Holidays

You are currently browsing the archive for the Holidays category.

If you are a frequent Q+DD reader, you’ll know that I love holidays – and pretty much any reason to celebrate.  I even like not-so-sexy holidays.  For instance, Passover got morphed last year into Lindsay + Lauren’s B.P.E. (Best Passover Ever).  It was 80’s-themed and all…

The B.P.E.

B.P.E.

Valentine’s Day (candy + roses) definitely falls into my top five favorite holidays list, alongside St. Patty’s Day (green beer + socially-acceptable pinching), Halloween (costumes + candy…again), Thanksgiving (turduckens + football) and New Year’s Eve (champagne + overpriced parties).

Happy V-Day!

Happy V-Day!

Sadly, I do encounter quite a few people who are not that “into” V-Day.  Some people just don’t have the spirit.  I hear them say, “why should I be forced to tell my (insert: girlfriend/ fiance/ partner/ wife) that I love them more on this day than any other - yadda yadda yadda?”  To which I simply respond, “because Hallmark tells you to!  Hello!”  Call me brainwashed – whatever – but I’m totally buying what Hallmark is selling.  I love everything about this holiday!  Chalky conversation hearts, under-clothed babies with bows + arrows, oversized V-day cards, pristine red+ pink roses…I love it all.

Which brings me to my point: no matter if you’re a V-day lover or hater, here are a few ideas for the weekend if you have not already made plans:

A Love Supreme:  Nothing says, “I love you,” like sushi, well, that’s our philosophy at least.  Head to Genki Noodles and Sushiin Buckhead or The Prado for a low-key, romantic Valentine’s Day dinner featuring a special “Cupid Roll” and “Love You Long Time” flirty cocktail.  Detailed info below. (http://www.genkiatl.com/)

Valentine’s Day is for Suckas:  Boycott this Hallmark holiday and reclaim romance for the real world at P’cheen International Bistro & Pub!  Saturday, February 13 infuse a little humor into your night…sip on “Cupid Got Shot(s)” while you bust out your best Molly Ringwald moves during the teary eyed dance party courtesy of DJ Feri.  Since the kitchen is open until 1:00 a.m., you might even find a date that you can spoon-feed the “Broken Heart” dinner specials to. (http://www.pcheen.com/)

Tainted Love:  Give love a chance during Gold Room’s retro throwback “Tainted Love” party on Saturday, February 13th.  Enjoy a night of dancing as DJ Andre Perry spins favorites from the 70s, 80s and 90s.  Try the “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue” and “Chocolate Covered Raspberries” specialty cocktails.  Single guys and gals can try to get lucky in love by picking up a red wrist band at the front door as their official “single signal” for the night.  (http://www.goldroomatl.com/)

Shop To Your Heart’s Content:  If you’re still searching for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift, Limon Verde offers beautiful hand-made unique and affordable gifts for that special someone.  To sweeten the deal, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Red Cross.  And, the Shops Around Lenox have a bundle of sweet deals through Valentine’s Day. (http://www.limonverde.com/)

Valentine’s Day Supper Club:  Sun In My Bellyis hosting special Valentine’s Day dinners Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m.  Both evenings will have one seating featuring a four-course meal created by executive chef Allison Lueker, complimentary specialty cocktails and live music by Nicole Chillemi.  In addition, each party will receive a signature floral bouquet from Foxgloves + Ivy Floral Design Studio to take home. $50.00 per person. It’s like I had my Bat Mitzvah all over again…  After almost 28 years of patiently waiting, I finally got to go to Disney World over NYE!  It was everything I’d imagined in my wildest dreams - and now I am pretty sure that I am officially a grown-up.  Although I acted like the biggest child at the world-famous theme park throughout parts of the weekend…”Lindsay, it’s time to go.  No time to see the parade.”  “I’VE WAITED ALMOST 28 YEARS FOR THIS!!”  (We stayed. :) ) …now that I have Disney out of my system, I’m ready to finally begin adulthood.  I think…

Magic Kingdom was pretty incredibly overwhelming.  The bright colors, the catchy music “it’s a small world after all,” the fried foods that we are convinced are aromatically piped through to roller coaster waiting lines, the predictably overpriced souvenirs – I got my ears, don’t worry, THE CASTLE!, the elaborate performances…and and and…

In a 1/2 day, we power-visited Magic Kingdom and were off to drink around the world at Epcot.  Which. Was. Amazingggggg!

Epcot

I’d heard from people that went as kids to visit Epcot that it was pretty boring.  Well, it just wasn’t.  We drank around the world – Mexico, China, Germany, Japan, Italy, Morocco and the U.K.  Got lost in Canada and were asked to leave France.  We wore sombreros and ate lamb kabobs and sushi.  Fireworks and a boat ride back to the Boardwalk completed our adventure.  Life just doesn’t get much better.

I’m still recovering – and I am a little bit in denial that it’s over.  Disney World is truly “the happiest place on earth!”  And, one of the most fun vacations I’ve had in a while.  It was the perfect way to bid farewell to 2009

Note:  I am terrible at resizing pictures for the Q+DD – so we all look a little bizarre in these photos.  Fear not – we have full sets of teeth and we don’t have crazy eyes in person.  Promise.

Hello! I am back from the Bahamas!

It was amazing. Truly.

But I’m not sad to be back in the A.  Yes, it’s colder and yes, little umbrella drinks are no longer available to me by the boatload but all good things must come to an end and frankly, it was just about all the vacation this Type A(+) person can handle.

As far as vacations go, I am usually pretty happy with checking out for a few days, digging my toes into some white sand and diving into a girly novel and a few cocktails.  In other words, I am pretty easy to please. But this vay-cay was ah-maaaaaazing.  If you are looking for a FABULOUS little getaway, I would totally recommend the Riu Palace in Nassau.

