Costumes + Parties

If you are a frequent Q+DD reader, you’ll know that I love holidays – and pretty much any reason to celebrate.  I even like not-so-sexy holidays.  For instance, Passover got morphed last year into Lindsay + Lauren’s B.P.E. (Best Passover Ever).  It was 80’s-themed and all…

The B.P.E.

B.P.E.

the charoset was jussssst right...

the charoset was jussssst right

Valentine’s Day (candy + roses) definitely falls into my top five favorite holidays list, alongside St. Patty’s Day (green beer + socially-acceptable pinching), Halloween (costumes + candy…again), Thanksgiving (turduckens + football) and New Year’s Eve (champagne + overpriced parties).

Happy V-Day!

Happy V-Day!

Sadly, I do encounter quite a few people who are not that “into” V-Day.  Some people just don’t have the spirit.  I hear them say, “why should I be forced to tell my (insert: girlfriend/ fiance/ partner/ wife) that I love them more on this day than any other - yadda yadda yadda?”  To which I simply respond, “because Hallmark tells you to!  Hello!”  Call me brainwashed – whatever – but I’m totally buying what Hallmark is selling.  I love everything about this holiday!  Chalky conversation hearts, under-clothed babies with bows + arrows, oversized V-day cards, pristine red+ pink roses…I love it all.

Which brings me to my point: no matter if you’re a V-day lover or hater, here are a few ideas for the weekend if you have not already made plans:

A Love Supreme:  Nothing says, “I love you,” like sushi, well, that’s our philosophy at least.  Head to Genki Noodles and Sushiin Buckhead or The Prado for a low-key, romantic Valentine’s Day dinner featuring a special “Cupid Roll” and “Love You Long Time” flirty cocktail.  Detailed info below. (http://www.genkiatl.com/)

Valentine’s Day is for Suckas:  Boycott this Hallmark holiday and reclaim romance for the real world at P’cheen International Bistro & Pub!  Saturday, February 13 infuse a little humor into your night…sip on “Cupid Got Shot(s)” while you bust out your best Molly Ringwald moves during the teary eyed dance party courtesy of DJ Feri.  Since the kitchen is open until 1:00 a.m., you might even find a date that you can spoon-feed the “Broken Heart” dinner specials to. (http://www.pcheen.com/)

Tainted Love:  Give love a chance during Gold Room’s retro throwback “Tainted Love” party on Saturday, February 13th.  Enjoy a night of dancing as DJ Andre Perry spins favorites from the 70s, 80s and 90s.  Try the “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue” and “Chocolate Covered Raspberries” specialty cocktails.  Single guys and gals can try to get lucky in love by picking up a red wrist band at the front door as their official “single signal” for the night.  (http://www.goldroomatl.com/)

Shop To Your Heart’s Content:  If you’re still searching for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift, Limon Verde offers beautiful hand-made unique and affordable gifts for that special someone.  To sweeten the deal, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Red Cross.  And, the Shops Around Lenox have a bundle of sweet deals through Valentine’s Day. (http://www.limonverde.com/)

Valentine’s Day Supper Club:  Sun In My Bellyis hosting special Valentine’s Day dinners Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m.  Both evenings will have one seating featuring a four-course meal created by executive chef Allison Lueker, complimentary specialty cocktails and live music by Nicole Chillemi.  In addition, each party will receive a signature floral bouquet from Foxgloves + Ivy Floral Design Studio to take home. $50.00 per person. HAPPY VALENTINES DAY, EVERYONE!  And, stay warm – this is going to be a snowy one in Atlanta!  :)

Snuggie Pub Crawls. They’re everywhere these days.
snuggiepubcrawl2Sorry, Joanna and Ash, apparently we did NOT come up with that idea and if we did, we certainly didn’t execute quickly enough because you can barely walk down the street these days without hitting a wall of Snuggie-clad bar-hoppers.
snuggiepubcrawlgroupsnuggiepubcrawl1snuggiepubcrawlcheerNow, I guess if you’re going to wear a blanket to a bar, it definitely makes sense to wear one with sleeves.  You just can’t argue with that logic. I mean, how else could you shoot pool?
CIMG1359Give a high five?
snuggiehighfiveEven hold your cocktail?!
snuggiecocktailYou couldn’t, my friends.  You couldn’t.

