Something exciting was going down outside my office last night when I was walking out to my car to head home.  CLEARLY, I did not get the memo…

The holidays are here!  For the entire month of December, you can find the perfect gifts and enjoy all the holiday experiences that Midtown has to offer

The kick-off reception was last night (and it looked like fun!), but there’s more!

All Month Long: Midtown’s holiday festivities continue!

Y’all!  I’ve been waiting for this week for months…

Check it:

Rihanna performs tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Chastain Amphitheatre as part of her Loud tour!  Do I care that it’s going to be 98 degrees outside today?  I care not.  I’m going to be an amazingly sweaty mess of white girl dancing it up with colleagues (yes, colleagues; again - I care not) at Rihanna tonight.  I’ve had “Rude Boy” stuck in my head all morning…

“call me rude boy boy can you get it…”

BRING IT, RiRi!  This concert is going to be red hot – literally.  And, it just recently went up in flames in Dallas, also literally, so it should be an exciting evening to say the least.

chastain

But wait, there’s more…  Thursday night, I’m taking colleagues to the High Museum to see the Modern by Design exhibition.  We’re starting with drinks + hors d’oeuvres at Table 1280, then moseying over to the museum to see modern masterpieces from the MoMA + High’s growing collection of contemporary design.

Here’s the Q+DD on Modern by Design:

As part of the High’s ongoing collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art, Modern by Design presents groundbreaking designs of the past, present, and future.  The exhibition features a selection of works chronicling three key moments in MoMA’s design collection and exhibition history—“Machine Art” (1934); “Good Design” (1950-1955); and “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape” (1972).  Nearly 150 objects created by over 120 of the most influential artists + designers of the twentieth century are included.

joe colombo’s tube chair

See for yourself!  The exhibit is running through August 21.

This, however, is the grand finale: On Thursday evening, July 14, I have midnight Phipps Plaza tickets to see, in 3D, the final chapter of the Harry Potter saga: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2(Chills, I have chills!)

I. can’t. even. think. straight. I. am. SO. excited.

It’s going to be a long night, but it will be worth it.  (TWSS.)

I feel like the next day I’m going to need some time for reflection: who am I? what does all this mean?  what do I do now?  and so on + so forth…  I’ve been seriously invested in + excited about the Harry Potter stories for well over ten years!  It’s hard to believe that it all comes to an end this week.

Whelp, let’s get it started, shall we?  We shall.  Happy week to you all!  :)

Slick + I attended a beautiful wedding last night at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History.  Toward the end of the evening, Slick submitted to peer pressure + decided to disregard the “Do Not Touch the Exhibit” signs.  The following are a few of the pictures I was able to snap prior to several large security guards + a v. stressed-out wedding planner s.c.r.e.a.m.i.n.g.* at my boyfriend + his buddies…

(*Note: The Q+DD does not condone this behavior…but still gets a kick out of it.)  :)

Alternate Post Titles:
“Don’t Drink + Dino”
“Prehistoric Party Animals”
“Quickest Way to Getting Kicked Out of a Museum/ Wedding Party”
“Tequila + Pterodactyls”
“Raptor NOT Rapture”
“Jurassic Jackasses”

Please do not play with the dinos.  But if you do, make sure that you wear a tux.  (Let’s at least show a little respect, folks…)

One of my favorite places in Atlanta is nestled back on Clifton Road across from Druid Hills Golf Club.  I just love the Fernbank.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History

I’ve used the Fernbank’s atrium and Star Gallery for events I’ve thrown (think Real Housewives of Atlanta wedding – but corporate) + visited numerous exhibits…

slick + me at one of my fernbank events

…but my favorite excuse to head over to the museum is for their Friday night Martinis + IMAX event!

In my humble opinion, it’s the perfect place to spend a Friday evening with friends or on a date.  Think drinks (not just martinis…they have wine, mixed drinks + beer, too), food, jazz music + an amazing atmosphere, all followed by a 45-ish minute IMAX.  To top it all off, you get to hang out with a 123-foot Argentinosaurus (largest dino ever classified)!  It’s perfection, I’m telling you.

