An overwhelming majority of my friends got married between 2008 – 2010 + are now starting their families.  I’m so very happy for them and have embraced the rapid switch from buying wedding shower gifts at Bloomingdale’s to purchasing baby shower gifts at B Braithwaite (where I happen to be the Foursquare mayor, thank you very much), AND visiting their respective cities to meet their adorable newborns instead of traveling to far away places for wild bachelorette parties.

Here’s me two weeks ago with 8-months-prego Anjali as we were celebrating her pregnancy in DC.  Check out our awesome traditional outfits:

She had two parties that weekend (one a religious Indian ceremony + the other a Western baby shower for friends).  Anj spent the weekend opening gifts and chatting with folks who can’t wait to meet her little bundle of joy arriving in late August.  I spent the weekend supporting her (SO excited to meet the baby!) + sipping on Captain Kurt’s custom adult beverage he created for me over the weekend entitled: “All My Friends Are Pregnant + I’m Getting Drunk.”  Witness:

Here’s what was in it: Bols Genever (about 2 ounces), lemon juice (about .75 an ounce), a splash of grenadine + two drops of cherry bitters.  Shaken and strained and topped with blood orange soda.  Sweet, sour + pink…just like my iPhone case.

Drinking these over the weekend was delightful.  Bring ONNNNN the babies, I say!!

Anyway, over the past few months I’ve thrown a handful of baby showers + attended a number of others.  While I am still really uncomfortable setting foot into Babies ‘R Us (OMG – that place is s.c.a.r.y), I can tell you what My Breast Friends is, I can recommend bella bands + maternity jeans, and I consider myself to be an expert on fun baby shower games.

Let’s take Anj’s shower for instance, because it was recent + she had a slew of fun games.  First was the Never Have I Ever College Fund Game that I thought was super cute.  All you need is a decorative piggy bank + shower goers who are willing to donate their wallet change.

Everyone goes around and says baby shower-related (+ appropriate) Never Have I Evers like “Never have I ever changed a baby’s diaper” or “Never have I ever given dirty looks to a crying baby on an airplane,” etc, and those who have done that walk up to the piggy bank and drop in wallet change to start the baby’s college fund.  Here’s Anj with her baby’s piggy bank:

Although it’s not actually a game, I thought this was a really sweet idea: Anj’s sister put out a baby’s bedtime book + pens for shower goers to flip through and write a note to the baby.  Such a thoughtful little keepsake for folks to work on over the course of the shower.

Another one of the baby shower games that I think is a big hit is Guess How Big Momma’s Belly IsWe purchased string from Michaels + passed it around to everyone with a pair of scissors.  Shower goers cut the string to the length that they thought was Anj’s belly circumference.  Then, everyone measured their strings around Anj + the shower goer who cut the string closest to the size of her belly won a prize.

We also had a station running for shower goers to personalize onesies for the baby.  We purchased paint pens + markers and iron-ons (we set up an iron and ironing board for those) from Michaels to encourage folks to be as creative as possible.

Shower goers ate, drank, chatted + made adorable onesies (in a variety of sizes) for the baby.

This one was mine.  :)

We hung them up with twine and clothespins in front of the area where Anj would later open her gifts.

This was another onesie I loved…

Finally, we did not play this game at Anj’s shower, but I have to admit that it’s my favorite.  I call this one: Identify the Poop!  To set it up, all you need is a variety of candy bars + diapers.  Open the diapers and inside of each one place a different candy bar.  Write a number outside of the diaper corresponding with the candy bar within it, i.e. Milky Ways in diaper #1, Twix in diaper #2, and so forth.  Microwave the candy bars until they are melted.

Have everyone gather around and pass out the candy bar-filled diapers + pens and paper.  Shower goers have to taste each one and try to identify which candy bar it contains.  Whomever is the most accurate gets a prize.

It’s a total blast + SO funny!  And, definitely not for the squeamish…

That’s all I’ve got for now.  There are several more babies on the way, though, so Aunt Lindsay may have more to share in months to come.  In the meantime, I’ll be sippin’ my pink martinis + jet-setting to meet new additions to my friend’s growing families…while tightly holding on to my B Braithwaite mayorship.

My little brother is a bit of a budding foodie.

michael pictured left (dragon eyes) w/ his adorable gfriend.

brother pictured left (dragon eyes...) w/ his adorable gfriend.

