Ok, I had to come home and bust out a quick blog post because I did some local shopping this morning and I’m so happy with my spoils!

Stop 1: Peachtree Road Farmers’ Market

Seth (Seth says!) and I busted it over before the crowd got crazy and I scored some delicious Tuscan kale (which I plan to cook tomorrow night in a recipe he taught me), along with my farmers’ market favorites: Emily G’s Jam of Love (raspberry jalapeño) and some chipotle bacon from Pine Street Market (duh).  I even got a little baggie of treats from Taj Ma-Hound Bakery for Dogs for my little Olive!

Check it:

2. Stop 2: Food Blogger Bake Sale at Phipps

Ok, the hours are officially 10-2, but I feel lucky that we got there at the opening because it was already mobbed!

Stop reading this post, and get in the car before all the treats are gone!

Everything looked amazing – it was positively overwhelming to make a choice!  Doughnut muffins?  Cranberry cobbler cookies?  Salted caramel brownies?  OMG.

I ended up with the following:

Peanut krispie pops, orange-yogurt mini loaf, marscapone cream sandwich cookies

Deeelish!

The pops I’m bringing with me to Watershed tonight for Adrienne’s birthday, but the mini-loaf by Z Tasty Life was delicious alongside our bacon and coffee and I’m saving these bad boys for later:

I also got the opportunity to meet some of my favorite bloggers like Running With Tweezers and The Broke Socialite (love you! mean it!) and see our girl Wendy of @ATL_Events! You guys did a GREAT job and I am sure you’ll raise a ton of dough for Share our Strength!  Nice work!

It was a truly awesome Atlanta morning!

Pretty little Anjali came in from DC to visit this weekendand what a gorgeous one she picked!  Anj used to live here + was pretty tied into the restaurant scene, so I wanted to show her a few new places that I thought she might find interesting.

welcome anj!

Over the course of the weekend, we had dinner at Local Three, a quick visit to Bakeshop, catering from Fox Bros. BBQ, yogurt at Yoforia, a lovely meal at Pancho’s – Buford Highway (throwback) + an exceptionally good brunch at Empire State SouthNeedless to say, we were well fed…

just some chicks in hats

Like Anj, the lovely couple who joined us for Sunday brunch at Empire, Scott + Adina, also had not dined at the restaurant before.  Empire, although not one of my Top 10 Atlanta Restaurants, does a lot of things right – particularly for brunch.  The first time I had brunch at ESS, I opted for a schmorgasboard of a la carte items, assuming that I understood brunch better than the chef.  It was a satisfying meal, but honestly, pretty much anyone can cook an egg over medium, toast some bread + season a handful of home fries.  (My usual.)  This time, however, I fully deferred to the chef.

And so did everyone else at our table…for the same exact item!  (Clearly, no creativity here.)

now you see it...

Jalapeno & Bacon Biscuit w/ confit pork, poached eggs, arugula, balsamic onion jam + hollandaise mousseline.  Heavenly fork!  The flavors were all in perfect harmony with each other – nothing was too overpowering.  It was all just right.  The J&B Biscuit is the single best brunch item I’ve ever consumed.  Quote me.

...now you don't!

You guys.  You REALLY have to try it.

ESS for brunch is no joke.  Seriously, drop on by this weekend - and don’t forget to order the Jalapeno & Bacon Biscuit.  You’re welcome.

Yesterday evening, a nice little posse + I took advantage of the Scoutmob deal offered at La Pietra Cucina.  Typically, I am not big on going out for Italian food (with the exception of the occasional Alfredo’s visit, of course).  However, I’d heard some pretty great things about La Pietra + wanted to see for myself – as usual the Scoutmob just sweetened the deal.

I arrived a good 20 minutes before everyone else, so I parked myself at the bar, ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio + checked in on Foursquare.  As soon as I checked in, a tip popped up informing me that no matter what else I ordered at La Pietra, I needed to try the proscuitto.  Done.

When we sat down, I let everyone know that a little birdie told me that the proscuitto was amazing + we promptly threw in an order for it.  It really was incredible.  I’d always assumed that proscuitto was proscuitto – slice the meat + serve it.  This was way better than any proscuitto I’ve had anywhere else in the U.S.  And, I’m not exaggerating at all.  Do not pass over it on the menu because you think you can get it anywhere!  Trust me.

For appetizers we ordered the following to share…

Proscuitto di Parma w/ emilian flatbread, fresh ricotta + pineapple mostarda.

Burrata Mozzarella w/ sea salt + olivastro.

The Tortellini Special.  Note: Do not tune out the specials like I usually do.  (Can’t help it…)  I wasn’t listening when the server told us about this special + I would have really missed out if Mr. Barocas didn’t catch it + throw in an order.  It was just marvelous.

All of us ordered pasta dishes or “primi” for our main entrees.  Everything was SO delicious, although I’m pretty sure that I ordered the best as I tried a few of the other plates…

I got the Strigoli alle Vongole w/ clams, pancetta (this sold me) + pequillo peppers.

