I have a pretty huge girl crush on Ke$ha…

I mean, she’s a bit on the trashy side compared to my other girl crushes – but she’s got some serious attitude and I’m digging it.  Ke$has (pronounced KESH-a) is like a really bad girl version of Katy Perry.  She’s like a highly functioning clone of Britney Spears in her psycho era.  (Love you, Brit!  Glad you’re back to normal.)  She’s had a hard life, too, even living in her car at one point.  Admittedly, Ke$ha need a hair brush + she might be a little crazy….she broke into Prince’s house a few years ago to give him a demo.  But, I guess we all have our moments…  Whatever.  Who am I to judge?  To me, Ke$ha kind of epitomizes the starving artist who moved to L.A. to make it big…but she actually did.  And, she’s way young – only 21 years old.  That in itself is pretty impressive.

I dig the dollar sign in her name, and for the purpose of this post I’ve adopted it in mine.  Ke$ha refers to her style as “garbage-chic” – Keith Richards is her inspiration – and I have to say, I kind of dig it.  I’d probably never model my personal fashion after hers, but I appreciate her unique look.  I also like the Clockwork Orange inspired make-up she sports around her right eye.

Her song, “Tik Tok,” is excellent for my elliptical workouts and is always stuck in my head.  According to Billboard, “Tik Tok” is the longest running number one debut single by a female artist since 1977.  Way to go, Ke$ha!  Also, today I saw the music video for “Blah Blah Blah” and it’s as awesome as the song.  A little punk + a little rap + mostly nonsense + lots of attitude.  I like it.

Although I am positive that Britney will never be replaced in my iPod, I’ve really enjoyed adding this bad girl to my playlists.  Listening to her music helps me to “wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy…”

Slick got some good news over the weekend and a celebratory dinner was in order.  If I’d received news worthy of celebrating, I would make a b-line for Bacchanalia faster than you can say “American Kobe Short Ribs.”  However, Slick’s favorite food is BBQ – so we decided that Fat Matt’s Rib Shack would be a perfect spot to grub-it-up in his honor.

perfect-o

First, we went to Tara Cinema to see Crazy Heart.  We both thought the movie was amazing, and we’ve been listening to the incredible soundtrack + Ryan Bingham downloads almost non-stop since we saw it.  It’s sort of like The Wrestler, but about country music and with The Dude.  Awesome.  We really liked the movie’s message, too.  Everyone, please see it soon!

"it's funny how fallin' feels like flyin'...for a little while"

Back to BBQ:  Fat Matt’s is my personal favorite place to get BBQ in Atlanta.  It’s a relatively small restaurant with lots of character.  In fact, Fat Matt’s was mentioned in the movie, Up in the Air, as the main character’s favorite place to get BBQ because it happens to be the director, Jason Reitman’s, favorite BBQ joint.  In return, the restaurant gave Jason a V.I.P. card entitling him to a lifetime of free ribs!  So freaking cool.

Moving on…

Fat Matt's

We get to the restaurant and grab some beers while we wait for another couple to meet us.  And who do we see chowing down on Fat Matt’s famous ribs??  None other than Serpas executive chef, Scott Serpas

Scott Serpas, Serpas True Food

(Who vaguely resembles my favorite Modern Family character, Cameron…  Love him!)

CAMERON!!

Obviously, we were in excellent company.  Our friends arrived shortly thereafter and we ordered.

Fat Menu

Three of us selected the tasty pulled pork sandwiches on white buns – and Slick got the ribs.

Fat Kitchen

My pulled pork was predictably delicious, but I’d never had anything else at Fat Matt’s to compare it to.  Slick let me try one of his ribs – and it was heavenly.  I’m adverse to fat on BBQ, I’d almost rather it be tasteless than bite into fat on meat – the texture weirds me out.  Thankfully, I had no reservations about Fat Matt’s ribs, which were both pretty lean and flavorful.

