Wanted to give y’all a little update on my seriously devastating Nanowax situation

Remember?

pretty princess locks

+

discontinued wonder-product

=

total + complete hair tragedy

I went to Mint Salon yesterday to fill in Doug, my stylist BFF, on some scoop + get my bangs trimmed, and walked out  all cleaned up + gossip-free with THIS bad boy:

Schwarzkopf Osis Marsh Mellow Molding Paste

It’s supposed to replace my beloved Nanowax (we’ll see about that…), but heck – I don’t even really care what it does to my hair, it looks so cool perched on my black granite bathroom counter – I can hardly stand it!  Plus, I’ll buy almost anything Doug tells me to…

I’m a total sucker for packaging.  I can’t help it.  Convincing me to buy something in pretty packaging is about as easy as John Mayer after three whisky sours.  Which, I will admit, was actually at least half of the reason I picked up a kickin’ pair of Betsey Johnson pumps last week.  I just really loved the neon pink shoebox.

betsey + i love pink

Don’t judge.  Seriously, don’t.  :)

For years - under the watchful eyes of my beloved hairstylist, Doug - I’ve been using THIS:

To achieve THIS:

But when I was running low on Nanowax on Saturday and wanted to grab another bottle after my Brazilian blowout @ Mint Salon in Midtown, they were OUT!  (Gasp!)  I asked Doug when they’d get more in, and he gently broke the news to me that Pureology stopped making it.  ERRRRRRRR…Now, hold that phone!!  WHAT?  They stopped making it?  It’s like Kleenex no longer making tissues, like Willy’s no longer making burritos, like Nickelback no longer making insanely bad music, like the Michelin Man no longer making marshmallows!  (Is that what he makes?)

Anyway, I flat out refused to believe it and instead ran like a mad woman drove to ULTA as fast as I could only to see THIS:

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Say it isn’t so!!  Pureology’s Nanowax has been an important hair staple for me for YEARS…why now would they stop making their best product?!  It’s like my Abercrombie + Fitch Woods situation all over again, but at least 32x worse.  I don’t know what to do.  I actually bought hairspray yesterday, and can’t stand it.  My hair, Brazilian blowout and all, is having a pretty serious identity crisis.  The blowout makes it look gorgeous, of course, but it’s felt emotionally flat and deflated for days now.  :(

SOMEONE, ANYONE this is my plea: PLEASE contact me ASAP if you see Pureology’s Nanowax lying around anywhere.  The situation is getting more and more desperate by the hour…

not a laughing matter.

Side Note: Doug DID talk me into buying the sulfate-free Prive Shampoo + Conditioner to prolong my Brazilian blowout, and they’ve been really wonderful!

love that they come in a spray bottle so that they don't spill out when i knock them over in the shower or in my luggage

Also, Doug has been using THIS on my hair recently and I’ve loved it!

Prive's Concept Vert Volumizing Froth

Although it hasn’t been released to the mass market quite yet, people are already obsessed with Prive’s Volumizing Froth, and it’s recently been written up in Vanity Fair: http://alturl.com/7t68p.

While my love for + trust in Nanowax will never completely fade (I’m pretty sure that I’ll be able to find at least one more bottle on the black market w/ all those pirated movies, and kidneys and whatnot), I have confidence in Prive that they will be able to come up with something at least similar to it that I can start to cozy up to…

Update: Today I went back for round 2 of the OPI Axxium “soak-off” gel nail polish...or “the chip-free manicure” as I’ve heard it called lately.

You may remember, my main complaint the last time was that I got sick of my color, so this time I played it safe with a straight-up French manicure. Usually when I go French I prefer a “white on white” look – Waltz or Marshmallow for the base and the white tip like this…

…but since there’s not currently a comparable color in the Axxium collection just yet, I chose Bubble Bath/Hawaiian Orchid for my base…which still comes out pretty clear, witness:

I’m pretty happy though – it’s just a nice, classic mani, and you can never go wrong with classic, I think.  I’ll keep you posted with my results.  I learned today that you can paint another color on top, and since the gel polish is not affected by normal polish remover, you can remove the top color without damage to your Axxium manicure, so I’m thinking it may be worth it to have a neutral shade on at all times and paint them for special occasions!  Just a thought…

xx, L

PS I went on Stefani’s reccomendation to Eminence Nail and Spa above Ulta in the Buckhead loop.  Have you guys been there? That place is HUGE!