Here’s a peek at what Martinis + IMAX looks like on the earlier end of the evening + later on:

If heading to the Fernbank for drinks, yummy eats + to listen to music doesn’t sound appealing to you, seeing an IMAX is a pretty spectacular experience in and of itself.  They are so super interesting, you get to bring your drinks into the theatre with you + it’s only about 45 minutes long.  Perfect timing if you ask me.

Last Friday, Brittany S. + I went on a little friend date to Martinis + IMAX to see Tornado Alley.  Ever since I saw Twister when I was a kid, I’ve been a little obsessed with tornadoes and really did not want to miss this IMAX.  It was incredibly intense + just plain AWESOME!!  (Definitely worthy of two exclamation points.)

And much to my great surprise, Bill Paxton (from Twister) was the narrator for Tornado Alley!  I was pretty tickled about that…and I’m sure that Brittany S. confirmed her classification of me as a total + complete nerd.  Not going to even try to refute that.

I realize that tornadoes might not be quite as exciting for everyone else as they are for me, in which case here’s a list of other IMAX-esssss (what in the world is the plural of IMAX?!)at a variety of times that you can catch TONIGHT at the Fernbank…after a martini or three!  (Not judging.)

Hope y’all enjoy it as much as I do!  Happy Fernbank Friday!  :)

You know what they say about procrastination, don’t you?  It’s the thief of time.  It’s also a surefire way to royaly infuriate your candy-hearts-lovin’ boy/girlfriend who has been very patiently waiting for you to inform him/her about your upcoming Valentine’s Day plans.

Well, you’re in LUCK, aspiring Cupids, because The Q+DD is here to help…

If you’ve waited this long to make a Monday night dinner reservation – you are probably out of luck.  However, you are still welcome to check out the great prix fixe offerings at Fifth Group Restaurants.  Give ‘em a call – you never know who might be breaking up this weekend + canceling their reservation.  (JUST saying…)  Otherwise, I spent V-Day at Apres Diem (last minute reservation) a few years ago + thought it was great!  Could be fun to grab a quick bite there + catch a movie at Midtown Art Cinema?

Another option is Genki Noodles + Sushi in Buckhead or Sandy Springs for “I Heart Sushi Month.”  Genki will be celebrating “IHSM” for the entire month of February featuring sushi rolls in the shape of a heart for $9.95 + $6 Valentine’s Day inspired cocktails.  I think that is pretty darn adorable!

If Monday doesn’t sound like the ideal day for a celebration, here are some fun V-Day weekend ideas:

Atlanta’s Chocolate Tour
The Atlanta Trolley Tour line is offering Atlanta’s Chocolate Tour just in time for Valentine’s Day.  For $80 per person, you’ll take a three-hour tour of four eating establishments where you will enjoy special chocolate treats.  Tours take place every weekend in February + begin daily at 11:00 a.m.  Information here:  I Love Chocolate!

V-Day in the Garden
Enjoy cocktails, scrumptious desserts, live entertainment + dancing while experiencing Orchid Daze, the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s annual exhibition of thousands of exotic orchids.  Saturday, February 12 from 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. $30 per person ($25 for garden members).  Information here:  I Love Flowers!

V-Day @ the HIGH Museum
In celebration of the “Toulouse-Lautrec & Friends” exhibition, the HIGH Museum is hosting a special French Cabaret themed Valentine’s Day event.  French inspired food + drinks available for purchase.  Saturday, February 12 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. $25 per person, $40 per couple + free for members.  Information here:  I Love French Stuff!

Cupid at the Castle
Couples can have the ceremony of their dreams for a fraction of the cost on Saturday, February 12 at Rhodes Hall, Atlanta’s “Castle on Peachtree.”  Weddings, commitment ceremonies + vow renewals are all available.  Rhodes Hall will provide a romantic setting for these brief, inexpensive ceremonies.  Couples can opt to exchange vows under the magnificent granite arches of the front porch overlooking Peachtree.  The cost per ceremony is $225.  Information here: I Love Ceremonies!

Want to send something to that special someone?  Here are a few ideas you can take advantage of – if you act super fast!