Michael lives in Oklahoma, which doesn’t exactly provide him with the most creative culinary scene, but he makes do.  He also watches quite a bit of the Food Network + Travel Channel and recently saw one of the two (can’t remember…) cover Spread: The Restaurant in San Diego.

Michael thought that this was totally up my alley (+ he was v. right), so he e-mailed me a link to Spread’s site the next day.  I’m not lying when I say that this place makes me want to pack up + move in with Ron Burgundy in sunny Californ-i-a!

Okay, so check it: Spread’s mission is to stimulate + challenge the culinary imagination of their diners by working with and serving only locally grown, organic ingredients.  They specialize in the rarest fruits, vegetables and edible flowers + strive to constantly create new and exciting menu items and tastes.  Sounds fun.

The restaurant does regular meals, private events, catering + offers signature seasonal couture spreads

Their sensational spreads are all listed online here: SPREAD ‘EM! + include descriptions, ingredients list, nutritional facts + all ship within three days of your order being placed.

Here are six that look pretty freaking awesome to me:

No. 30: White Chocolate Blueberry Peanut Spread
No. 32: Cinnamon & Silver Goji Berry Peanut Spread
No 55: Butterscotch Almond Spread
No. 73: White Chocolate Inflused w/ Pretzels Peanut Spread
No. 113: Chocolate Curry Peanut Spread
No. 137: Rose Salted Basil Peanut Spread

I think that this might even be something that catches Captain Kurt’s attention…

…or maybe not.

Spread’s spreads look so decadently delicious to me + I think they’d be a fantastic little surprise for a foodie friend!  Check ‘em out.

Slick + I had lunch with Captain Kurt at Empire State South on Monday while he was still in town from DC for NYE.  (You may recognize The Captain from such posts as How to Gain 30 Lbs. in 3 Days and Spectacular, Spectacular.)

captain kurt + me

Whenever I am a little light on blog material, The Captain is there to assist.  He has brought the majority of the Trend Alerts! to my attention, including my recent post about couture Teva stilettos.  Over lunch, I informed The Captain that I was running a bit low on interesting things to blog about since I’ve been out of town so much in December.  He assured me that he was on it!  The next day, I received an e-mail from him saying that although it wasn’t necessarily “newsworthy,” he was getting a kick out of the Women Laughing Alone w/ Salad stock photo compilation on The Hairpin.

Now, I bring it to you…  From the bottom of The Captain + my hearts, we hope you enjoy:

THIS is so awesome!

My two favorite comments on The Hairpin about these pictures are:

1 – “Those women aren’t laughing…they’re gasping for calorie-free air!!”

2 – “Take a seat b/c I am going to rock your world while I explain to you what Crystal Light is!”

Thanks, Captain Kurt.  Thanks.  :)

(Uh yes, you read that right…)

Knowing that I am a fan of the asinine + the outrageous, Captain Kurt + Smellis shot over e-mails this week informing me about two incredibly. inane. shoe trends.  Frankly, I’m appalled by both of them (for different reasons), but I do appreciate the creative thought behind their development.  Unfortunately, though, someone’s hamster fell off of the wheel…

(1) TEVA STILETTOS

It’s hard for me to believe that these even exist.  Made by Grey Ant + Teva, you can hike the runway in two colors: World’s Unite (black + white) and Natural (tan).  And, for the low-low price of $330, these construction work couture kicks can be YOURS!

(2) HEEL CONDOMS (www.theheelcondoms.com)

“Condom-like covers that let you play dress up with your shoes.  Fit any stiletto heel…”

I think the concept behind these is pretty cool, but I have a serious problem with the name.  SERIOUS.  In fact, it kills the whole trend for me.  Perez Hilton (CoCo Perez at least) is a fan, however.  Heel Condoms range from $20 – $30 each.

What, just WHAT, will we think of next?!  (I’m scared…)

Captain Kurt, who you may remember from such Washington, DC posts as How to Gain 30 Lbs. in 3 Days + Spectacular, Spectacular, was in town over the weekend.  Kurt is an incredibly adventurous eater, so he was a perfect candidate to join us for Eat Squad #8 at the Atlanta Chinatown Food Court.

The CTFC is more than kind of amazing – located in the Atlanta Chinatown Mall on New Peachtree Road in Chamblee.  According to the mall’s website, there are 100,000 Chinese-Americans in Atlanta, and the mall is an area for them, and anyone else who appreciates Asian culture, to socialize, shop + dine.  Mr. Barocas had eaten at the CTFC a few times before, so he spearheaded our trip.