Like dear ol’ Chris, I have been braving a few New Worlds of Beauty as of late and I’d like to share my findings with you!

As you might recall, I am a Keratin BelieverPlease witness my previous post here.   A wise woman named Mara once said to me after her own treatment, “Now I have more time to focus on world peace because I don’t have to wonder whether or not it’s going to be a good hair day.  They are ALL good hair days.”

It’s the truth – the treatment is amazing. But the three days you spend as a Gremlin while this stuff works on your hair? Torture. So when Lindsay informed me that her salon, Mint, was offering a Keratin treatment which required a reduced amount of time for the product to set in, you better believe I was all about it.  I figured, any second I could shave off that process would be a vast improvement!

I was outrageously and pleasantly suprised when I called in and discovered they have also very recently started to offer the Brazilian Blowout, which is 100% complete when you walk out of the salon, no downtime!  AMAZING. It took about 3 hours, and the process was similar: wash, apply product, blow out, bake in strand by strand with a flat iron

Mary Joyce at Mint Salon working her magic

and the result is EXACTLY the same. I recommend 100%.  I’ll let you know in a month or two if it lasts as long as the Keratin, but for right now at 2 weeks out, I am THRILLED.  Oh, but please note: you must stay away from Sodium Chloride products (as you do with the Keratin) but you must also stay away from Sulfide products as well.  Mary, who performed my treatment at Mint, recommended Prive Concept Vert for my shampoo and conditioner:

You may remember how obsessed I am with Prive as a line, but this stuff takes the cake.  It’s 3 liters of product jammed into this little bottle.  Yowza!  The tiniest bit of this product, mixed with a little water, expands to an entire handful and definitely more than enough for one use. Plus, it smells SPECTACULAR.

Call Mary Joyce at Mint Salon for an appointment 404.724.9669.  Tell her the Q+DD sent ya!

  • OPI Axxium soak-off gel nail polish

I didn’t think I could do this.  I am a commitment-averse person.  I can barely decide on a pair of shoes for an evening, let alone a nail polish color for 3 weeks, but I finally bit the bullet and tried OPI’s new gel colors.

Not to be confused with Gel Nails or Acrylics, this gel is painted on like a polish, but dries under the UV light to a smooth, hard finish like the aformentioned products, but with no damage to your actual nail!

A few things to note: once the polish is applied, it must be soaked off like acrylics or gel nails.

Also, the colors are MUCH lighter than they appear. If you are choosing a neutral shade like Bubble Bath, it will dry almost clear.

Now, since I am not and will never be a naked nail girl, AND since i was in an 80’s kind of mood when I was doing this, I went with HOT pink. I had to have them soaked off early because I could no longer stand the color, but I could have easily gone another week.  Check it:

After 2 weeks!

If you think gel color may be for you, there are several salons offering this in town including Nail and Toe Spa in Buckhead, Top Nail in Toco Hills, and Hammond Nails in Sandy Springs.

Finally, the last beauty product I need to share with you is…

From the creators of the Sonicare toothbrush, this little hand-held wonder ensures that my mug gets a thorough 1-minute cleaning at least once a day!

It’s completely waterproof, so if you want to use it in the shower that is a-ok and the charge lasts a REALLY long time! My mom brought it in as a gift when she came to visit, and I absolutely LOVE it.  I can definitely tell a difference in my skin and it makes my nightly routine SO much easier.  I use it with my glycolic cleanser from my dermy and plain ol’ Cetaphil…the Mia works great with both!

Ok, that’s all I’ve got for now.  I’ll continue to look into the open sea of beauty possibilities and report back.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

You know my heart belongs to Atlanta and ever since I traded the Big Apple for Georgia Peaches in July of ‘05, I’ve never looked back.

However, that didn’t stop me from having the TIME OF MY LIFE this weekend celebrating Randi’s BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday, Randela!

If you happen to be making a trip to NYC anytime soon, let me point out a few highlights from my trip:

1.    Soul Cycle – It’s like a dance club and a spin class all rolled into one.  My girls have been RAVING about it forever and now I know why!  It’s an AMAZING workout and we had a BLAST.  If you have the opportunity to try it out, I recommend it 100%.  3 NYC locations: Upper East, Upper West, and Tribeca (even one in the Hamptons!) Visit Soul Cycle for more information and be sure to reserve a bike well ahead of time, there wasn’t a seat to be had!