Fat Ribs

Fat (but not fatty) Ribs

We inhaled our BBQ and washed it down with some Sweetwater beer, all while enjoying the live blues band.  Don’t forget to tip them!

It was a perfect celebratory dinner for Slick!  (He was in hog heaven… Get it?  Get it??)  And today, Slick has another reason to celebrate…HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

So, I missed the Black Eyed Peas in Atlanta. But lucky for me, my friend JC (of Trendsetting Productions) invited me along as his +1 to the Birmingham show and to the after-party he produced at Club 1120 and it…was…AWESOME.
First of all, they put on a GREAT show. They’re each incredible performers, of course, but I also thought it was pretty interesting that the whole show was very futuristic. We didn’t get a great pic, unfortch, but Fergie’s opening costume looked a lot like EZ’s Halloween costume:

Always ahead of the trend...

The show had a heavy focus on technology. For instance, the tour was sponsored by Blackberry and you could BBM Will.I.Am and your message would appear on a screen during his set list. And they had dancing robots. That’s right. Dancing. Robots.
Witness:

see?

more robots

It was a great concert. Each of the Peas had their own solo time. Fergie was, of course, my favorite. I love her.

Check it out, it’s like she was singing right to me:

So pretty.

We had a BLAST. The icing on the cake was the after-party, though. JC produced the event, and as his +1, I got to accompany him not only to the party, but to the VIP section where all 4 Peas were hanging out. (!!!)

Appl breaking it down

It should be noted that I am NOT COOL around celebrities. In fact, when I lived in NYC, I worked at a high-end retailer on Madison Ave and eventually got banned from waiting on the celebrities after several awkward stammering incidences and a near meltdown over Liza Minelli. True story.
Anyway. Luckily, pictures were not permitted in VIP (otherwise you KNOW I would be plastering 283471242 pictures of my cheesy mug with Appl, Tabu, Will.i.Am AND Fergie all over the Q+DD.) JC and I tried to be sneaky and get them in the background. Unsuccessfully.

Who's that in the background? Oh, just my friend Tabu. Whatevs.

All I knew for sure was that I wanted to chat with Fergie. Bad. Luckily, JC was aware of my celebrity “problem” and was careful to spend what he thought was adequate time coaching me on my opening line. We eventually came up with:

“Hi, Fergie. My name is Lauren. My friend set up this party and we both live in Atlanta but I grew up in Birmingham and it’s great to see such a big name come through here. The show was great!”

We practiced several times. I felt prepared. I put my game face on, headed over to Fergie and….

“Hi. Um, HI. I’m Lauren. The show was…um…I’m obsessed with you.” <grin>

At which point, Jonathan saved me and I was eventually able to make a full recovery and act like a normal person with the rest of the BEPs and the crew.
Even though I was a bit of an idiot to Fergie, it was still “A Good, Good Night.” In retrospect, perhaps I should have taken Mer’s advice and limited my conversation with Fergie to strictly discussing Kids, Inc…
…sssssssigh.

In case you haven’t noticed, I have a little bit of a love affair going on with my home state.  Although I grew up in suburban North Dallas, I’m for the rodeo, Wrangler jeans (not worn by anyone I’m dating – but I like them on Texans, generally) and wild bluebonnets.  I think Kinky Friedman is one of the best men on God’s green Earth.  Visiting the Tony Lama store in El Paso brought a tear to my eye.  I’m sure that Austin is the greatest city I’ve ever lived in and I know that it will always have my heart.  I remember the Alamo – REMEMBER THE ALAMO!  (And yes, I know we lost it.)  I own a cactus.  I think burnt orange is sexy and my fitted cowboy hat is one of my most prized possessions.  Like a true Texan, I love the Dallas Cowboys and the Mavericks – when the teams are playing well, that is.  I’ve been known to sing “Deep in the Heart of Texas” in the shower, clapping and all.  I think cowboy boots are an essential part of a wardrobe.  I’ll happily smother salsa on anything I’m eating.  And, I love Texas country music.