Please witness our culinary adventure:

(This was all handwritten!)

(Mr Barocas’ buddy @ Chong Qing Hot Pot – where the majority of our food came from.)

(Perusing food picture books to help us select our feast.)

(Slick serving himself some rice.)

The meal:

Okay, so I’m going to be real w/ y’all:  I’m definitely into food, but I’m not a culinary genius…  I am not really sure what everything was that we ate (with the exception of the pork dumplings + Cari’s chix fried rice, of course).  The boys did the ordering, which was fine by me, and we ate whatever was brought over to us.  Everything was delicious, and total cost for all that food for five people was about $10 per person!!

The CTFC is such an interesting cultural experience, and I would definitely recommend a visit to adventurous eaters + anyone who wants to have a really fun/ filling meal that won’t come close to breaking the bank.  Bring your appetites, though – even you serious eaters.  Consider yourselves warned…  :)

My parent’s dog, Charley, turned 15 on Monday, which is pretty ancient in dog years.  105!  (I think…I don’t know.  Math is hard.)

what?? we're close...

Happy Birthday, Charley!  :)

Anyway, in honor of his big achievements (being old as heck + dealing with my parents on a day-to-day basis), I decided to dedicate this post to him.  So here it goes.  Charley – If you ever got lost, which I know you wouldn’t because you are supa-smart…

evidence of charley's supa-smartness

I promise that I’d make you one of these lost pet signs.  Oh yes, I’m that nice.

OR…

I could also do this one in color, if you’d prefer…

OR w/ gusto…

(Had to clean it up a bit for the kids…)

That last one is Captain Kurt’s all-time fav.  Ugh – my sides hurt.

Kurt sent those to me this morning right before a kind of important meeting, and I laughed so hard I had mascara running down my face ala LC on The Hills.  I had to use my award-winning high school acting skillz to keep a straight face for the following 45 minutes…

Enjoy, world.  You’re welcome.

I kinda dig zombies.  (Yeah, you read that correctly…)

Walking dead people?  Yes sir!  In fact, I can quote both of these classics:

Weird?  Whatever…  I don’t judge you for watching Miley Cyrus movies.  (Okay, I do.)

Anyway, there’s a point to all of this zombie nonsense.  Thanks to Kurt K., I heard about THIS awesome zombie-related opportunity:  http://alturl.com/x9go

AMC is filming The Walking Dead in downtown Atlanta and they need zombie extras!  You even get to attend zombie school!  So. freaking. cool.  If you are free in June to participate – DO IT.  Check out the deets in the link above!

I love this city.

Hang out with the Kastorfs.  It’s as simple as that…

the kastorfs

In an attempt to come to terms with my denial about their recent move from Atlanta, Slick + I visited Kurt + Anjali in the District over the weekend.  When we arrived on Friday evening, we had dinner with them and Slick’s twin brother, Smooth, who lives in the city + co. at Zaytinya

zaytinya

Zaytinya (http://www.zaytinya.com/) is a Mediterranean restaurant in Chinatown that is star chef Jose Andres’ culinary playground.  Andres is a James Beard Award winner, defeated Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America and appeared as a guest judge on Top Chef.  He is often credited for bringing the small plates concept to America.  Needless to say, I was very excited to eat at Zaytinya.  And, it was even better than expected – I strongly recommend this restaurant.

puffed pita bread @ zaytinya - i ate a TON

We had lunch the next day at Ben’s Chili Bowl (http://www.benschilibowl.com).  Ever since Obama dined there a few days before the Inaguration, I’ve been interested in trying the famous chili dogs at this historic restaurant.

We ate absolutely wondrous things – chili dogs, chili cheese fries, etc – and we didn’t think twice about it.   :)

Ben’s Chili Bowl was amazing.  I love its U Street location – not too far away from one of my favorite places to eat at in DC – Marvin (Marvin Gaye’s restaurant).

More on Marvin’s here: http://www.marvindc.com/.

Kurt + Anj + Slick cooked dinner on Saturday night.  Obviously, I’m big on going out for meals (research for the blog…), but the way these three cooked – I’d be happy eating at home from here on out!

food network cameras really should have been there...

Everything was homemade from scratch.  So impressive!!