2.   Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa – Jess and I had massages at the Flagship 5th Avenue Red Door Spa

between 54th and 55th

…complete with complimentary makeup touch ups by Monique…a Sophia Loren lookalike who has been working at the spa since…well…suffice it to say she’s been there a long time and has done a TON of makeup. So when Monique recommended the Flawless Finish Mousse Makeup, who were we to refuse?  SO glad we took her advice, it’s perfect for summer. The makeup comes out light and airy and it doesn’t sit on your skin like most foundations will in hot humid weather.  LOVE.

3.    Blow-Outs at Salon Nouvelle – I hesitate to tell you because I think this is the city’s best kept secret. Amazing hair for a mere $30 at this discreet little salon on 1st Avenue at 61st street.  (212) 813-0736 for an appointment.

(Another option: if you’re closer to Murray Hill…I used to be a blow-out regular at Monhair on 3rd Avenue between 36th and 37th.  I heard today my girl is still there!  Ask for Lolita and tell her Lorena sent you! (212) 447-7744 for an appointment)

4.    Dinner at Lure FishbarIt was love at first bite. Lure is the cutest little seafood restaurant located directly underneath the SoHo Prada store at Mercer and Prince. I chose the miso-glazed salmon over crispy soba noodles and it was to DIE for.  I was able to steal bites of the girls seafood platters, scallops, and various other fish dishes – everything was excellent.  Plus, inside is cute and swank all at the same time…perfect place for our perfect dinner!

5.    Drinks at Betel in the West VillageLOVED Betel.  This Asian-Fusion resto was a really fun location for post-dinner drinks.   It’s very nondescript (in fact, you could easily miss it!) and understated and with ample bar seating for a small-ish joint, it was the perfect place to accommodate the flood of people who showed up to celebrate Randi’s birth!  The drinks were DELICIOUS – we especially liked the Tart ‘n Tasty – made with lychee juice and ginger (You know how I usually shy away from anything with a kitchy name…but this drink was fantastic and not too sweet!)

(The cutie in the middle is Randy's Mister!)

6.    Brunch at The Smith – catty-corner from my old East Village Karaoke standby Nevada Smith’sThe Smith really hit the spot for brunch. Mostly, I just loved hanging with 4 of my favorite people over egg white mushroom and fontina omelets and complimentary bloody marys!

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to see my girls and the wonderful guys they love…

but I have to say – of all the cute couples I know in The City, my favorite pair is undoubtedly these two:

…Don’t worry, A+E…Aunt LK will be back soon!

DK and I had the BEST weekend together! Here’s a quick recap in pix…in case you wanted to recreate. FIRST…you need a mom as cool as mine.

Hanging out with her "granddogger"

Then you do the following:

1. Dinner at the bar at 4th and Swift

Amazingness.

We both acknowledge that a bottle of red wine, a cheese plate, and an order of ceviche would not qualify as dinner when men are present…which is why we enjoyed every. last. bite.

2. IMAX and Martinis at the Fernbank

It was “Salsa Night.”

Honestly, it was a little loud for our tastes, I much prefer the light jazz.  However, it was fun to see all the dancing and all the outfits while we sipped on our martinis.  (Love that DK and I drink exactly the same: Vodka Martini.  Up. Olives. Fin.) Plus, after a martini or two…I find IMAX movies hilarious. (Friday was no different. Cirque was a riot.)

3. Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market

As I suspected, DK LOVED it. All the fresh produce, local wares, and homemade treats were RIGHT up her ally.  We split a mint lemonade, had breakfast pizza, and DK had a Cucumber Basil Fresco Pop.  It was great! Bonus: we ran into a zillion friends (and lots of people who came per the Q+DD reccomendationwhich obviously made my day...including this young man and his parents, whom I adore:

lil' Flounder. Son of Flounder and Jen Flounder

DK made out like a bandit (and consequently, so did I!) check out her loot:

Emily G's Jam of Love, classic and chipolte bacon, I heart bacon shirt for Brian, and an assortment of cheeses from Calyroad Creamery

4. Shopping. Major shopping happened on Saturday afternoon. Mostly my bed got a makeover.  Witness:

IN LOVE with my new aqua coverlet, my watercolor duvet cover, and quilted euro shams.  Also exciting: I scored a Calvin Klein Khaki Collection down duvet for $80 at Macy’s.  (I shopped 3 other places, this was the cheapest BY FAR.)  Macy’s is having a crazy linen sale. I replaced every pillow on my bed. Check it. Trust.