Austin

Austin

Rougher than watered-down-Nashville-country-music, Texas country musicians really know how to rock.  In particular, I’m a big Pat Green fan.  He’s about as Texas country as they come: born in San Antonio, raised in Waco, educated at Texas Tech and toured with Willie Nelson.  His songs like “Southbound 35,” which references the drive I used to make between Dallas and Austin for school, “Carry On,” which suggests you should eat + drink your cares away at El Arroyo – one of my favorite Austin Tex-Mex joints and “Texas On My Mind” are a great comfort to me living in the South, where people tend to find my state pride irritating.  (I know they are just jealous.)  :)

Lady Bird Lake - Me + Stevie Ray

Lady Bird Lake = Me + Stevie Ray

Pat Green’s concerts are packed in Texas.  In fact, he may just be the most famous country music artist you’ve never heard of…  Well, as luck would have it, Pat Green is preforming in Atlanta at Variety Playhouse on Thursday, February 25 @ 8:00 p.m.  Tickets are super cheap and it’s going to be a great show!

Pat Green

Pat Green

Need a bit more convincing?  This should help – here’s the Q+DD on Pat Green:

I’m for wildflowers in the window
Mechanics you can trust
I’m for crackers in my chili
And leavin’ grudges in the dust

I’m for drive thru order takers
Who can muster up a smile
I’m for takin’ in that stray dog
That’s been hangin’ round for awhile

I’m for turning off the TV
Gettin’ off the Internet
I’m for learning all the words
To the Gettysburg Address

I’m for dusty pawn shop guitars
And boxers passed their prime
I’m for soakin’ up the wisdom
When an old man speaks his mind.

I’m for laid off factory workers
When the wolf is at the door
You don’t have to guess what I’m against
If you know what I’m for

I’m for Texas Margaritas
Gettin’ outta debt
I’m for havin’ faith in something
That hasn’t happened yet

For the shy kid in the corner
Afraid to ask the girl to dance
For the ex-con outta prison
Who just wants a second chance

For the inner city teacher
With her heart stuck in her throat
Can still see God in every child
And never gives up hope

I’m for dusty pawn shop guitars
And boxers passed their prime
I’m for soakin’ up the wisdom
When and old man speaks his mind

I’m for Detroit factory workers
When the wolf is at the door
You don’t have to guess what I’m against
If you know what I’m for

I’m counting all my blessings
When the wolf is at my door
You don’t have to ask what I’m against
You don’t have to guess what I’m against
You know what I’m for

Pat Green

Goosebumps.  Everytime, goosebumps…  If you are looking for a fun, high energy concert, I encourage y’all to check out Mr. Green on February 25.  Plus, Variety is a killer place to see a live show.  I’ll be there clad in vintage boots, my cowboy hat and tight jeans (J Brand - not Wranglers, but whatev.) attempting to get Slick to two-step with me. “So, take me out to the dancehall/ Tap my foot down to the rhythm/ Tell ‘em to play that old song that we all love…”

Just don’t forget:

I’ve returned to Atlanta after five amazing days in Texas for the Austin City Limits Music Festival - broke, exhausted, dehydrated, sunburned and with some music recommendations for you all!  Enjoy:

ACL 2009

ACL 2009

STATE RADIO
http://www.stateradio.com/
genre: alternative rock
When Can I See Them in Atlanta? - They won’t be in town anytime soon, but you can catch them opening for 311 in Miami, Orlando, Gainesville and New Orleans.