Pinkberry Makes Hearts Swirl
For the first time ever this Valentine’s Day, Pinkberry is introducing Swirly Grams.  Atlantans can celebrate their sweetheart with a beautifully wrapped gift of Pinkberry frozen yogurt hand-delivered free of charge to their loved one’s home or office (in designated delivery areas).  Information here:  I Love Yogurt!

Send a Panty Gram
Send your hunk something much more memorable than a drugstore greeting card – a Panty Gram!  He’ll receive a lacy red thong with a flirty personalized message from “his secret admirer” that directs him to the Panty Gram website.  Once he logs in, he’ll read whatever message you want to leave for him.  Information here:  I Love Underwear!

And, some last minute V-Day gift ideas:

V-Day Personalized Boxers for Him
There’s no question where his heart belongs with Lovin’ It! Personalized Boxer Shorts!  These classic boxer shorts are custom-made for him alone with a bright red heart + personalized with the name of his significant someone across the front.  100% cotton, machine washable + great for lounging or sleepwear.  (Thank you for this one, Lynn @ www.dlreport.com!)  Information here:  I Love Personalization!

Tory Burch + Kate Spade Heart V-Day
Tory Burch + Kate Spade are both offering some super adorable V-Day gifts!  Check them out online or this weekend at Phipps Mall for Tory or Lenox Mall for Kate.

A heart-shaped cactus would be pretty rad…  (RIP Felix – miss you, old friend.)

This last idea is kinda off the wall, but worth a mention.  Wax, Atlanta’s wax-only studio in Inman Park, is offering heart-shaped bikini waxes for $59.  To each his/her own.  I promise I’m not judging…  Information here: I can’t think of anything appropriate, so just click on this hyperlink.

that darwin - such a lady killer

With all of that said written, I must admit that a thoughtful home-cooked meal, a single red rose, a bottle of wine + a cuddle can go quite a long way on V-DaySometimes that’s all you really need…

Happy V-Day weekend, everyone!   :)

Mrs. Wolkove and I have been the closest of friends ever since we were kids at Jewish sleep-away camp in Texas…

… and through middle/ high school + college – all while never living within the same city.  Recently, I was the maid of honor in her incredible wedding in Montreal.

Although she lives across the U.S. (in sunny Calif.), we have remained very close throughout the years + we make trips to see each other fairly frequently.  Over the past weekend, Mrs. Wolkove came to Atlanta for a visit.  As I mentioned yesterday, I really wanted to show her a good time.  She’d been once before, and we hit up most of the Poncey Highlands (The Local, MJQ, El Bar, Clermont Lounge + The Majestic Diner), the old Coca-Cola Museum, the Georgia Aquarium, Piedmont Park, Underground Atlanta + a few Buckhead restaurants + Midtown bars - but that was years ago, and “my” Atlanta has changed quite a bit.  So, I jam-packed our weekend with farmer’s markets, funky Atlanta eats, shopping + some exciting outdoor activities.

Our weekend itinerary is below.  Feel free to snatch some of these ideas + consult our Atlanta Bucket List page if you are planning for out-of-towners!

Mrs. Wolkove Departed…  :(

Success!!  It was such a fun, extended weekend, and Mrs. Wolkove had a b.l.a.s.t!  She was really impressed with what our city has to offer.  So, when your friends are in town for a visit, don’t be afraid to over-plan a bit.  There’s so much to see + do in the “capital of South.”  Take advantage of it!

(Your friends can rest when they go home…)

I covered some SERIOUS Atlanta ground this weekend, including some first visits to a few local landmarks! (Thank goodness for out of town guests!)

Thursday Night: Eddie’s Attic.
I can’t believe it, but this was my first time to Eddie’s!

I brought my partners in crime along for this one...

It was kind of a big deal, too – because Greg’s friend’s band, The Eric Dodd Band, was headlining for the first time! They were GREAT and we all had a blast.  I highly suggest you go on iTunes and give them a listen.  (Start with the single “Run Around”…it’s my favorite.)

The best part?  Mr. Tom Dupree and Mr. Jessie Triplett came down from Nashvegas to play with the band!

