  We partied at the birthday girl’s diggs w/ a bouncy castle + all.  Please witness this awesomeness:

brilliant

My favorite part, however, was meeting her mini-fashionista niece who was sporting tiny tot jeggings.  The cutest!  Q+DD trivia: Our trend alert about “jeggings” is our second most viewed post next to the one about ”SHARK WEEK!”

so freaking adorable, i can't stand it.

5- My new Stella & Dot earrings.  Aren’t these gorgeous?  They are the Deco Drop earrings from Stella & Dot’s Fall/Winter collection.  Very glam for only $39.  BTW: My friend, Meagan, who just hosted a super-fun S&D trunk show at my place would be more than happy to be your rep: www.stelladot.com/meaganb  :)

stella & dot deco drop earrings

love their fall/winter collection...

6- Zooey Deschanel.  I just kind of want to be her.  I re-watched 500 Days of Summer over the weekend and fell in love with her all over again.  Plus, I love that she was in Elf  and rocks out in the very rad indie band, She & Him.

she & him

7- These shoes!  Going out to buy them this afternoon.  Thanks, DSW, for the nifty $10 off coupon I received in the mail yesterday and I fully plan to cash in today.  Just thanks.

you're MINE!

That’s about all for now…  :)

As previously mentioned, I bought Groupons for Slick + I to go to Medieval Times, and then successfully strong-armed a few friends into join us.  We went to the Atlanta castle on Saturday evening and IT. WAS. AWESOME!!  :)

Here’s the Q+DD:

evidently Medieval Times is INSIDE of the mall - not quite as sexy as anticipated, but we rolled with it.

the boys supported the blue knight b/c blue is for boys...

...and since there was not a hot pink knight, the ladies opted for the yellow one.

we drank massive Medieval beers (then promptly shattered the glasses in the back of my car afterwards by accident or because we are tough. you decide.)

mr. b and slick were still able to rock their faux-hawks even with their Medieval crowns on. we creatively renamed the hairdo: crown-hawk. you're welcome, Vidal Sassoon.

lindsay ate with her hands...

...and so did lauren. (surprisingly, the food was kind of really good. quote me and i'll come after you.)

the show was pretty cool. jousting is intense.

so intense, in fact, slick got a little Medieval-y stressed out.

we were a pretty rowdy group - yelling at/ for the knights, drinking enormous beers and throwing our crowns around...

MAN DOWN!

our serf, ron, was pretty rad. he filled us in on all the juicy Medieval gossip.

we got to meet the king (we = total VIPs)...

...and finished off the night with a Medieval DANCE PARTY. that's right.

Medieval Times is a seriously fun date.  We used the Groupon, but still I think that it’s pretty economical for food and a show at only $49.95 per person (regular price).  Currently, they are running a special for $34.95, which is even better.  If you register online, you can get a free feast (they offer a vegetarian feast, too) + tournament for your birthday!

P.S. On Saturday, someone in the crowd was there for his bachelor party!  We all got a kick out of that…

On Sunday, it was Eat Squad time again and Vietnamese food was next on our hit list.  Mr. B did some research and liked the Yelp reviews he found about Bamboo Grill & Hot Pot in Chamblee, so we all ventured back to Buford Highway once again for some ethnic cuisine.

Aside from Whole Foods-prepared Viet. spring rolls, I’d never eaten Vietnamese food before.  (It’s always interesting not having a benchmark for which to compare new foods or restaurants, but that’s kind of the point of Eat Squad, I guess.)

This ES session, we had the honor of food blogger FB joining us.  We all sat down at a large round table at the restaurant and perused the extensive menu.  I was pretty overwhelmed, so I asked Mr. B. – who has experience with Viet. food – to order for me.  On his and our friendly waitress’s recommendation, we decided to eat family style and order a number of tasty dishes, a few of which we had to prepare + cook ourselves.

Below are a few pictures of our meal:

the "create your own spring roll" spread

fish + meat for the spring rolls

waitress showing cari how to prepare the spring rolls

my spring roll didn't really cut it...

cold pot w/ fish, veggies + broken rice (my fav.)

waitress stirring the cold pot and explaining to us the history of broken rice - a famous Viet. peasant dish

i went back for thirds - it was delicious!

veggies to cook in hot pot

fish to cook in hot pot

beef to cook in hot pot

hot pot cooking on our table

mmmmmmmmmmm!