Riu pool. Ssssssssigh.

Riu pool. Ssssssssigh.

The Q+DD is this: It’s an all-inclusive joint right next to the Atlantis on Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas.   It’s just a hop skip and a 2 hour plane ride from Atlanta (direct, thankyouverymuch).

Given that these places tend to value quantity over quality, the food was pretty darn good, actually.   In addition to the daily buffets there were also 4 “fine dining” restaurant options available that were fantastic.

We were also extremely impressed with our spa services, the pool and beach facilities, the customer service in general, and definitely the gorgeous rooms – newly renovated to include THE MOST incredibly comfortable beds I have ever experienced.  If I thought could have gotten it in my carryon and through customs, I would have tried.  Those Westin beds have nothing on these…trust.

Maybe the best part was the location, though. You’re just mere feet from the Atlantis – casino, bars, shopping, waterslides, fish tanks…it’s true what they say, it’s like an amusement park for adults! (and with $17 drinks over there, I was super glad to have an cocktail in a to-go from the Riu!)

Atlantis!

Atlantis!

Also inside the Atlantis: the world-famous night club Aura. auraThough I largely believe my club-going days are behind me, we did find ourselves here for New Years Eve and a few other nights and had a blast.

the last shot of D+L before 2010

Long story longer: it was awesome.  It just was.

And if you need someone to take care of ALL the details for you, I suggest you call my travel agent (and friend) Robin Lazarus at Travel Planners, Inc. She’s based in Birmingham but took care of this whole trip for me (out of Atlanta, duh) and Dana (out of DC) no problem.  She’s the best.

Happy 2010! From a tanner, more relaxed L.  Now to get started on those resolutions…

PS.  Oh!  I forgot to mention that in the hallway of the Atlantis, on my way back to my hotel New Years Eve, THIS happened:CIMG1144This wall of sequin-clad women came walking towards us and one of them points at me and screams, “there she is!” Then a picture took place.  Well, several.  This is how I know 2010 is going to be spectacular.

I also learned that that when life presents you with a gold sequin minidress…the answer is ALWAYS yes.

Scrabble is so 2000-and-late.  Jenga’s popularity fizzled in the 90’s – and Uno, well, I guess Uno has always kind of been amazing…I will just leave that one alone.  But combined, SCRAJUNO, the trifecta of Scrabble-Jenga-Uno, is a force to be reckoned with.

It’s like the peanut butter + banana + honey sandwich of old school gaming.  It’s no joke, either – certainly not for the faint-hearted.  And, it successfully kept little brother, Michael, and me (we are very proud inventors) entertained for a few hours – until Balderdash time – during our snowy white X-mas Day in Dallas.

"the weather outside is frightful..."

"the weather outside is frightful..."

SCRAJUNO

How to Play

Set up all three games within close proximity of each other.  The oldest, and therefore the wisest, player goes first.  Start with Scrabble.  After your turn, calculate how many points your word(s) generated.

-  If your word is between 0 – 10 points or is 3 letters long or fewer:  Remove 3 Jenga blocks from the tower and draw 3 Uno cards.  Play the Uno hand until a player wins or you’ve gone through the entire deck of cards once.

-  If your word is between 10 – 15 points or between 4 – 5 letters long:  Remove 2 Jenga blocks from the tower and draw 2 Uno cards.  Play the Uno hand until a player wins or you’ve gone through the entire deck of cards once.

-  If your word is 15 points or higher or 6 letters long or over:  Remove 1 Jenga block from the tower and draw 1 Uno card.  Play the Uno hand until a player wins or you’ve gone through the entire deck of cards once.

SCRAJUNO - in all it's glory

SCRAJUNO in all its glory

The game is more about speed than anything else – so create your Scrabble word(s), select your Jenga piece(s) and play your Uno hand(s) as quickly as you can.  Whomever wins two out of the three games making up SCRAJUNO is the overall winner.  The loser has to clean up and put away the games and is subject to cruel and unusual ridicule for the next 24 hours.

haha

Pretty much, this is the best game ever created.  You’re welcome.

Last night I partied the night away with all the “Young Jewish Professionals” of Atlanta at the Bagel Bashand saw them all again this morning at the Waffle House (who knew?)

As I sit on my couch and try to motivate to make the drive to the ‘ham, I just couldn’t help myself…I had to re-post the elf video. Have yourself a merry little Christmas and please do enjoy:

And this Christmas, just remember this sage advice from Buddy, our other favorite Elf: try and stick to the four main food groups (candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup), don’t eat the yellow snow, and the best way to spread Christmas cheer is by singing loud for all to hear!

Good news! I saw a dog today.

Santa's coming! I know him! (I know him.)

I hope everyone has a very Merry Chrismukkah!

merry_chrismukkah_hat-p148533141110188420uh2y_400

Chrismukkah is a pop-culture neologism referring to the merging of the holidays of Christmas and Hanukkah as celebrated in interfaith households where one parent may be of Christian heritage and another parent of Jewish heritage.  Or, from two Jewish parents, where one may not be religious at all (having a desire to put up a Christmas tree) while the other is very religious causing Christmas and Hanukkah to cancel each other out into one blur of a gift giving holiday.  The word itself is a portmanteau arisen through the blending of the words “Christmas” and “Hanukkah”.  Chrismukkah is also celebrated as an ironic, alternative holiday, much like the Seinfeld-derived “Festivus.”  (www.wikipedia.com)

I’m headed to Texas for the week(+end) and will be on a brief blog hiatus while in The Great State.  I hope everyone has a nice holiday!  Catch you on the flip side…