SupaTalent: they play in a Nashville band called Throwing Gravity - be sure to check them out as well!

Friday Night Part 1: Dinner and drinks at One Midtown Kitchen with the “One” and only Ms. Lindsay Roberts.  We chatted and dined and sipped Aviations, of course, and decided that there are few things sexier than a grey martini…

Friday Night Part 2: Westside with the CoBros.  Yep – Greg 2.0 (also known as Greg’s younger brother Scott) came in town from Chi and after dinner, I found the 2 of them at Ormsby’s playing Battleship.  It wasn’t long before I discovered that Scott appreciates Rowdy

Love this kid.

After Ormsby’s we crossed the footbridge to JCT’s roofdeck where Scott and I:

1.    Argued over whether or not JCT’s roofdeck was, indeed, a true roofdeck. (Scott: “If I’m looking off a roofdeck, I want to see Chicago, not a Chevy Tahoe!”)
2.    Drank water upside down to get rid of some pretty aggressive hiccups (ok that was just me)
3.   Placed various bets over all kinds of ridiculous things…and forgot to set terms for any of them.

Suffice it to say: I am a HUGE Scott fan. Huge.

Saturday Day Part 1: Fox Bros BBQ. Scott is a hot-sauce connoisseur and a BBQ fan, so clearly this was the only choice for Saturday lunch.  Fox Bros is always amazing, but you guys: as soon as we walked in we learned that “Chelsea Handler’s People” were also planning to dine there that day. (OMG!)  Unfortunately, we did not see them…probably because they were not located at the bottom of the plate of ‘cue in which the CoBros and I found ourselves face first.

Saturday Day Part 2: The World of Coke
Of course, WWCC is the location of Camp Dance 2011, so Greg and I have spent some time there, but this was our first full-on tour.  Listen, I don’t know if it was actually the most adorable thing ever or if I am just completely brainwashed (or both), but if you haven’t done this: you must. Coke 4 Life.

Saturday Night Part 1: American Cancer Society Roktoberfest

Bratwurst.  Beer.  Belly laughs. I was SO proud of Greg the party was SO fun.

The band, Sun Domingo (leaving for their European Tour this week!), was great, the German food and beer were delish and I entertained myself this super-awesome photo-booth thingie they had going on!  Here’s the Q+DD: You were encouraged to write anti-cancer messages on a white board and snap your own photo which was then projected onto the wall.

G and I ended up with this masterpiece:

And this one…

These are pictures of pictures.  (yep, I work in tech and I still don’t have a scanner.) They promised me the full-res version soon, but I couldn’t wait to show you…

It was a great party for a great cause. If you’d like to become a member of the ACS Young Professionals group – email us and I’ll put you in touch, or go to their Facebook Fan page here.

Saturday Night Part 2: Johnny’s Hideaway
We left and cabbed it to Johnny’s, which was a RIOT as always.

On Sunday, I rounded out the weekend with a delicious lunch at No Mas! Cantina (delightful even though Shanon and I forgot to use our ScoutMob), a brisk walk and talk around Chastain with Meredith (a feeble attempt at rectifying the serious eating I did all weekend), and a little DVR catch up…but now I’m ready to face-plant in my bed.

WHEWJust whew.

I’ve certainly been known to make eyebrow-raising decisions from time to time, i.e. (1) attempting to do crunches while holding a goblet of red wine – sorry roommate, (2) trying to change into my gym clothes while driving in traffic – sorry West Peachtree drivers…or should I say you’re welcome?, (3) insisting that a friend with a notoriously inaccurate arm/ balance issues toss me my cell phone across a swimming pool – sorry pretty pink Samsung RAZR and (4) asking a stranger on Ponce for a piggy-back ride to The Majestic after a long night out @ MJQ…  (Kids – PLEASE don’t try that at home.  Only recommended for experienced professionals.)

pretty sure THAT was THIS night

However, one of the greatest decisions I ever made was to study abroad in Spain during the second semester of my junior year at the University of Texas.  Hands down, it was the most amazing experience of my life (so far), and such an incredible personal growth period.