Caprese Salad garnished w/ Doritos (Slick’s touch):

Vermont Farmhouse Cheddar Cheese Straws:

Peach Gnocchi in a Champagne and Shallot Sauce:

(Brace yourself for this one) Maple Mascarpone Cheesecake served with Pistachio Ice Cream, Cranberries stewed in Raspberry Ginger Beer, Orange Ginger Reduction, Maple Syrup and garnished with a Walnut Tuille:

masterpiece

I ate sooooooo much, I couldn’t breathe after the meal.  Seriously.  That didn’t stop me, though, from finishing about three bottles of wine w/ Anj over the course of the night…  :)

We ventured out to Co Co. Sala (http://www.cocosala.com/) for brunch on Sunday.  A colleague in DC sang praises about this restaurant after she went for dinner one evening – and ever since has been telling me that I absolutely have to go there when I’m in town.

barely standing...but ready to eat!

The menu is based around chocolate and the food is creative, well-paired and incredibly artful.  Although we were all pretty hungover from the prior evening, we thought brunch was delicious and satisfying.  I loved the restaurant’s plush decor and appreciated how well thought out each knife, fork, dish and glass was – everything was very detailed.

beautiful entree @ co co. sala

decadent desserts @ co co. sala

We schmoozed with Co Co. Sala’s general manager after our meal and he told us that the restaurant has a pretty lively dessert + drinks scene – very loungy with house music…  Personally, “house music” wasn’t the greatest selling point for me, but I would definitely go back to Co Co. Sala when I am in DC again to try more of their delicious desserts and see what the evening holds there.  We left the restaurant full + with a parting gift from the GM: CHOCOLATE COVERED BACON!

it wasn't around for long...

Matchbox Vintage Pizza Bistro (http://www.matchboxdc.com/) was the last restaurant I wanted to check off of my list this trip.

get it? get it?!

Anj + Slick + I grabbed an early dinner there: the 3.6.9. mini-burgers w/ gouda + onion straws and one of their signature pizzas cooked in a wood-fired masonry oven.  Although I thought the pizza was fair at best, Matchbox’s onion straws were enough to bring me back to the Chinatown restaurant as soon as I am in DC again.  I honestly don’t have any other way to accurately describe them than they were just, well, AWESOME!

matchbox's 3.6.9. mini-burgers w/ onion straws

We ate a lot over the three day trip.  But, don’t worry about our health – we did some walking.  In fact, we spent Saturday @ the Department of Justice:

i found a familiar flag!

slick gave an important speech

We saw Julia Child’s Kitchen @ the National Museum of American History:

amen!

julia's copper pots

And, we viewed the Hope Diamond + the extensive Mineral Exhibit @ the National Museum of Natural History:

the hope diamond in all its glory

want. those.

Although the trip went by in a blur, I’ll be holding onto the memories we made (ate?) for the next few weeks in my waistline.  Oh well, I enjoyed every bite – and it’s not swimsuit season quite yet…

miss you guys already!!

Thanks, Anj + Kurt for such a super fun + incredibly delicious trip!

Last weekend, I had the great honor of being a bridesmaid in my dear friends, Kurt + Anjali’sHindu/ Jewish wedding in DC.  It. was. spectacular.  The weekend was an absolute whirlwind of colorful saris, delicious Indian food, beautiful ceremonies and constant celebration.  Honestly, it’s taken me until now to process it all.  Anjali was the most divine bride and Kurt was pretty darn handsome, too.  They looked so happy all weekend and I had total blast with them and their amazing friends and family from all over the world.  The bride + groom:

Don’t they look so regal?!  Gorgeous.

On Thursday, we attended Anjali’s henna party.  My henna has only faded a little bit over the past week.  It doesn’t quite match my Halloween costume, but whatev.  This is probably as close as I will ever come to a tattoo - so I am enjoying rocking it while I can!

Friday held two Hindu ceremonies: Grah Shanti and Mosalu

Although it was a little difficult to closely follow what was happening at all times, Friday was an incredibly interesting and beautiful day to witness.

On Friday evening, we had a rehearsal for the Jewish wedding and a rehearsal dinner at a delicious Mediterranean restaurant on U Street called Tabaq Bistro: http://www.tabaqdc.com/(I could hardly believe that I was still standing by this point.)  But, it wasn’t over yet!!  Early Saturday morning, we arrived at Anjali’s house and started getting ready for the Hindu Ceremony at Mellon Auditorium: http://www.mellonauditorium.com/.  Mellon is one of the most beautiful venues I’ve ever seen.  I wish we had someting like it in Atlanta.
