I’m pretty much always down for Mexican food. I love it. I feel like I can a little bit of a snob about it because I spent 4 years in Austin (yes, 6 years ago, but whatever. You can take the girl out of Texas…) So when my colleague suggested we go out for a few tacos and cervezas to celebrate one of our other colleague’s recent successes, she didn’t get any complaints out of this chica.
It’s always a little dicey choosing restaurants because one of us is a vegetarian and although she isn’t picky, we want to be sure we go somewhere we know she can find something to eat. Luckily, she also has amazing taste so when she recommended Across the Street in the Old Fourth Ward, even though none of us had been or even heard of it, we were all on board.
We were NOT disappointed. We were greeted by a very quirky and charming wait staff and warm, freshly made tortilla chips and house salsa. We opted for the guac instead of the roasted corn queso, but the table next to us got it and it looked amazing. (Queso is the best/worst thing that ever happened to me.)
It’s a teeny tiny little restaurant, but cute and cozy! We were the first customers on the back porch but it filled up quickly.
Our food was fantastic. The menu was really creative and different. I was suprised to see how many delicious-looking vegetarian options there were (lots of fish items, plenty of vegan choices, goat cheese or sweet potato enchiladas…I even had a tofu taco!). Having a LOT of experience eating with vegetarianos over the years, I know that usually in Mexican restaurants they must become bean- or cheese-itarians for the meal, so this was really refreshing. But don’t you worry, there were pleeeenty of dishes for you carnivores out there, too.

…and we may or may not have gone across the street to the amazing Highland Bakery for a mini cupcake afterward….