For six months, I lived with what just has to have been the coolest host parents who have ever hosted a foreign college student, Maria Jose + Justo, who I’d frequently run into at a local pub at 4:00 a.m. on a random week night, and who were totally + completely laid back (“No pasa, nada, Lindssssssay!”) after I severely cracked (destroyed?) their vanity when I fell onto it from standing on their tub as I was trying to get a good look at my evening’s outfit.  Coincidentally, I knew that I was reaching fluency when I had to sit down and have a heart-to-heart with Justo explaining, in his native tongue, that putting my clothes on a clothesline outside in a rainstorm and then letting them dry in the sun wasn’t an acceptable substitute for a wash + dry.  Viva Espana!

Granada, Spain

I took classes during the week and traveled every weekend with girlfriends I made in my program.  Our classes were all conducted in Spanish, my favorite of which was my Spanish Art History + Architecture class.  I had not taken an Art History or an Architecture class in English before, so many of the descriptive + technical Spanish terms I learned and had to use in essays, I cannot personally translate.  We studied in great detail the works of Diego Velazquez, Francisco Goya, Joan Miro (my favorite), Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaudi and Salvador Dali, among others.

Dali

Dali particularly captured my attention, as I found his surrealist approach to art to be incredibly bizarre + fascinating.  He was highly imaginative + eccentric, and had an affinity for partaking in unusual + grandiose behavior – all of which I can appreciate…

Meditative Rose - Salvador Dali

Which brings me to…the Dali exhibit at the HIGH!  The HIGH Museum of Art in Atlanta is the sole venue for the first exhibition to focus on Dali’s art after 1940.

did I grab your attention?!

The exhibition, comprising more than 100 works, including 40 paintings and a related group of drawings, prints and other Dali ephemera, will explore the artist’s enduring fascination with science, optical effects and illusionism, and his surprising connections to artists during the 1960s and 1970s such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Willem de Kooning.

The exhibition is now showing through January 9, 2011.  Do. NOT. miss. it!

Memory - Salvador Dali

Buy tickets HERE: http://www.high.org/main.taf?p=1,2,1,2  And, I will see you THERE.  :)

Last night, I threw an event at the HIGH Museum of Art + Table 1280.  It’s an annual event that is always relatively well attended, but this year we used every single ticket NOT because there is an exciting exhibit at the HIGH right now – there’s not (cars are gone + Dali arrives mid-August) – but rather because the chef at Table 1280, Tracey Bloom, recently represented Atlanta on Top Chef  Season 7.

T. Bloom

Out of the four years I’ve thrown this event, I’ve never seen Table 1280 as packed as it was last night.  Way to go, Tracey!  We had cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the bar area, which I think is just perfect for a smaller event, and then headed back to my personal favorite room at Table 1280 (the one to the left of the entrance) for a seated dinner.

table 1280

Simply, dinner was delicious.  We had a large group of people, and the folks at my end of the table ordered some pretty yummy starters to share, of which this one was my favorite:

Serrano Ham, Manchego, Piquillo Pepper, Arugula, Breadstick  (loved!)

I also had a bite of a brisket slider and someone’s organic salad – and both were great, too.  For dinner, most of the table ordered one of three items: the wild salmon (which came very highly recommended from our fabulous server, Lynn), the pork chop and the ribeye.   Everyone raved about all three!  I knew that my salmon was very tasty, but I was floored that there was such a strong positive consensus about the food from this very opinionated group of mine.  To finish off the dinner, I had the lemon panna cotta with Georgia blueberries.  It. was. heavenly.

What was the best part of the evening you ask?  Well, let me think…meeting Tracey Bloom was kind of awesome!

!!!!!

We found her to be very personable, and we got a kick out of her Top Chef stories.  It was particularly interesting to hear about the filming of the show, as well as some tidbits regarding producer-created drama among the contestants.  Although Tracey will not reign as season 7′s “top chef,” she is doing some pretty stellar things at Table 1280.  No longer will I consider this restaurant merely a pre-HIGH Museum destination.

P.S. If you throw an event at Table 1280, make sure that you order the miniature quesadilla with chorizo and manchego + the truffle chix salad on a crostini as hors d’oeuvres.  They are really, REALLY addictive!