5. Lovely lunch at Prime. I always forget about this resto because it’s in the mall.  But DK loved her sushi and I had a great lump crab meat and bibb lettuce salad.  Deeeeeelish.

6. Drinks + Dinner at Holeman + Finch: in that order.  We met my friend Victoria and her husband Hakim, who were visiting from Chicago…because they are MOVING HERE! WOOT!

Reunited...and it feeeeels so good!

It didn’t seem that crowded, but we definitely got there at 8:30 and weren’t seated until our burger (yes.  singular.  We scored the last one. Thanks, Reagan!)  was  served.  (10:30ish?) But we had a great time at the bar. DK LOVED the Aviation and I enjoyed the Shrub (blackberry + tequila on Saturday night).  We demolished a pretty amazing charcuterie plate, I rediscovered the pancetta carbonara, and we tried 2 things that I LOVE that somehow I have never ordered at H+F: the steak tartare and the mussels.  Both were PHENOM. Special thanks to Hakim for showing me how to eat mussels with other mussels.  (ie sans tiny fork.I’m so euro now!

Sidebar: Everyone in the WORLD was at Holeman on Saturday night.  Including Eli Kirshstein (from Top Chef.  Yes, we are both obsessed.) and Lauren…my neighbor from Birmingham!

+ about 934829235 other people! fun!

7. Brunch at Craftbar with La + Shecky

The company alone would have made this brunch phenomenal. However, there was nothing to be desired.  At the end of the day, I think Craftbar is so gorgeous and our food was incredible.  We started with biscuits and fresh blackberry jam

I had shortribs and baked eggs, La and Shecks had poached eggs and steak, and DK (true to form) ordered exactly what I wanted: bacon gravy and biscuits.  Everything was perfect: the coffee, the food, the service.  It was a lovely brunch.
Craftbar Atlanta on Urbanspoon

8. More shopping. No pictures.  I was too busy taking full advantage of my last few precious hours with DK.  Sorry not sorry.

LOVED having my mom in town. I’m a lucky girl to have my own personal stylist, decorator, role model, and best friend all rolled up into one woman!  Thanks for coming to play!

and thanks for showing me how people sharpened their lipliner in the olden days!

Bonus: Today is my parents’ anniversary!  Happy, happy anniversary to the cutest couple I know!

I love you!

xx, L

I have a new favorite product:

"Revelotion" by DuWop

It. Is. LOVE.

I love it so much I almost didn’t tell you about it. (Shame!) but then I realized I love it so much I HAD to tell you about it!

It’s a moisturizer, a SPF 15 lotion, and bronzing body makeup all in the same magical tube. It goes on totally sheer and gorgeous and you can buy it in the shade closest to your skin color.  Perfect over your St. Tropez (or, if you must, real tan) but I swear it gives you enough color to use it in lieu of your faux tan! Amazing!

Trust me, you will not regret dashing out to Sephora and get a tube today or buying it online here ($28) to get that glow!

You. Are. WELCOME. (seriously.)

While making an urgent CVS run to replace my trusty tube of Aquaphor

(my trusty tube of Aquaphor)

…I got distracted in the Nivea section of the lotion aisle.  They just have such great products, and I’m a total sucker for their packaging.

Anyway, I happened to notice that they’ve recently dabbled into lip care and had a little promotion running for their “A Kiss of Moisture” Essential Lip Care balm.  Promotional advertising usually works pretty well on me, so naturally I decided that I’d give it a shot.

now featured as an essential item in my purse

Adios, Aquaphor!

While I stood by Aquaphor for the last few years because it was so much more moisturizing than any other lip balm I’d ever used, I have to admit that it could get pretty messy (heaven forbid the cap comes off while it’s crammed inside your purse with 1,800 other items) and I never really cared for how slimy it felt upon application.  Nivea’s lip balm comes out of the tube like lipstick but fatter.  It’s not messy at all, and it’s incredibly moisturizing – doesn’t wear off as easily/ quickly as Aquaphor.  I think that they are both good products, but I have a strong preference for Nivea now.