Plus, if you order now, your Snuggie will come with a book light that can also double as a mini flashlight…which could come in handy in dimly lit pubs! CIMG1357I actually can’t believe bar crawling wasn’t Snuggie’s original purpose. Yep, Snuggie pub crawls are all the rage and last night?  I jumped right on that bandwagon.

I couldn’t just go with the standard edition blue.  Luckily, as you know, Snuggie is really branching out. Check out the latest from Milan:
snuggierunway I imagined myself a Project Runway contestant while fashioning my Snuggie dress… please witness my Snuggie couture:

That. Just. Happened.

That. Just. Happened.

In this chilly February weather, I was snug as a bug in a rug in my Snuggie.  I loved it.  Everyone at Twain’s loved it. In fact, I may work it in as a regular part of my wardrobe.   Otherwise, I might wonder: snuggietshirtHave a Snug-tastic day, everyone!

I am thisclose to partied OUT. I know, it’s shocking. I may have actually done it this weekend between Ormsby’s and Mood Lounge and of course, Party Preppy…
partypreppy…however, I always have a bit of party left in a reserve tank and I plan on using it this Wednesday at the American Red Cross event at East Andrews for Haiti relief.  haiti[1]

Here’s the Q+DD:

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 8:00pm
East Andrews Main Bar
56 East Andrews Dr.

Per my fabulous friend Dina at East Andrews:
“Join us at East Andrews for a special night for Haiti, benefiting the American Red Cross Metro Atlanta Chapter. DJ Dreams will be spinning featuring:

$2 Bud Light Wheat
$5 Mango Mojito
$2 Jello Shots

Receive a FREE drink with your $5 donation.

Let’s help raise funds for the American Red Cross to deliver relief to the Haitian people! We understand this relief effort is just the beginning to a long road to recovery.”

So go on, party for Haiti.

(Drink specials AND good karma?  I am so there.)

It’s that time again. I know I’ve referenced it before, but it’s time. It’s time for LK/EZ Birthday Bash 2010! (THIS SATURDAY! 01/30/10!)

The Q+DD on EZ/LK Birthday is this: I’ll spare you all the girly details of our friendship (for another EZ post, please click here), but basically we were introduced when we both were fresh out of college causing trouble living in Manhattan. We discovered many, many similarities, but the most relative to this story are: (1) our birthdays are less than 48 hours apart and (2) we both love theme parties. Sadly, we were only able to have one superawesome party in NYC before I flew south, but luckily, EZ joined me in 2006 to resume our theme party madness.

Since then there has been Masquerade (at Bazzaar 2007):

There were no pictures, really. But our masks were cu-u-ute

…is to be born Ms. Lindsay Roberts.

= Awesome.

= Awesome.

If you weren’t quite so lucky, please refer to this handy-dandy list of
Lindsay’s Top 5 Awesome Qualities and try to follow suit.

Incidentally, this magical occurrence happened 28 years ago this Sunday, 01/17/82

Incidentally, this magical occurrence happened 28 years ago this Sunday, 01/17/82

5. Excellent Taste in Everything.
Obviously, since we write this blog together, I think that she has phenomenal taste and if you’re a loyal reader, you are probably thinking “duh, that’s why I waste 5-10 minutes here daily.” But listen. I think it should be known that Linds has never recommended a restaurant, TV show, product, activity, book, friend, or date that I didn’t enjoy. Its uncanny. She just knows what’s up.

4. She’s a “Sticky” Friend.
She has camp friends, elementary school friends, high school friends, sorority friends, dinner club friends, old work friends, current work friends, friends she met doing random activities…and she is exceptionally good at connecting all of them. I think she has a real talent in mixing the perfect cocktail of people. A prime example is our f.a.b.u.l.o.u.s. dinner club.:dinnerclub3

Granted, she shares this particular credit with our fabulous friend Dana…but there is no denying that the dinner club girls are a special random assembly of perfection: dinnerclub

3. She’s Tall.talllindsay

(Ok, I know you can’t really do much about this if you aren’t. Believe me I have tried.) Ssssssssigh.

