Over my birthday weekend, Kevin took it upon himself to make plans. Shocked, I was, shocked! And, v. pleased.

He arranged for a number of excellent meals over the weekend, but my favorite thing we did was have a little stay-cation at The Social Goat Bed + Breakfast in Grant Park.

Here’s the Q+DD on The Social Goat:

The Social Goat Bed + Breakfast is located in downtown Atlanta, and is in the community surrounding the oldest city park, Grant Park. The park was established in 1882 when Lemuel P. Grant gave the city of Atlanta 100 acres and the city acquired an additional 44 acres to create a park for its citizens, eventually developing Atlanta’s largest historic neighborhood. A failed circus traveling through town in 1889 was purchased and animals were placed in what is now Zoo Atlanta for spectators. In 1892, the circular painting of the Battle of Atlanta was exhibited in the park and is now housed in the Atlanta Cyclorama. Just one block from the park, guest can enjoy all the attractions and much more while the stay at The Social Goat.

the social goat exterior

The Social Goat was originally built in 1900 as a Queen Anne Victorian to accommodate 13 children. Once a working farm and homestead, the house was located on a large piece of property that eventually was sold to make way for suburban building. This property is now 3/4 of an acre and once again has a miniature barnyard. Residents include two nigerian dwarf goats named “Sherman” and “Tallulah”, three cats named “Monkey, Leon, Tanuki”, three black spanish turkeys, 12 chickens, and plenty of goldfish and koi that inhabit the pond. The Social Goat welcomes you with southern hospitality, and invites you to stay and relax on their little city farm.

Prior to our stay at The Social Goat, I hadn’t heard about this bed + breakfast before, so I was super impressed that Kevin had booked our stay at such a unique place! When we arrived, we took a brief tour of the house – which was beautiful.

Here’s a peek:

We moved in our bags, quickly changed + headed to Barcelona Wine Bar in nearby Inman Park for an EXCELLENT dinner.

barcelona wine bar

The next morning, Kristy (The Social Goat owner + innkeeper) made us breakfast in the dining room. She borrowed eggs from the chickens on her farm behind the house. The breakfast was DE-licious. A true feast.

Finally, it was time to meet the animals! This was the biggest highlight for me! We hung out with the most friendly, dog-like, dwarf goats named Sherman + Tallulah.

I. fell. in. LOVE!!

They, however, were slightly less interested in us, and way more interested in my bright purple jacket. Oh well. Still soooooooo unbelievably cute!

Then, we met the roosters who had woken us up in the morning. This one is named Fabio.

Kevin and I did not make friends with the turkeys. They were jerks.

We really could have played with the animals all day…

The Social Goat Bed + Breakfast truly deserves the positive reviews and praise it’s received on Yelp! I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a little getaway within the city. It was such a unique experience – one that I know I will never forget. I just loved!

So tasty, in fact, that I may or may not be heading to Tin Lizzy’s Buckhead right this moment!

As previously mentioned in my Antico post, Mich + Justin were in town from NYC last week. Since they hadn’t met Slick yet, we made plans to join them for dinner one evening. They were staying in Grant Park, and so we thought it made sense to go some place local. The first restaurant to pop into my mind was Six Feet Under.

whoops!! - accidentally brought the remote to dinner in my purse. fact: i am the world's greatest roommate.

Which reminds me, I love Six Feet Under in Grant Park for exactly five reasons:

5 - Oyster Shooters
They have them and I think that’s awesome. My favorite is the Six Feet Under: Absolut Peppar, Bloody Mary mix + Oyster, but the Bloody Bass-tard and the Oyster Kamikaze are really fun, too.

Oyster Shooter

Check out a list of Six Feet’s Oyster Shooters here:
http://www.sixfeetunderatlanta.com/index.php?id=drinks

4 – The Best Hush Puppies in the History of the World.
They are absolutely delish. I like mine a bit underdone. I’d eat hush puppies over french fries or onion rings any day – although I’d prefer not to have to choose.

Six Feet Under's shrimp + scallops in parchment + the remainder of my hush puppies

3 – Proximity to Oakland Cemetery
I love, love, love Oakland Cemetery – it’s easily one of my favorite attractions in Atlanta. There are so many interesting, historic people like Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones + Maynard Jackson buried there. I think it’s so fun to go on a walk through the garden cemetery on a pretty day and admire all the old crypts. A few drinks at Six Feet Under afterwards makes for a really unique date*.

2 – The Staff
I have absolutely nothing profound to say here. The service is good. The staff kind of reminds me of a crew of shipmates. I think that is cool and theme-appropriate for Six Feet. That’s all.

1 – DYSON HAND DRYERS!!
Have y’all tried these yet? Fact: Dyson Hand Dryers are the most powerful hand dryers in the whole wide world. I’m a little obsessed with Dyson vacuum cleaners – so spotting these babies at Six Feet made my day! (It doesn’t take much to excite me, obv.)

Six Feet Under's Dyson hand dryers

I’m just saying…what else could you possibly ask for in a restaurant?

Although the Grant Park location is my favorite, Six Feet is also located in West Midtown near the Atlanta Humane Society. The West Midtown location has a great rooftop patio that I’ve really enjoyed in the summer for drinks.

Oakland Cemetery (http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/) is situated in downtown Atlanta – you can see it from Six Feet Under in Grant Park. It’s a garden cemetery, founded in 1850, and is the final resting place of many of Atlanta’s settlers, builders and most noted citizens, such as Bobby Jones (famous golfer), Margaret Mitchell (wrote Gone with the Wind) and Maynard Jackson (first African American elected mayor in a southern city). I found it interesting to walk through the massive headstones of families with names we see every day around town: Inman, Krog, etc.

As our tour guide walked us around the cemetery grounds, he told stories about some of the historically-notable permanent residents. The story I liked the most is that apparently when Obama was elected, the groundsmen found a number of newspapers placed across Maynard Jackson’s grave. Another one I liked (as pictured below), is that golfers place golf balls on Bobby Jones’ grave for good luck.

I expected to get a brief history lesson at Oakland, but I did not expect to see so much truly amazing architecture. Some of the mausoleums incorporated Tiffany glass! I was very surprised to find this architectural “oasis” overlooking a steel mill, local restaurants and downtown’s skyscrapers. Most of all, I was shocked at the number of people casually strolling, picnicking and going for a morning jog around the cemetery grounds.

Most of Oakland’s tours occur during the day, however, our guide told us that the cemetery offers an evening tour a week prior to Halloween. I think that sounds amazing!

Overall, I did not find Oakland Cemetery to be gloomy or mournful, but instead, a beautiful historical site worthy of an afternoon walk or picnic with out-of-towners or anyone interested in learning a bit about Atlanta’s rich history. It’s free to visit and a totally creative, recessonista outing! (Plus, it’s right next to some of my favorite eats: Agave (amazing margaritas), Six Feet Under (great shrimp and scallops cooked in parchment paper) and Ria’s Bluebird (delicious brunch)!