Pick it up at your local CVS - you’ll see what I mean.  I don’t go anywhere without it.  :)

Refresher:

Hair I want:

Hair I got:
Luckily, between my Keratin treatment, hairstylist Tanya, round brush, blow dryer, and flat iron I feel like I’ve FINALLY got it under control.  However, I have to tell you, my hair has been holding up EXCEPTIONALLY well this summer, despite the Georgia humidity and I have every reason to believe my new miracle product is in play:

Oribe anti-humidity spray

The Q+DD is this: this anti-humidity spray is a product in celebrity hairstylist Oribe Canales’s line.  It promises to “shield hair from frizz on the sultriest of days (and nights), protecting sleek blowouts and perfect curls alike.”   Plus, Oribe’s salon is in Miami…and those people know humidity. SOLD.

Bonus: It smells DIVINE.  All of Oribe’s products are lightly scented with French-commissioned perfumes – and this one is AMAZING.

Pick up a bottle at Michele Coulter Salon in Buckhead and TAME THAT MANE…even in humidity you could cut with a knife!

May is always a busy month for me – workwise + socially.  (August is even worse, but more on that later…)

When I get home some evenings, it’s after 11:00 p.m. and I’m torn between going straight to bed in hopes of stealing some beauty zzzzzzzzz’s before my groundhog-day-of-a-month starts again at 7:00 a.m. sharp and staying up to do laundry, return calls + clear off some of my TiVo…  I can’t even BEGIN to tell you how far behind I am on the Vampire Diaries

If I’m feeling too wired to go to bed, I grab a cup of my beloved SleepyTime tea that I brag-logged about a few weeks ago + turn on this amazing device at full blast:

Behold the HoMedics Sound SPA Relaxation Sound Machine from Target.  This baby costs you only a mere $24.99, but really pays off in the sleep department.  Its settings are: Ocean (I listen to it every night), Summer Night, Rain (sounds like white noise), Rain Forest (the birds kind of freak me out) and Heartbeat (don’t. do. ittttt.).  I swear by the Ocean setting – and even Slick has jumped on the sound machine bandwagon.  He’s WAY worse than me in the winding down department after a long day of work/ play…

We are happily training ourselves to go to bed ala Pavlov’s Dog’s Classic Conditioning, and it’s working.   (Don’t worry…we don’t drool when a bell rings, only training ourselves to sleep better…) Benadryl may work for some, but this sound machine doesn’t leave you with a hangover in the mornings.  I love it and it’s certainly helping me to sleep better.  Check it out!

P.S. Here are my two favorite pictures from Camp Twin Lakes’ Camp Dance this weekend @ the Atlanta Zoo(Couldn’t resist…)

What a killer party!  Can’t wait until next year to do it all over again!

xx, L

Ok, I got some new stuff and I just need to share:

Prive Shining Weightless Amplifier

The Q+DD: Distributes like a foam, goes on kind of like a gel.  Creates amazing volume and gives gorgeous shine without making my hair stiff.  Plus, it smells SO GOOD I quite literally want to taste it.  But don’t worry, I don’t.

Mac

Everything old is new again! My old love affair with Mac makeup has resurfaced in a BIG way. Sorry, Trish, but my old boyfriend Mac is slowly occupying more and more of the surface space in my bathroom…

Like Linds, I also recently made the successful switch to mineral makeup and have absolutely loved it:

Mineralize SPF 15 Foundation

Mineralize Skin Finish Powder

And started using a primer:

And last week I rounded off my collection with a tinted moisturizer for those days when I don’t need as much coverage:

Studio Moisture Tint SPF 15

LOVE. Light, smooth, flawless.

Next, after my Almond Oil purchase, I found myself wandering back into L’Occitane for their famous shea butter hand crème:
There is a reason this stuff is a #1 seller.  It really does the trick for dry hands and cuticles.  My fabulous friend Gretchen swears by it and as a former flight attendant, she knows her stuff when it comes to moisturizers of all kinds.  Plus, she is gorg. Witness:

Finally, while I was going to town at L’Occitane, I figured, why not go all outSo I also purchased: Shea Butter Liquid Soap with Verbena. Loves it.

Just one thing, though: is it weird that I think “Verbena” smells a lot like “Froot Loop?” And that I like that?

Just wondering…

xx, L