3(b). She knows Santa.
santa
2. Girl On-Call 24/7.
I know I can always count on Lindsay if I need a +1 at a superfun event or party. But more importantly, I know I can always count on Lindsay if I need some backup at a less-than-fabulous event, if I have an immediate need to discuss something at 2am on a school night, or if I need to call an emergency lunch meeting. She knows to pick up if I dial more than once, and isn’t annoyed if I have interrupted her dinner for an urgent toenail polish inquiry.

1. Total and Complete Enthusiasm for Absolutely Everything
Costume Parties. Theme Parties. Preparties, post parties, political parties. Concerts, birthdays, contests, volunteer activities, anniversaries, monster truck rallies, recipes, holidays, you name it…
bringing thepartymustachelindscookinganjwedaustinsunglassesfiringrangespiralhalloweenIf Lindsay has decided to become involved, she is in it to win it, my friends. Front of the pack, 110% committed, game face on. I love this quality in a person and she has it in spades! lindsaycook

In closing, I believe that the Q+DD on Linds can be summed up in one of her favorite quotes from the great philosopher, Barney Stinson:

“Whenever I feel sad, I just stop feeling sad and start being awesome. True story.”

Happy Birthday, Lindsay! I hope it’s the best year YET.

No?

No?

Well, you should. He’s fabulous. We met back in 2005 when I first moved to Atlanta while doing a show together and it’s been magic ever since! He is not only handsome (obvi) and insanely talented and funny and charming, but also the mastermind behind my last two spectacular birthday costumes!

Here’s the Q+DD:
“Odd Man Out Theater Company invites you on a Bawdy Romp through the most famous – and infamous – of the Bard’s most notable masterpieces!
Written by Timothy Gray, this latest comedy adds a touch of vaudeville and cabaret traditions, set amidst the lush Red Den cocktail lounge, upstairs at Danneman’s.

Our cast features the notable talents of Autumn Farley, Clark Harris, Christy Hutcherson, Will Johnston, Hollis Smith, Whitney Umstead, Holli Walker, Paul Wolski & Jackie Wyer

Late night naughtiness awaits! Doors open 9:30 pm; Showtime 10 pm… Friday & Saturdays… Adults Only… dress to impress… a whole new joint upstairs…

BYOB w/FULL MIXER BAR AVAILABLE… only 20 bucks… tell your friends… well, tell your cool friends…

And don’t miss FRIDAY, JANUARY 22! Special 11 PM SHOW! A portion of the proceeds benefits JOINING HEARTS! Come out and support a worthy cause!

Advance tickets for each performance are available now through each cast member and at the counter @Danneman’s Coffee! Get yours now!

don’t be afraid… it’s only Shakespeare – like you’ve NEVER seen it before…”

Listen. When you get right down to it, everyone loves Shakespeare. The best comedies, tragedies, and love stories are all in there. Plus, this looks ultra fun and Hollis is amazing and whoever wrote the description obviously loves excessive punctuation even more than L + I do….so obviously I’m totally inskis and I hope you are too!

It’s been 9 days since Halloween and I miss it already.

Now I have to wait another 356 for it to come around again. (No worries, I will NOT wait nearly that long to wear a costume in public: Fact.) But the nice folks at Spiral Entertainment were kind enough to give me a little hit of Halloween this morning: the Spiralween pictures came out and look who is in the very first picture that pops up:

Spiralween320

L+L!

Also out: The official costume contest nominees!

Now, as a Spiral Host (Thank you, thank you. I’ll sign autographs later…) one of the perks is that I get to help judge the costume contest and this is how my votes went:

1. 75/85 Connector Couple

Had to give it up for to the local creativity. Loved it.

Note: I would have voted for this group anyway, but it doesn’t hurt that one of these darling girls is local songstress (and my friend!) Joanna Duff!

Every year before Halloween, I carve a pumpkin.  I’m not very good at it.  In fact, I’m a terrible carver – but I always insist on doing it.  Personally, I prefer to go with the traditional droopy-eyed, snaggletoothed jack-o’-lantern…

hello, jack!

hello, jack!

…but Slick bought some fancy carving book, so we shall carve the Mona Lisa into our pumpkin this year.

hello, mona?

hello, mona?