Slick + Mr. Barocai ordered Mario’s Black Spaghetti w/ rock shrimp, scallions + hot calabrese sausage.  (Black spaghetti is so cool looking.  This was definitely the prettiest plate + in my opinion, a close runner up to my order.)

Mr. Brad-Cohen-Himself selected Carla’s Tagliatelle w/ wild pacific mushrooms, thyme + parmigiano.  (I h.a.t.e. mushrooms, but it still looked + smelled super.)

Gorms + Cute Cari opted for the Hand Cut Pappardelle w/ bolognese ragu + grana padano.

We finished every last bite + were very pleased with our meal.

Then, dessert arrived.  We all shared three dishes, two of which are pictured below, but I must admit that I cannot completely remember what they were…  (Lifestyle NOT food blog – please remember.  Sorry not sorry.)  Regardless, I’d definitely recommend not skipping dessert.  All three that we shared were exceptionally tasty + the perfect end to a delicious meal.

So, just breezing over these…  :)

For not being the biggest Italian restaurant fan (i.e. eating pasta outside of the house, generally), I thought that La Pietra Cucina was fabulous.  (If you read the blog frequently, you know that I reserve that particular word for only the best of the best.)  No matter how good I think I am at putting jarred pesto on whole wheat pasta, I am absolutely not a trained chef + have NOTHING on the brilliance of Bruce Logue at La Pietra.

I definitely think that this restaurant would be great for a third or fourth date.  However, I do feel obligated to say that while our meal was pretty darn close to perfect, our service was very slow.  Just know before you go, La Pietra does not strike me as a restaurant that can get you in and out quickly.  Regardless, I would love to dine there again + strongly encourage everyone with a Scoutmob to check it out.

Now, to deal with my garlic breath…  (I could seriously kill a vampire.)

Slick + I spent the weekend with close friends in NYC.  And we had sooooo. much. fun!

Although we originally wanted more of a laid-back visit, we managed to jam pack it with awesome randomness, including walking The High Line

And thoroughly admiring it…

Popping by Rockefeller Center for a bit of inspiration…  (Although, I am sorry to report that we did NOT see Liz Lemon.)

Then, stuffing our faces at Lombardi’s

With THAT…

Marveling at the incredible skyline…

Plotting how we could bring this amazingness back to Atlanta from Chelsea Market

And seriously falling in love with these bad boys at Top Shop

Oogling impressive lego displays…

Getting our fill at Momofuku Milk Bar

And again at Dylan’s Candy Bar

AND AGAIN at Jess + Paul’s Annual Turducken Party!

Which was simply AMAZING.  Please see:

Believe it or not, that was all just a taste of the weekend….  It was a very solid trip + super great to see our friends.

slick's empire state of mind

NYC: You were good to us + we shall conquer you again soon.  Until then, stay classy…

Over the weekend, Slick + I went to dinner w/ the Einsteins at Local ThreeHave you been? Shame on you if not – SHAME!  We went for my birthday brunch in January + thought it was really great + a very special restaurant.

However, during brunch the boys struck up a conversation with the bartender, who admitted to them that brunch is good – but dinner is flat-out amazing. He was right!

So, I have this adorable new coworker, Megan.

Megan’s fiancé, Jon, is a finance guy by day and a musician by night

Last night, I was fortunate enough to get an invitation to see one of this bands play at Blind Willies. I’m not going to lie – I think the name alone swayed my decision to attend: Burnt Bacon.  (…well, you know how we feel about Bacon.) I figure, with a name like (Burnt) Bacon, they have to be good.

But they weren’t good…they were INCREDIBLE.

Here’s the Q+DD on BB:
The 4 core players, Jon Liebman, Chris Uhler, Oliver Wood, and Dave Roth, who all play with their own bands, come together monthly to jam with each other and deliver a pretty spectacular sound.  They describe their style as “smoky blues, classic rhythm and blues, soul, Creole, and folk with some jazz, gospel and country thrown in.”

Listen, we got there about a half hour before they started and it was easy to score a seat right up front… but as soon as they played their first note, the place was PACKED. (Sidebar: The crowd was quite diverse – I think every demographic, age range and personality type were represented.  Normally, this is the type of crowd that would compete for my attention, but I am telling you, the band rocked out so hard that I was glued to the stage.)   It’s immediately apparent that all 4 of these guys are 1) tremendously talented and 2) having the time of their lives on the stage. It’s hard not to love a band like that.

I’m BEGGING you to check them out.  Check out their website here, become a fan on Facebook here, and to be a “Burnt Baconeer, sign up for their email list here.

It’s (burnt) BACON!

Baconbaconbaconbaconbaconbaconbaconbaconbacon

Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Anyway, go see the band.  Trust me. They’re not just good they’re BACON good.