I really enjoyed this meal.  In preparation for my upcoming vacations, I am kinda watching my waistline (only kinda) and I didn’t feel guilty at all about what I ate.  To me, Vietnamese food is like a healthier version of Thai food.  I definitely want to get it again, but I’d like to consider trying some other Viet. restaurants around town.  For the Eat Squad members who had eaten Viet. before, they said that Bamboo was good – but not the best in town.  Whatever the case, I’m happy to know that I like Viet. food and I look forward to trying it again soon.

The next Eat Squad gathering will take us to Cafe Agora in Buckhead for some Mediterranean cuisineStay tuned…

You know the drill: I don’t cook. The best thing I make is reservations. I use my oven for storage. Yadda yadda yadda…

However, I recognize that there are times in which cooking is necessary and a smart girl always has a few tricks in her arsenal. For instance, last week was The Ginger’s birthday and and excellent excuse for my famous cupcakes!

Plus, making cupcakes is a RIOT:

Funfetti!

I’m hesitant to give away all my tricks of the trade, but doctoring up a cake mix is pretty darn simple. If I can do it, you can, too! (If you’re a super cook, you can just skip this post, because I’m going to write it r.e.a.l.l.y. simple for the culinarily challenged…like myself.)

Here’s what you need:

2 boxes yellow cake mix (I like Duncan Heins)
6 eggs
2 sticks (unsalted) butter
2 packages vanilla pudding mix
1 tub of milk chocolate frosting
1 tub of vanilla frosting
2c sour cream
Coarsely ground sea salt
Vanilla extract
Spatula
Muffin tins
Muffin cups
Hand-held mixer (I know, I couldn’t believe I had one, either!)

Suggested accoutrements:
Some type of round candy: I like the salted caramel balls by Choxie…found at Target…IF you can manage NOT to eat them all before you ice and decorate your cupcakes
Black and white sprinkles (separate)
Teeny tiny funnel

Ok, then it’s easy-squeezy. I do this in 2 batches.

1. Combine 1 box of cake mix, 1 stick of softened butter, 3 eggs, 1 package of pudding mix, 1c sour cream and a dash of vanilla extract, mix well and fill the muffin cups in your muffin tins about 3/4 full

(The box says it will make 24 cupcakes, but what they don’t mention that they will be weeny cupcakes. Fill ‘em fuller and each recipe will only make about 18 or so. Particularly if you, um, “taste” the batter. A lot. Don’t judge me.)

2. Bake according to the instructions on the box.

3. Repeat and let all cupcakes cool on cooking racks (I can’t believe I had these, either.) You’ll have about 32 nice, big cupcakes.

4. While the cupcakes are baking/cooling, spoon your chocolate and vanilla icing into two separate bowls. To each: add a tablespoon or so vanilla extract and a few grinds of sea salt. Make sure you taste along the way, so it doesn’t get too vanilla-y or, yuck, too salty. But ton’t be shy, either. The salt is perfect for cutting the supersweet frosting (Thanks to Cari of Sugar Sugar for the tip!)

5. Once the cupcakes have cooled, ice 1/2 with chocolate and 1/2 with vanilla. Then I decorate like this:

  • 6 chocolate frosting with white chocolate round candy on top
  • 6 chocolate frosting with white sprinkles JUST in the middle of the cupcake (use the funnel)
  • 6 vanilla frosting with chocolate round candy on top
  • 6 vanilla frosting with chocolate sprinkles on top

Then I arranged them in my double-decker cupcake caddy (also found at Target) and voilà!

BONUS: You’ll have about 8 extra cupcakes. Throw a couple of those bad boys in some Tupperware and a nice little note and BAM! Perfect “just because” gifty-gift for doormen, fabulous coworkers, neighbors, etc. Luckily I had some hot pink sprinkles on hand, perfect for Kindredly’s birthday last week!

I may not be a domestic goddess…
…but, as DK says, “fake it till you make it!”

xx, LK