Really, though, if we have to do something more advanced than my usual, I am going to push for one of these two winners:

pumpkin eating pumpkin

pumpkin eating pumpkin

puking pumpkin

puking pumpkin

(The second one is my favorite.)  My only hesitation about it is that one of the most fun parts about carving a pumpkin is roasting the seeds!

yum!!

yum!!

It’s sooooo simple, too!  Here’s all you need for a fun Halloween snack:

INGREDIENTS
2 cups of pumpkin seeds, rinsed and drained
2 tablespoons of olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons of salt

DIRECTIONS
Let pumpkin seeds dry on paper towels.  Toss cleaned pumpkin seeds with oil and salt.  Spread out on a cookie sheet.  Bake in a 250° oven for about one hour or until the pumpkin seeds are dry, stirring occasionally.  Tada!

If desired, season with one of the following:
garlic powder or garlic salt
seasoning salt
black pepper
salt free seasoning blend, such as Mrs. Dash brand
cayenne pepper
seasoning sal
Cajun seasoning blend
chili powder
Mexican style chili lime seasoning
Italian seasoning or other herbs
grated hard cheese such as Parmesan

Happy Halloween, y’all!

Each year somehow an exorbitant amount of Halloween candy finds its way from strategically placed bowls all over town…offices to shops to manicurists to dry cleaners…into my mouth (and subsequently onto my hips!)

Seemingly harmless “fun sized” Snickers or Mounds bars, tiny boxes of Milk Duds, miniature York Peppermint Patties or my personal favorite, itty bitty boxes of colorful gummy DOTS are easily underestimated. Rookie mistake.
dots_candyWell, in the SPIRIT of the season (pun intended) might I suggest a festive way to combat these sneaky little calories: Oakland Cemetery’s “Run Like Hell” 5K on 10/31/09! If you aren’t familiar with Oakland Cemetery, I suggest you check out L’s former post by clicking here.

Here’s the Q+DD on Run Like Hell: On Halloween morning, starting at 9am runners of all ages will run through hauntingly beautiful and historic Oakland Cemetery and neighboring Grant Park. The course will wind past magnificent monuments and stately mausoleums of Atlanta’s oldest burial site where such notables as Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones and Maynard Jackson are buried. Unique “cemetery themed” awards will be presented in multiple categories.

THE BEST PART: Costumes are encouraged! Y’all. You can RUN in COSTUME. And there is a CONTEST.

Click here for more information and to sign up.

BONUS: Not a runner? Have kids? At 10:00 there is also a 1 mile walk/run called “Run like Heck” for the kids/lazy/brunch cocktail set.

As motivation, I thought I would also include this handy-dandy list of the calorie content in some of the most popular little traps…I mean treats! Because, well, it’s better to be informed, yes?

The Horror!

The Horror!

Witness:

Nestle’s Crunch – Fun Size 1 bar=70 calories
Peanut M&M’s – Fun Pack 1 bag=40 calories
M&M’s – Fun Pack 1 bag= 90 calories
Snickers
– Fun Size 1 bar=80 calories
Milky Way – Fun Size 1 bar=75 calories
Kit Kat – Fun Size 2 bars=100 calories
Hershey Chocolate Bar – Fun Size 1 bar=90 calories
Reese’s Cup – 1 cup=80 calories
Butterfinger – Fun Size 1 bar= 100 calories
Twix – Fun Size 1 bar= 80 calories
York Peppermint Pattie – 1 pattie=70 calories
Twizzlers – 1 treat size pkg= 45 calories
Almond Joy – 1 snack size bar = 90 calories
Milk Duds – 1 treat size box = 40 calories
Candy Corn- 11 pieces = 70 calories
SweetTarts – 1 treat size pkg. = 50 calories
1 Tootsie Pop – 1 pop = 60 calories
1 Tootsie Roll – 1 small roll = 13 calories

Now, I’m not saying that a Fun Sized Snickers isn’t totally worth the 80 calories it’ll cost ya, I’m just saying they’re in there.

laurenshawnRegardless, Happy Halloween! It’s almost here!!!!!

xx, L

PS. Please do not forget about Spiralween. Top 5 reasons to go: 1. Lindsay and I will be there. 2. I am hosting the event AND get to help judge the costume contest. 3. It is awesome. 4. Lindsay and I will be there. 5. Because we said so. Click here for tickets.