Prior to forming State Radio, singer-songwriter/guitarist Chad Stokes Urmston was a founding member of the phenomenally successful indie-roots band Dispatch. That Vermont-formed trio had a remarkable six-year run, culminating in a 2004 farewell gig in Boston that drew 110,000 fans. Three years later, a reunited Dispatch sold out three nights at Madison Square Garden for a Zimbabwe benefit concert. By then, though, Urmston was already off and running with State Radio, which since 2002 has distinguished itself as one of the most politically outspoken American music acts since Rage Against the Machine — if not Woody Guthrie. The trio (rounded out by bassist Chuck Fay and drummer Mike Najarian) plays an engaging mix of rock, folk, punk and reggae, but the main agenda here is a pronounced emphasis on social and political activism. If ’60s protest singer Phil Ochs were alive today, it’s a good bet he’d be tuned in to State Radio’s frequency. (www.aclfestival.com)

BON IVER
http://www.boniver.org/
genre: folk/ indie rock
When Can I See Him in Atlanta? – sorry, he’s not currently touring…

You may or may not find Bon Iver in the “I” section at your local record store. Wisconsinite Justin Vernon manipulated the French phrase for “good winter” for the one-man-band name. And a fitting name it is. For Emma, Forever Ago is the result of Vernon’s three-month solitary stay in a cabin in a remote part of his home state, where he turned frustration and heartbreak into a haunting set of songs featuring bare-bones instrumentation and his ghostly voice whispering, creaking and moaning through it all. Initially self-released in 2007, the album found a label last year, which has kept its winter going for months and months on end, no doubt helped by some of its songs appearing on Grey’s Anatomy. But the TV support shouldn’t undercut a beautifully cohesive statement made by a guy bummed out in a cabin in the cold. Alone. (www.aclfestival.com)

PHOENIX
http://www.wearephoenix.com/

genre: alternative/ indie rock
When Can I See Them in Atlanta? - sometime next year…

The French band, Phoenix, didn’t exactly arise from ashes, but it did ascend through Air. The synth-pop-rockers — Laurent Brancowitz, Christian Mazzalai, Thomas Mars and Deck d’Arcy — started out as a garage band, released a single on their own Ghettoblaster label, signed to Source Records and began backing labelmates Air, with whom they did a remix on that famed French outfit’s “Kelly Watch the Stars.” Phoenix’s first single, “Heatwave,” preceded the 2000 release of United. Their latest, this May’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, features the songs “1901” and “Lisztomania,” both of which the band performed on Saturday Night Live in April. Phoenix tracks have appeared in a couple of films directed by Sofia Coppola; silky-voiced lead singer Mars is the father of her child. (www.aclfestival.com)

BRETT DENNEN
http://brettdennen.net/
genre: folk
When Can I See Him in Atlanta? – 11/14/09 @ Tabernacle

His freckled face, red hair and high tenor make singer-songwriter Brett Dennen seem far more boyish than 30, which he’ll turn on Oct. 28. But the Oakland, Calif., native is certainly in tune with his inner child. Dennen, who broke out with his 2006 sophomore album, So Much More, is heavily involved with the Mosaic Project, a San Francisco Bay organization dedicated to teaching children to live peacefully in a diverse world. He wrote a music curriculum for the program, which was released in 2003 as the award-winning album Children’s Songs for Peace and a Better World. He’s also teamed up with the clothing label Life is good to help needy kids, and has a page on his Web site called “Love Speaks,” which is dedicated to recognizing deserving non-profits. Dennen’s latest album, Hope for the Hopeless, was released a year ago. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Independent Albums chart, and the lilting single, “Make You Crazy,” made it onto the mag’s Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks. (www.aclfestival.com)

GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY
http://www.ghostlandobservatory.net/
genres: electro/ rock/ funk
When Can I See Them in Atlanta? – 12/11/09 @ Masquerade

Already legends in their hometown of Austin, the duo of Aaron Behrens and Thomas Ross Turner melds guitars, sequencers and programmed beats into a white-hot mix of punk rock, digitized funk and techno. Taking cues from disparate influences ranging from Daft Punk to Jerry Lee Lewis to Queen, Ghostland Observatory delivers with sweat and screams. Studio albums include 2005’s delete.delete.i.eat.meat, 2006’s Paparazzi Lightning and last year’s Robotique Majestique, but Ghostland’s calling card remains its high-energy live shows — a cathartic experience for the duo and their devotional crowds alike. And don’t be fooled by the act’s reputation for incorporating over-the-top light shows into their festival showcases; far from being a smoke and mirrors distraction, all those lasers are merely techno-gravy ladled onto the duo’s already explosive dynamic. Singer/guitarist Behrens may well be one of the most electrifying frontmen in rock working today, and the deceptively reserved-looking Turner is a veritable mad scientist behind his bank of keyboards, cooking up one sky-rattling jam after another. (www.aclfestival.com)

NOTE: Ghostland is one of my FAVORITE bands and was incredible at ACL.  I strongly recommend seeing them in Atlanta!

Y’all, this is a big deal – Bob Schneider, my favorite Austin indie rocker, is coming to Smith’s Olde Bar on Wednesday, October 21

Tickets here:
http://www.ticketalternative.com/Events/7774.aspx
$15 advance/ $18 day of show

Hi, Bob!

Hi, Bob!

I first started listening to Bob when I was living in Austin.  He’s from the area and played in town all the time while I was in college.  Now, he’s playing throughout the southeast and he frequents Smith’s.  In fact, I’ve seen him twice a year at Smith’s over the past five years I’ve lived in Atlanta – which has been awesome and makes me feel right. at. home.

i’ve got so much to put down before that’s all she wrote
i’ve got so much to give before my heart ain’t so broke
i’ve got to find myself before i can ever be alone
ive got a long way to get before i get back home
- Bob Schneider, “A Long Way to Get”

Bob Schneider @ Smiths

Bob Schneider @ Smith's Olde Bar

If you’ve ever driven in my car with me, it’s likely you’ve heard a few of my BS favorites, including: “Big Blue Sea,” “I’m Good Now,” “Blue Skies for Everyone,” “A Long Way to Get,” “Tokyo” and “Gold in the Sunset.”  Bob’s shows in Atlanta are intimate and rockin’ and Smith’s is the perfect venue for him.  It’s such a different (and welcomed) experience from seeing him play in Texas where he is a very popular local celebrity…and everyone remembers when he dated fellow Austinite, the beautimus Sandra Bullock.

and its days like this that burn me
turn me inside out and learn me
not to tell you anything i think i know
well i think i’ll tell you all i know
i don’t want to be alone – i want to be a stone
i wanna sink to the bottom of the ocean
and lie there with you until i’m gone
at the bottom of the big blue sea
just you and me
at the bottom of the big blue sea”
- Bob Schneider, “Big Blue Sea”

Old School Sandra + Bobby

I strongly recommend going to the show.  Tickets are cheap, beer will flow – tunes are guaranteed to be stellar.  I hope to see you there!!

drinking cervezas all night long singing mexican love songs
getting all the words all wrong and not giving a damn
hoping that my luck might change feeling crazy acting strange
never worrying about the danger i was in
well i’ve had a might bad run of luck since you left town
sometimes you hit the brakes but you can’t slow down
i know what i want on my damn tombstone
when they put me in the groun
tell them to write it big and tall or not at all
just put i’m good now

I would like to share some awesomeness with you all.  If you are into indie pop, you HAVE to check out Jason Schwartzman’s Coconut Records.  It’s got a California sound and Schwartzman features some of my favorite actors: Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst and Chloe Sevigny.

Coconut Records’ sophmore album, Davy, is pretty rad.  My favorite is the single, “Any Fun” which features Chloe Sevigny skateboarding in the video.  Check it out:  http://www.thefader.com/2009/07/08/video-coconut-records-any-fun/

Schwartzman has got to be the hippest guy in Hollywood now – friends with Wes Anderson (my second favorite Texan) and Owen Wilson, in some of my favorite movies: Funny People, Darjeeling Limited, Shopgirl and Rushmore, he has a new HBO series: Bored to Death and an up-and-coming record label, Young Baby Records.  All of that, and the dude is 5′6.  Rock on.

In the similar actor-turned-rocker vein, I strongly suggest checking out Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johnansson’s new single, Relator.  It’s got a great sound and the video is really super: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/5737571/15028077
